I haven't been watching this 'bake off' programme... I'm missing a treat, aren't I? Shock

He could have served up the sponge with the meringue, maybe with the least liquid ice cream on the side so they could taste it.

Report
Pipbin · 31/08/2014 23:34

He could have put the meringue on the sponge and the ice cream in a bowl and back in the freezer until the last minute.

However this is all easy to say and I think we have all be guilting do poor judgement and rash behaviour in the heat of the moment.

This is so typical of the prevalent attitude to failure today; it couldn't possibly be his fault therefore somebody else must be to blame.
I watched the episode again, and that ice cream was never going to set in the time available; the whole pudding went wrong and he stormed off rather than trying to rescue it; that was why he failed.
I smashed a plate trying to release some praline during cookery finals; I swept the mess into the bin and carried on; admittedly not under the eyes of the tv cameras but in front of the examiners, and the exam was important to me at the time.
The treatment of Diana has been shameful.

Goblin I agree, I said earlier Iain was acting the diva.

I am surprised at the support he has received and if he were my son I'd tell him to grow up.

On extra slice they showed a montage of ians grunts and groans all the way through that challenge. None of which got into the final cut of the episode.

So not only was he ready to explode and was on the verge of flipping the whole way brought, it also showed how bad the editing was.

I read a blog that someone wrote as they watched the programme. The phrases "Iain is about to pop" "Iain looks like he's about to explode" came frequently from the beginning. They had no idea that anything untoward was going to happen later. So even in the main programme it was obviously pick-up able from what was shown.

I agree Iain behaved like a spoilt child. Even on An Extra Slice he said he'd do the same again.

And poor Diana. Some people are really despicable, calling her all kinds of names when they weren't even there and didn't see what happened. It says more about them than Diana.

He might like to take a few lessons from the unflappable Norman! (Although not flavouring advice..)

My theory is that Diana hs to leave for health reasons and so the BBC decided that rather than just make an announcement they would turn the whole thing into a drama and went back and edited the episode to look like Diana was some sort of pantomime villain.
For example she had far more airtime than anyme else and also far more than she ever had before. Also there was the it where she saw Mel eat some of Chetnas ice bream and said " I saw that" !!! She winked as well if you watch carefully but it could have been taken as her being a bit mean to Mel.
I think the BBC edited the episode to create the maximum drama out of a lady just being too unwell to continue in a cookery competition.
In the thread about GBBo before it started where someone was asking why people liked it most posters said it was due to the lack of drama and back biting so I think the BBC may have shot themselves in the foot a bit.

No, that's the kind of thing you say to a friend, nothing mean at all. I would have said the same.

I think the wink was pretty clear though, hoppinggreen, if not physically then definitely in her tone and manner.

Surely Iain will be back tonight, to replace Diana?

I was really shocked that she didn't get penalised aswell.

Mean to Mel? It was lighthearted surely?

Report
Oblomov · 02/09/2014 08:48

But, they were right. He shouldn't have tipped it in the bin. He could have still done the meringue bit, on a sponge and presented 'something' .

It was all filmed months ago wasn't it? So all of the backlash Diana is getting and people arguing for Iain to be reinstated are pointless, the whole series has been filmed already.

Report
AWombWithoutARoof · 02/09/2014 14:05

Exactly. So I'm wondering whether all the hoohah will actually turn out to be a non-event because he may well have been asked back as soon as Diana had to drop out.

Report
LizzieMint · 02/09/2014 14:18

They've had someone drop out before in another series (can't remember who or why but I know it happened!) without replacing them, I'd be surprised if they let Iain back this week. They just didn't lose anyone the following week, but didn't tell the contestents that until the end.

I don't think anyone has had to drop out in previous series. John Thwaite cut his finger badly one week and couldn't finish his bake, but they just didn't eliminate anyone that week, and chucked out two at some subsequent point. If that's what you're thinking of...?

Report
ShadowStar · 02/09/2014 14:53

They had a drop out at an early stage in The Apprentice one year, IIRC he wasn't replaced. Is it maybe that you're thinking of?

Report
WipsGlitter · 02/09/2014 14:55

Ian did hint on Newsnight that he might be back, Kirsty asked him and he said 'you'll have to watch next week and see!'
