English breakfast

The bacon sandwich thread started me thinking.

One poster mentioned the full English breakfast. What do you think this comprises? I do not think it includes baked beans or hash browns because they are an American introduction. For me a full English is fried egg, crisp bacon, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms and possibly some fried slices of leftover boiled potato or what we call scrubble and beak (use your brain for that one).

As a vegetarian I wouldn't eat one, but if I saw it on a hotel menu then I'd expect it to be fried bread, mushrooms, a grilled tomato, bacon, sausages and eggs with fruit juice and tea/coffee and toast.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 26/08/2014 20:16

A rare treat is a FEB at supper time. Strangely them called a mixed grill. But oh yum.

Of you sully my mushrooms with bean juice, there aren't enough WoeBetides in the world though. I'll be checking.

Mrsjayy · 26/08/2014 20:18

I have not had breakfast dinner for ages usually its a winter dinner here

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 26/08/2014 20:21

Is it breakfast time yet?

Glass of juice
Cup of tea

Fried egg
Smoked back bacon
Chipolatas (full sausages are too filling for me)
Black pudding
Mushrooms
Slice of white toast with butter.

Another slice of toast with marmalade and another cup of tea.

Love a veggie breakfast, but like a Scottish twist with tattie scones.
I think it needs some potato in there somewhere whether that's fried slices like my Mum used to do, hash browns (modern yes, but good) or tattie scones like we had on our Highlands holiday (at the rather wonderful & wildlife friendly Grant Arms hotel in Grantown-on-Spey)

No baked beans for me though - just for DS Smile

And lots of fresh, hot tea Brew

Mrsjayy · 26/08/2014 20:29

Oh fried sliced tatties not had those in years my nana used to make

JugglingFromHereToThere · 26/08/2014 20:34

Looking for a like button Mrsjayy Smile

StairsInTheNight · 26/08/2014 20:36

Please explain about cooking the tomatoes properly?

I prefer American pancake and bacon with syrup breakfast myself.

StairsInTheNight · 26/08/2014 20:36

American breakfast potatoes... Mmm

17leftfeet · 26/08/2014 20:38

Locally it's not a full English unless there is a slice of spam on the plate

Personally I like...

Fried eggs
Bacon
Pork sausages
Beans
Mushrooms
Fried potatoes (or chips depending on which cafe)
White bread to mop up

Several mugs of builders tea

Redbeck cafe just outside Wakefield does the best full English ever!

Mrsjayy · 26/08/2014 20:40

Make them* they dont taste right when I make them tbh I think nan probably fried them in lard

UncleT · 26/08/2014 20:46

Ideal is this -

Smoked, thick, good-quality back bacon, fried until crisp. Fried Lincolnshire sausages, straight from an actual independent butcher in a particular village there, fried mushrooms, fried good-quality black pudding, beans (heinz), fried organic eggs easy-over but still runny-yolked, fried left-over potatoes.

No, I never actually get to have this. Confused

squoosh · 26/08/2014 20:49

Oh yes, American home fries for breakfast are amazing.

Whitewhine · 26/08/2014 20:56

It's got to be the full Scottish breakfast here...

Stornoway black pudding
Sliced sausage
Pork sausage
Tattie scone
Grilled tomato
Grilled bacon
Fried egg
Buttered toast
Builders tea
HP sauce

Delicious!!

HappyAgainOneDay · 26/08/2014 21:03

A grixed mill usually has grilled lamb chops as well as the yummy crisp black pudding and other things.

Bacon
Sausages
Mushrooms fried in the sausage fat
Black pudding
A spoonful of well simmered tomatoes with the liquid drained off.
Scattering of fried new potatoes.
Runny fried egg fried in goose fat.
Toast with lemon marmalade

Teddybeau1988 · 26/08/2014 21:10

Egg
Sausage
Bacon
Grilled tomato
Toast
Mug of tea

firstchoice · 26/08/2014 21:13

Crispy bacon ( a mix of back and streaky) - piles and piles of it
Sausages (high quality chipolatas from local farm shop)
Eggs any style
Fried Bread

Add, depending on mood:

Grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, black pudding, a baked bean and chopped tomato mix, Tiger Bread / /baguette with lots of real butter.

And a pot of hot Tea. Or Champagne, for Birthdays etc. Grin

hashtagwhatever · 26/08/2014 21:21

Ideal for me.

Crispy bacon
Fried egg
Sausage
Black pudding
Bubble
tinned plum tomato
Fried slice

Osospecial · 26/08/2014 22:19

My perfect breakfast would be
Bacon
Scrambled egg
Sausage (but the thin ones)
Beans
Toast or muffins
Lots of mushrooms
Fried tomato
Juice
Coffee
Ohh and Hp sauce mmm

The wierdest take on an English breakfast I have had was in Singapore where they gave me lettuce Shock along side the usual bacon, sausage, baked beans etc!

ICanSeeTheSun · 26/08/2014 22:23

I had an amazing breakfast for my evening meal, DH was well shocked and said you can't have breakfast for dinner.

I think he is wrong as no way could I eat a full English in the morning.

Mim78 · 26/08/2014 22:28

I love hash browns even if they are American!

Tomatoes with it are the devil's work though - tinned tomatoes most disgusting!

Mim78 · 26/08/2014 22:29

At risk of sounding pretentious, orange pecoe (sic?) tea is lovely with it.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 26/08/2014 22:30

Am finding the addition of lettuce quite amusing Oso Grin

Osospecial · 26/08/2014 22:35

I know juggling, it was years ago now but it still makes me laugh to think about it Grin
