I get that it's all for a good cause etc. and I'm hiding peoples' videos left, right and centre on FB. But I want no part in it thanks. Mentioned to DH earlier how they're all getting right on my tits now, and how no-one I knew would nominate me because they're all far too sensible. Hmm And then my sister nominates me. FFS. I just replied that I wouldn't be donating anything to anyone nor throwing anything over my head, thanks. And now she's getting huffy with me. Am just going to ignore, now. Next week it will be some other silly craze.

Just wanted to moan, I like moaning. Grin

All these fads have in fact raised a heck of a lot of money to charities and without these challenges unfortunately most people don't think to donate.

But I think they are great and raise awareness across the country.
If you don't want to take part, fine just donate the £3 or more if you can afford it, don't moan about it though.

Cock in a sock, and the no make-up selfies were brilliant, and I donated to both when normally I wouldn't and it also spured me on to donate monthly to cancer research aswell.

I'm hoping someone will come up with something for bone cancer, as my bro died from it and not many people hear of this particular cancer.

juneybean · 26/08/2014 17:48

Every trained professional in that room laughed. I'm sorry you don't feel it was an appropriate response but it's hardly a huge thing now is it.

Well done Skinner would be proud.

VinoTime · 26/08/2014 18:41

I've been nominated today by a work colleague.

While I think it is really wonderful that so much awareness and money is being raised for ALS and other charities too, I have absolutely no intention of throwing buckets of ice cold water over my head. So I posted exactly that on FB in response and I'll make a donation to WaterAid instead.

shrugs

I really dislike charitable trends like this where the challenge becomes wasteful. Different with the makeup free selfie, etc. But this one is literally throwing thousands of gallons of clean water down the drain without a second thought Hmm Sad

I8toys · 26/08/2014 18:43

I have been nominated today by a friend. I just posted Patrick Stewart's response to it from youtube where he uses the ice to make a drink and writes a cheque - class. I will donate an amount of money to charity but I am not dousing myself with water - end of.

BigBirthdayGloom · 26/08/2014 18:46

OP I've just done the challenge and asked my nominees first. One if them said "no thanks, good luck though". If your response to your sister was just as you wrote it, I might have been hurt too. It was more confrontational than needed.

Darkesteyes · 26/08/2014 18:51

I didnt realise that was what Patrick Stewart did. I tried to watch the vid yesterday but couldnt get it to play. Class indeed. Hes great I follow him on Twitter but im following so many people now its easy to miss things.

BankWadger · 26/08/2014 19:03

ScouseBird8364
Honestly, if I had a good amount of money, I WOULD donate to certain charities, probably Cancer Research and Stroke Association but in my opinion and especially in this day and age, charity begins at home.

Why aren't the likes of Cheryl Cole doing it? People who have money to burn?

Plus, ALS org test on animals

Sorry I know this in reply to a post way back on the first page, but you really should educate yourself about medical research. Medicines are all tested extensively on animals (typically mice) before they are allowed anywhere near a human. This goes for cancer drugs.

If you don't want to don't support a charity or use a medicine that tests on animals, don't get sick. Ever.

vikkiblondie · 26/08/2014 19:03

I wish people would investigate the fiances of these charities before they jump on the band wagon. When they relise the labour costs of running the company are half of the revenue and the CEO is on $340,000 a year maybe people wouldnt jump on the band wagon so quickly but then they would because they do it for their self gratification .

DoJo · 26/08/2014 19:09

Im sick of the whole loook at meeee im doing something for charity zzzzz.
Half the people on my fb havent donated and dont even know what the cause is

It's your Facebook and your friends - why do you maintain relationships with people you feel such contempt for?

OP - why aren't you annoyed at your sister for being a twat about it rather than the charity/movement/promotion of the cause?

Idontseeanysontarans · 26/08/2014 19:25

I got nominated today, will do it after work tomorrow more than likely. I will only nominate the 3 people I know will take it in good spirits and I'm checking with them beforehand just to make sure. If they don't want me to I won't. (The person who nominated me did this - a good idea I think)
Round these parts it's being done with good will and a sense of humour. There's been some good donations given and some innovative ways to highlight the charity.
If bullying or pressure is happening then people need to re examine their relationships I think.

saintlyjimjams · 26/08/2014 20:37

I understand the worry about water if you live in a place with a water shortage, but where I live there hasn't been a hosepipe ban in about 20 years and they don't expect to ever have another one - we get a lot of rain & apparently our water company fixes its leaky pipes.

If it's a concern there are creative ways to get round it, just saw a friend chucking an egg cup over a playmobil person which I thought was clever.

If you don't like the charity, do it for your own chosen one.

And if you don't want to do it just ignore it.

Darkesteyes · 26/08/2014 21:15

We have a water main thats been leaking for 3 and a half years and still isnt fixed properly.

hellokittymania · 26/08/2014 21:16

It's a waste of water and makes no sense!

justmyview · 26/08/2014 21:26

Is it widely known that the guy who started this trend died in August diving into (presumably cold) water? Such a cruel irony.

saintlyjimjams · 26/08/2014 21:37

Yes I heard that. At 2am I would imagine alcohol was involved as well.

Here we are - no water/ice in Palestine

My granddaughter did her bit for it:

thatthingonyournose · 26/08/2014 23:24

It feels to me like an extension of self-promotion culture, ie. celebrity culture. Any excuse to get attention from others en mass and people will take it. Which charity it is and how ethical that charity's practices are don't seem to matter to them.

What becomes relevant is whether the charity's marketing people can come up with something appealing enough to the human ego to make people feel like they are going to be given an attention/audience-reward if they do it, while all the time able to excuse it as "for charity" rather than "blatant self promotion."

saintlyjimjams · 26/08/2014 23:29

This wasn't started by a charity marketing person though was it? It was started by mates of someone with MND.

thatthingonyournose · 26/08/2014 23:32

Then those mates should work in charity marketing.

saintlyjimjams · 26/08/2014 23:34

Eh?

thatthingonyournose · 26/08/2014 23:37

i.e., Their plan was successful, with ideas like that they would do well to work in charity marketing and make it happen for other charities

saintlyjimjams · 26/08/2014 23:40

I think it's fairly hit and miss what goes viral though isn't it - hard to contrive

cleanmachine · 26/08/2014 23:41

What has totally pissed me off I'd idiots saying 'I'm doing the ALS challeng' then donating the money to Macmillan. It's bad enough that Macmillan have hijacked this campaign but people doing it without knowing who they are donating to or why is making me want to scream. It's not the ALS challenge if you are doing it for Macmillan you fools.

thatthingonyournose · 26/08/2014 23:41

yes you're right. But I think if it appeals to people's egos, it's more likely to go viral.

knickernicker · 26/08/2014 23:47

I will or will not do it if nominated. If I choose not to, I will not be making a smug announcement about it.
