I get that it's all for a good cause etc. and I'm hiding peoples' videos left, right and centre on FB. But I want no part in it thanks. Mentioned to DH earlier how they're all getting right on my tits now, and how no-one I knew would nominate me because they're all far too sensible. Hmm And then my sister nominates me. FFS. I just replied that I wouldn't be donating anything to anyone nor throwing anything over my head, thanks. And now she's getting huffy with me. Am just going to ignore, now. Next week it will be some other silly craze.

Just wanted to moan, I like moaning. Grin

No, you've still not said what benefits actually has to do with this.

PlacidApricots · 26/08/2014 09:10

Because I made a donation out of my benefits money and you know someone somewhere will have a massive problem with that (even though after a somewhat successful interview yesterday, I should be starting work next week)

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 26/08/2014 09:11

No one will care whether you do it or not!

It's personal choice and had raised lots of money for a good cause.

You can take part and donate or just donate.

It's lighthearted nonsense and much needed to be honest in all the terrible things currently online.

The things some people angst over amaze me sometimes.

Greyhound · 26/08/2014 09:11

Not a fan but great it's raised so much.

I support two charities, neither of which has involved me pouring water on my head...

UncleT · 26/08/2014 09:12

Perhaps until they do (and again, you mentioned it - nobody else) you could stick to actual arguments.

306235388 · 26/08/2014 09:17

Why are people so annoyed by this? The guy who died wasn't really a direct result of the challenge but obviously was incredibly tragic .

Its raised loads of money for various charities so I just don't get the uproar tbh . People were the same about the no make up selfies. This is the new way of fundraising - at some point people will have to accept that IMO.

saintlyjimjams · 26/08/2014 09:21

Pretty much every disease uses animals in research - animal models are the way most research into diseases is carried out (not talking about drug testing here).

DS2 did it for ALS & he donated £5 from his holiday money. DS2 has had some contact with Chris Woodhead, of all people, post his MND diagnosis so I took the opportunity to explain to him about the condition as well.

If you don't want to do it or donate don't but it's been a huge boost for MND which is a vile illness. I can't see that as a bad thing. And it's causing lots of interest amongst ds2's ate group (early secondary) - they're all doing it which is great IMO.

UncleT · 26/08/2014 09:21

'The' new way of fundraising, 'get used to it' ?? That's an absurd claim.

saintlyjimjams · 26/08/2014 09:26

When I was nominated for the no make up selfie I didn't want to take part in the way suggested so I posted why & took the opportunity to make a donation to the hospice that cared for my friend when she was dying. You can adapt these things to take part in a way that suits you if you don't like some aspect of them.

Or you can just ignore & leave it to those who want to join in. Can't see why anyone would get negative about loads of money being raised for charity though.

SistersOfPercy · 26/08/2014 09:29

I'm fed up with seeing them myself but this made me howl this morning... NSFW with a little language at the end. Apologies for FB link but doesn't seem to be hosted elsewhere.

That video isn't funny on any level.

x2boys · 26/08/2014 09:35

As I said on another thread I can't see the big deal people are raising money for an otherwise underfunded charity that's a good thing if you don't want to do it don't do it but don't try and justify not doing with a sanctimonious attitude and everybody I have seen on my Facebook have said they have donated .

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 26/08/2014 09:36

UncleT - perhaphs you need to relocate your sense of humour?

SistersOfPercy - that was hilarious!! Thank you for sharing Grin

UncleT · 26/08/2014 09:38

Perhaps I just don't think tiny children shouting 'fucking hell' is funny - mainly because it's very sad and disgraceful actually.

Fayrazzled · 26/08/2014 09:39

I'm surprised more people haven't died to be honest. Throwing ice cold water over yourself can cause a heart attack. This article is good at explaining why: www.forbes.com/sites/jvchamary/2014/08/25/ice-bucket-challenge/

I wouldn't do it for this reason- I have high blood pressure- I don't want to take any chances with my heart. But I also prefer to keep my charity giving private. I dislike the furore surrounding big charity telethon events for the same reason. It all starts to become much more about the people raising the money that the charity that is being raised for. I can see the charity doesn't care about that if it raises them much needed extra funds, but it's not for me.

Fayrazzled · 26/08/2014 09:42

That video sums up everything distasteful about this sort of thing. No doubt I'll be accused of being po-faced, but it's one thing as an adult to make the decision to pour ice cold water over yourself and post the video to Facebook, but another to do it to a small child who has no real say in the matter.

ProfYaffle · 26/08/2014 09:43

Have to admit the child/baby ones are making me Hmm. Saw the swearing toddler one this morning and thought it was awful.

Fay the child clearly has much to say, and depressingly, the casual yet assured way she said what she did tells me it's probably not a one-off either. Great. Let's all have a good giggle.

SistersOfPercy · 26/08/2014 09:45

Well, personally I found the video hilarious. I think a small child obviously copying something she's heard an adult say is quite amusing.

I'm guessing your kids were so perfect they never did that uncle? Because I for one had to be scraped off the floor when a young DS said 'Oh shit'.

Latara · 26/08/2014 09:46

MND is a terrible illness and I'm glad that lots of money is being raised for the charities and more people are being made aware of it.

Personally I've chosen not to do the ice bucket challenge, it's just not for me, I prefer to donate money to charity without doing challenges and choose the charity and amount of money I wish to donate by myself.

Some people are doing the ice bucket challenge for their own chosen charities - a colleague has chosen an Alzheimers charity.

But you don't have to do the challenge, just donate an amount you can afford. If someone gets arsey about that it's their issue!

Like I said, doesn't look or sound like an isolated outburst at all, and of course I realise kids copy things. Can't prove it of course, but it sounds like she's heard those words more than a few times. Sorry, I don't think that's OK.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 26/08/2014 09:50

If you listen to the little girl, before the water gets poured onto her, you can hear her say about the challenge. The adult pours the water on her gently and it's clearly not that cold - you can tell from her reaction it's 'fucking hell' not 'ouchhhhhhhhhhhhh'.

Of course a small child saying 'Oh fucking hell' isn't ideal, but it's funny because it's so unexpected, she's just chuntering on in that small child way, not easily understood - then she comes out with that - perfectly clear, I think it's the contrast that makes it so funny.

HaroldLloyd · 26/08/2014 09:50

Did you wet yourself laughing when your DS said oh shit and post it on the internet? Guessing no.

That video is awful!
