These fucking ice bucket challenges...

I get that it's all for a good cause etc. and I'm hiding peoples' videos left, right and centre on FB. But I want no part in it thanks. Mentioned to DH earlier how they're all getting right on my tits now, and how no-one I knew would nominate me because they're all far too sensible. Hmm And then my sister nominates me. FFS. I just replied that I wouldn't be donating anything to anyone nor throwing anything over my head, thanks. And now she's getting huffy with me. Am just going to ignore, now. Next week it will be some other silly craze.

Just wanted to moan, I like moaning. Grin

That'll be the same Pamela Anderson who has breast implants made from silicone then? Which correct me if I'm wrong was tested on animals.

By all means if you don't want to donate or do the challenge, that's everyone's individual choice. But she's a hypocrite.

scousebird Cheryl Cole has done it, loads of celebrities have.

bumasbigasthetv · 25/08/2014 19:16

It is raising awareness of an absolutely horrendous illness though. Everyone i know who has taken part has mentioned why and donated so i think that is a good thing. However, there should never be any pressure. If you don't want to then don't

AllotmentQueen · 25/08/2014 19:20

I'm sooooo bored of the smug "look at me I'm so individual by not joining in comments". Yawn.

Do it, don't do it - don't be so fucking sanctimonious about it though.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 25/08/2014 19:21

When I get nominated (inevitable as several of my best friends have been nominated today) I'll mention ALS for the raising awareness aspect, but won't donate. The animal testing sounds horrendous. And I'll probably donate to WaterAid rather than doing the ice bucket.

pinkr · 25/08/2014 19:21

I'm more disturbed by the amount of flabby men with their shirts off...

Tabby1963 · 25/08/2014 19:22

pitchslapped
"Its not actually compulsory and nobody is going to care whether you do it or not"

The OP is pointing out that she is being criticised for not doing the challenge, and others who don't want to do it are also being criticised.

I've been looking at my fb tonight and see a number of people doing the challenge and donating to different charities, not just ALS. Ironically, the charity will get a larger donation if the nominated person does not do the challenge. I will carry on and man a stall for my favourite charity at the weekend, helping to raise far more than a tenner I will not be getting wet unless there is a downpour.

FoxSticks · 25/08/2014 19:22

My DH got nominated and posted a film of him writing a cheque instead of doing it. He has got so much crap from so called friends because he didn't do it, two of his friends got into a full blown argument over it. One basically said my DH was a dreadful person for not humiliating himself for charity Hmm because the whole point is to humiliate yourself. The pressure around it is a bit silly.

picnicbasketcase · 25/08/2014 19:25

I think those people have missed the point then, surely the charities care more about getting money than they do about people looking stupid.

ghostisonthecanvas · 25/08/2014 19:26

I got bloody nominated and now I am having a little bit of a hard time cause I'm an auld spoilsport. Eh, do I care? No. Did donate though. Didn't feel obliged to donate. Today I had about 15 fecking videos in my fb feed, all friends doing the challenge. Thats £45 to charity. Thats a good thing. I also giggled today when one friend expressed surprise that it was cold Smile

Morethanalittlebitconfused · 25/08/2014 19:28

I started a thread the other day about this and it is still running.

I just got a whole load of abuse on Facebook for refusing a nomination. It wasn't banter it was horrible vile abuse saying I'm not understanding of the cause that I'm selfish etc etc

These same people all know I suffer from a neurological condition that gives me crippling neuropathic pain so how fucking dare they.

And yes I'm beyond angry about this stupid challenge now

TheHorseHasBolted · 25/08/2014 19:28

I don't actually object to having cold water poured over me (that part is quite fun as far as I'm concerned) but I do kind of object to being part of a big internet meme that makes me look like a bandwagon jumper. (I never did the "no make-up" one, partly because I quite often don't wear make-up anyway so what's the point?) Having said that, I was nominated and I did it - but mainly because I was nominated by people who did it in the context of an MNDA fundraiser and I had a chance to donate on the spot. If I'd been nominated by someone who didn't seem to realise it was for charity, I probably wouldn't have bothered.

I hadn't realised I would have to nominate people on the spot before I did it so I sort of panicked and nominated people who in all probability won't do it, but who never go on Facebook so no-one will really know whether they did or not. I don't feel under any pressure to chase them up anyway, the ball's in their court.

LEMmingaround · 25/08/2014 19:42

Great. Someone nominated me. Sorry but no!

LiveAndLetDie · 25/08/2014 19:45

Darkesteyes that's one of the main reasons I'm pissed off with the whole thing. I'm on benefits atm, don't have 2 pennies to rub together and I'm trying to find the money to buy both dds new school shoes before they go back next week. As it was my sister who nominated me, she bloody well KNOWS all this! And still gets fucked off with me. Hmm

Morethanalittlebitconfused that's despicable that people are giving you abuse for not doing it ESPECIALLY when they know about your disability. I would be blocking them all.

AllotmentQueen I never said I was so individual because I didn't do it. I said I was pissed at getting shit from people because I refuse to do it, as above I can't even afford a fucking pint of milk until I get paid tomorrow morning never mind donating to some charity!

OP posts:
AllotmentQueen · 25/08/2014 19:50

It was all the posters banging on about "sheep" on FB that pissed me off OP - those horrible sheep raising thousands for charity Hmm.

If you don't want to do it don't do it - I'd unfriend anyone who abused me for not doing it!

MrsWinnibago · 25/08/2014 19:51

I'm not doing it if anyone nominates me. I'm just not the silly type and would hate doing that.

blueberryboybait · 25/08/2014 19:55

I've been nominated but won't be throwing a bucket of ice water on myself. I am a brittle asthmatic and the shock could be enough to send me to ITU for couple of days. Apparently I'm not sporting because I refuse to state why on FB apart from saying health reasons.

grumpasaur · 25/08/2014 19:59

I was nominated and didn't do it! Lots of good reasons to do it and not to do it; at the end of the day, I just didn't want to.

Haven't received any shit for it so far!

Also- what a waste of water!!!!

Star8369 · 25/08/2014 20:03

I have been nominated and won't be doing it

LiveAndLetDie · 25/08/2014 20:04

Ooops sorry AllotmentQueen. FlowersBlush

OP posts:
Titsalinabumsquash · 25/08/2014 20:09

I was nominated, I quietly ignored the nomination and will continue to donate to the charities that I support.

I can't afford to donate to every cause out there, I appreciate ASL. Must be a really, really shit thing to have but I'm not a millionaire. I chose my charities years ago and that's that.

I have no problem with people doing it though, it's miles better than that stupid alcohol related necknominate thing.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 25/08/2014 20:10

Darkesteyes Ive seen on several news feeds the choice is to do the challenge and donate 3 OR dont and donate 10 (in the US its $100) People on JSA and zero hours contracts arent going to have much of a choice are they

Don't be daft - it's Facebook not a new law. They can simply ignore or say 'No' like the adults they are.

I don't understand why people have Facebook accounts then spend their lives getting riled up about stuff on it. Half the posts on MN are Facebook related. Just get rid of your accounts and life will be much less stressful!

Morethanalittlebitconfused :( Have you had a rant yet? I would. Fucking idiots.

UncleT · 25/08/2014 20:12

Truly sick of this crap now. I wish people would just think for themselves and realise you can donate money to charity any time, and without having to be told to dump a bucket of water over your head. No to manipulative, facile peer pressure. Yes to intelligent awareness campaigns and more giving without being a twat and hassling others.

ScouseBird8364 · 25/08/2014 20:17

AllotmentQueen surely then the same can be said for those who ARE actually doing it? Hmm

PistolWhipped · 25/08/2014 20:18

I've just pissed myself after recently giving birth. Does that count?

specialsubject · 25/08/2014 20:19

better the animals than the people.... Should anyone Pamela Stephenson loves get ALS, will she still object? (remember the attitude change re stem cell research when Ronald Reagan developed Alzheimers)

That said, I don't like chain letters, which this is. I donate to charities as I'm sure many people here do. Just my usual reminder to donate directly, not by the sites that take 6% off!
