She is coming across well but I will admit to being a tad disappointed that she was going in. Are we meant to look to her as a role model? What kind of example is she setting? Claim benefits, live in a street where everyone claims benefits and thinks it's the norm, then go on a reality tv programme for 1million quid.

Fairylea · 24/08/2014 08:28

I'm not sure she's meant to be a role model. No more so than any of the other celebs we have who people seem to forget pretty quickly some of the less desirable things they might have done.

I don't think being in the public eye equates to being a role model.

I can't watch anything with a certain plummy voiced actor in knowing what he got a "super injunction" for but apparently he is a national treasure. I know who I think is more reprehensible.

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 24/08/2014 09:17

There is a high proportion of pensioners on the street she lived on and they were all claiming benefits so thats where Benefits street came from. Some unemployed or ill or single parents but mostly pensioners.

I only watched Benefits Street a while ago and she struck me as someone who cares, that even if she never talked to you before you could knock on her door for help. I know the programme was edited to make them all look like they were feckless scroungers laying about smoking and it is so easy for others looking in to say get a job, stop smoking. When getting out of bed some days is like the impossible task it is very hard to stay employed.
I think white Dee is a good representative of many peoples struggle with depression and the bleakness that being on benefits can bring.

Flossyfloof · 24/08/2014 14:28

I am sure she is a pleasant person but she is also a thief. I know, she has paid her debt (community service apparently) - but could they not have found someone who wasn't actually a criminal to be in there?

ArsenicyOldFace · 24/08/2014 14:34

Blimey Floss is it usually full of worthy deserving types? I might actually watch Grin

Flossyfloof · 24/08/2014 14:41

Um...no. Blush
I just get cross when every other person on telly seems to be vacuous, an ex or current druggie, famous via a sex tape or some other reason which I can't compete with.

ArsenicyOldFace · 24/08/2014 14:47

I'm not saying your wrong Floss. In fact I'm on your side Smile

I'm just so depressed by it all, that collection of 'people' you describe is all I expect. Pleasant convicted thief with social skills sounds better than average (sad state of affairs, I know). But what do I know? I gave up on watching that stuff long ago?

Smilesandpiles · 24/08/2014 14:56

So she's had an absive drug addict ex who got them into so much debt she stole from the company she worked for in order to pay (usualy damn nasty) the debts off.

She then suffers a berevement and falls into depression.

Single with 2 kids

Villified by TV and painted out to be a scrounger for the best part of a year.

Tried to her best and whats right for herself and the DWP - is still called a scrounger.

Goes on a polictics show and shows that she's not as stupid that everyone thinks she is.

Gets offered £1 million to go on CBB

Bloody good luck to her. If all that is true, she is well overdue for some luck, she deserves it.

PrivateBenjamin · 24/08/2014 15:23

I haven't watched CBB but I saw a bit of benefits street when she set about her 7 (?) Year old son, slapping him around the head and screaming at him. So no, I'd say she's not that nice.

thornrose · 24/08/2014 15:31

She stands to make a million out of book deals, product endorsements (pound shops were mentioned!) personal appearances and media interviews.

I'm pretty sure no-one is paid a million pounds to go on CBB.

TwinsetBeck · 24/08/2014 16:59

According to the press, Dee stole £13,000 that vulnerable people had given their social workers to look after for them. She was an admin assistant and was only caught in an internal audit. She was sacked, prosecuted and only escaped jail because her children would have ended up in care. She had to do a lot of community service. The excuse about funding her partners crack habit doesn't really make it any better does it? The poor kids had to live in the middle of all that. She seems nice but I don't understand her or her new found fame.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 24/08/2014 17:07

was liking her till she joined in the cruel laughter at Gary when he was nominated by Leslie for the scrap heap.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 24/08/2014 17:16

She won't be getting anywhere near a million for appearing on BB. I'd be surprised if she gets more than £50k

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 17:19

I didn't watch benefit street but she seems nice enough woman I like her very clucky though the need to be needed type but she seems kind and warm

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 17:23

Why is she called white dee I am asuming there was a black dee who lived on her street

TinklyLittleLaugh · 24/08/2014 17:28

Correct Mrs Jayy.

Fullpleatherjacket · 24/08/2014 18:00

I didn't watch Benefits Street but she has shot herself in the foot laughing at Gary's nom in CBB.

TonyThePony · 24/08/2014 18:22

Who's the plum voiced actor with a super injunction?

< misses point of thread entirely >

ifuknow · 24/08/2014 18:24

A nice person doesn't steal cash from vulnerable people. From what I remember of Benefits Street she was on a mission to get a diagnoses of depression when the rules were changed and she was in danger of having to get off her fat lazy arse and find work. She told her daughter that work was for mugs when you were better off on the dole.
She wasn't intelligent enough not to get involved with a drug addict in the first place. I don't see why that excuses her for being a common thief.
The fact that White Dee is now a 'celebrity' sums up why this country is going to the dogs.

tittifilarious · 24/08/2014 19:03

Or you could look at it another way - someone has made some really bad decisions but has an opportunity to turn their life around and has taken it.

ilovechristmas1 · 24/08/2014 19:11

she has a good management that have ,made her into "the voice of the people"

she had to come of benefits after she was spotted doing personal appearances abroad and other money spinners

yes she stole of her employees

and yes how she spoke and acted to her 2dc's on tv was disgusting

as you can gather i dont buy into this isnt she fab blah blah blah

kilmuir · 24/08/2014 19:17

She is not up her own arse like most of them

Fixerupperz · 24/08/2014 19:22

Its only been a week or so, i am willing to put money on it we will see a different side to her, if she speaks to her own children like that imagine the obscenities yet to come.
My personal opinion is that she is manipulitive.
Also, i thought criminals werent allowed on BB?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 24/08/2014 19:27

Maybe she's this years Jim Davidson, manages to win the audience over while being a nefarious cunt
