"If I Ran The Zoo"

It's sooooo long and it's such a tongue twister.

DS is 2.5 and I often get nice selections like Owl Babies or Oh No George.

But I got unlucky tonight and got 4670 pages of Dr. Zeuss' finest.

I like the story well enough, it's just a bloody epic to read :)

And Soren Lorensen can sod off too - yes DD, I can see him, I don't know why he's not really invisible Smile

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 23/08/2014 21:35

Fox in socks.

We have the Dr Seuss collection and one day my 2 year old wanted me to read all of them. I could barely speak by the time we had finished.

Mr Men books are long.

spine · 23/08/2014 21:36

I love snail and the whale and Dr Seuss!

If DD's story is taking too long I turn two pages at once. She doesn't notice (yet) Smile

I'm not impressed with the new Julia Donaldson one about the Scarecrows though. Just doesn't rhyme as nicely as some of the others.

spine · 23/08/2014 21:39

Oh forgot to say I hate feckin Peppa.

Mainly because I know it off by heart. All of them plus I've seen all the related episodes a billion times.

Dd is obsessed.

She can even join in with the stories now and she's practically non verbal

OscarWinningActress · 23/08/2014 21:39

DS2 always wants the 'ISpy' books. They take FOREVER.

MeanwhileHighAboveTheField · 23/08/2014 21:40

"The same one I have every night, please Mum!"

MissOtis
Do not hide books under the soda. One day your child will look under there for a toy...

ElBandito · 23/08/2014 21:42

Damn it * sofa!

I love Dr. Seuss, adored all those books as a kid. And made the error of buying loads of them for dd, who also loves them. They seem not quite as wonderful when you're knackered and just want bedtime to be finished but have thirty more pages of tongue twisters to go. She picks two stories per night but we have a rule that only one of them can be Dr. Seuss.

I do enjoy reading The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham, and I think that Horton Hears a Who might be my all time favorite children's book - such a great message in that one. These three are actual stories, and good ones at that. But the Wocket in My Pocket, Fox in Socks, One Fish Two Fish type ones do lose their appeal after the 9,000th reading (not for dd, though).

TheCowThatLaughs · 23/08/2014 21:46

Sarnia it is the star wars one. Christ, I didn't know there were more than one of the bloody things. Thanks for the warning!

Hoolit · 23/08/2014 21:50

I am sooooo pleased my dc are passed the reading to age!
My ds13 from about 6 liked me to read the guiness book of records, I hated it so difficult to read but he wouldn't be put off.
My dd10 always liked made up stories and will still ask occasionally, she always likedthem to be scary but I am rubbish at making stuff up. It was easier when we could do a bit each but she would talk her bit for ever!!

FrancesHouseman · 23/08/2014 21:51

Yes yes yes to Mr Men, Charlie and fecking Lola and the Snail and the Whale!

Also, one I have hidden that I don't know the name of, about a bear that seems to get involved in a lot of different stories throughout the book. So you think you're reading a regular storybook about a bear, but it's fairly wordy, then you realise that it's actually almost a chapter book and the first story/chapter has ended and then you have to start a new one, yet the first chapter didn't sew things up so you know it's going to be an epic saga. Definitely not for bedtime.

Will have to try and find out the name of it to warn you all off...

HaroldLloyd · 23/08/2014 21:52

I have to read pages out of a dinosaur encyclopaedia.

It's grim.

pictish · 23/08/2014 21:53

Postman Pat, Fireman Sam and Thomas the sodding Tank Engine all belong in the fiery pits of hell for their long and exceedingly boring stories.

Agreed. All pish. They get chucked out of here if they make their way in.

Sootgremlin · 23/08/2014 21:58

Ha, I was going to say the Cat in the Hat comes Back (quite enjoy the original) and now I have ordered If I ran the Zoo off the back of this thread, as I hadn't ever seen it and DS loves Dr Suess. I never read them, or had them read to me as a child so generally quite enjoy them, but all the tiny cats in hat after hat after hat nearly finishes me off.

I hate reading the Thomas ones, they bubble my boiler.

Sootgremlin · 23/08/2014 22:00

I love Charlie and Lola on the television but the books really bug me as it's such hard work correcting all the grammar as you go.

FrancesHouseman · 23/08/2014 22:03

Found it!

The Bravest Ever Bear

Be warned...

CheesyBadger · 23/08/2014 22:04

Dp hates being asked to read squirrel nutkin

For some reason a squash and a squeeze annoys me

Stealthpolarbear · 23/08/2014 22:05

Where's Wally :o
Love snail and the whale and find mr men really hard going, good books to take to a restaurant or on holiday though :o
The books that reapply do depress me are the Disney ones with the buttons. "It was autumn. Andy...ANDY...do do doooo was going to college. Buzz .... Oh no ds it was Dd's turn..."

EvianBaby · 23/08/2014 22:06

I agree with the swirly writing in Lauren Child's books, also Mr Men and TV spin offs... That reminds me... Octonauts ShockHmmConfused

chubbyhez · 23/08/2014 22:08

Yes to Lego, minecraft and Guinness world record books. Not good.

Ds brought home the same book from the school library for months. It was the reader's digest book of facts, ancient (well I'm 30 and I remember the book in our house when I was small) and huge. I ended up buying it of Amazon for 1p just to save his back.

Stealthpolarbear · 23/08/2014 22:10

I used to love reading the Guinness world records
Oh yrs to ninja go or minecraft rubbish

catwithflowers · 23/08/2014 22:14

My son used to love Thomas the Tank. I hated it so much. Fortunately my son is now 18 Grin

earlyriser · 23/08/2014 22:16

The Cow That Laughs- I feel your pain. Lego encyclopedia only makes excellent bedtime story material in that I am nearly asleep by the time I've read one page Smile
