"If I Ran The Zoo"

It's sooooo long and it's such a tongue twister.

DS is 2.5 and I often get nice selections like Owl Babies or Oh No George.

But I got unlucky tonight and got 4670 pages of Dr. Zeuss' finest.

I like the story well enough, it's just a bloody epic to read :)

Mogul?! mog.

PiratePanda · 23/08/2014 21:15

I can't stand Mr Men (way too long and wordy) or Thomas, and I can't bear it when DS wants to read lift the flap books at bedtime.

JuniperTisane · 23/08/2014 21:17

Postman Pat, Fireman Sam and Thomas the sodding Tank Engine all belong in the fiery pits of hell for their long and exceedingly boring stories.

ElBandito · 23/08/2014 21:17

Anything that needs to be read in an American accent and includes words like "ya gotta"

1sneezecakesmum · 23/08/2014 21:18

Thomas the tank engine is a god here so can't complain about him at all!

Dr Seuss is utterly the pits.

miffybun73 · 23/08/2014 21:19

I absolutely love Dr Seuss, especially Green Eggs and Ham :)

SarniaCherie · 23/08/2014 21:20

Oh yes, i feel your pain Cow If DS picks one of his countless Lego encyclopaedias I limit it to 3 pages.
The Star Wars one is particularly thrilling Hmm. I also get reprimanded if I try and miss out the Fact Box. I.e. year of release : 2006, pieces: 3 Varients :2. In the 2008 release it had an additional (insert inane trivia here).

If DD then it's The Musicians of Bremen, because it's her current favourite and I must have read it every night for the past 2 months at least.

Didyouevah · 23/08/2014 21:20

Actually I think I've been too harsh on snail and whale.. I LOVE Julia Donaldson. Gruffalo etc scan so well but snail and whale is a tongue twister. I read it tonight, so I haven't given up Grin

The one I have "lost" is Disney Cars. As pp said it's difficult to read with the correct accent.

Didyouevah · 23/08/2014 21:21

I love dr Zeus. Clearly a weird parent here!

TheMasterNotMargarita · 23/08/2014 21:21

A story from your head please, Mummy.

And can it be the end of the one you told me the other night.. when you wouldn't go back to sleep in the middle of the night and I was stringing a lot of nonsense together in a comatose state?
?

thewildrover · 23/08/2014 21:22

Yes to You Choose! Brilliant book, but gah, not at bedtime!

I don't mind Snail and The Whale - my two most favourite books to read to the dc are both Julia Donaldson - Tabby McTat and The Singing Mermaid, love love love them both.

Lizardc · 23/08/2014 21:22

Another vote for the awfulness of Mr Men and Thomas! Can't stand them. Some Dr Seuss isn't too bad, but some is grim (Wacky Wednesday as it justs take toooo loooong to find everything!!).

We love Julia Donaldson, although the Snail and the Whale is not a highlight...

JennyOnTheBlocks · 23/08/2014 21:23

You've never tried to read the Clarice Bean or other Lauren Child short story books, what's with the weirdy ever-changing font and round in fricking circles and spirals text

Gives me a headache

ThisFenceIsComfy · 23/08/2014 21:24

Oliver Who Was Small Yet Mighty

God I hate it. I've hidden it now.

I hate it as much as I hate Grandpa in my pocket on TV

LaChatte · 23/08/2014 21:24

One of those crappy fecking Disney adaptations. Long, boring and totally misses the essence of the story.

PinkSquash · 23/08/2014 21:25

You fucking choose was DS1s favourite. We somehow ended up with two copies and it was horroble.

Ds2 wanted the Snail and the flaming whale for 3 weeks straight. It drove me barmy and 2year old DS2 could recite the pages by the time I enforced a new bedtime story.

Thomas the Tank Engine is okay in small doses

thewildrover · 23/08/2014 21:25

Yes Jenny - Clarice Bean made it's way home from the school library once, never again!

chubbyhez · 23/08/2014 21:27

Harry Potter bored me to tears, so poorly written.

I enjoy rhyming stories and love Mr Men, I like the curious language. Just started the magicians nephew with ds1 and looking forward to the series. Ds2 is 2 and all the faves are out again.

chubbyhez · 23/08/2014 21:29

Some books are just awful though, usually the ones that have buttons to press. We chucked out a ladybird one about pirates. It was pointless!

Didyouevah · 23/08/2014 21:30

Charlie and Lola is difficult

"I am absolutely not tired".

Gah!

MissOtisRegretsMadam · 23/08/2014 21:30

Ds got a Disney car book that was basically the manuscript to the whole film word for word! It's been kicked under the sofa with various Thomas books.

For dd it was Narnia I used to struggle to follow the plot myself and it's too hard to just make up or miss bits of... I would have loved someone to have read it to us both though whilst we snuggled up.

Also I once made the mistake of reading the BFG voice in a Somerset/welsh sounding accent that I had to keep up the whole book and had to re-read if I slipped out of it accidentally! It was quite taxing after a while.

TurboTheChicken · 23/08/2014 21:31

DD (2.5) wants Collins Pocket Guide to the Butterflies of Great Britain every night. DS has ten pages of the Minecraft Survival Handbook every night.

I'd sell my right tit to read The Snail & The Whale or even a jeffing Mr Men book right now.

chubbyhez · 23/08/2014 21:32

I try to avoid tv tie in books. Ee were at a rastamouse show at the Edinburgh festival and even the shows creator couldn't make the book sound engaging

pictish · 23/08/2014 21:33

Mr Men
Charlie and Lola

VashtaNerada · 23/08/2014 21:34

DD once got a Rastamouse book from the library which required a Jamaican accent (not my forte...)
