DH got a delivery this morning....

My DD2 is a nightmare. She screams and cries if I put her in the pram, she's impossible to pacify in a restaurant or shopping etc...

So DH says this is the solution.

She's been quiet for 15 minutes!!!! Shock

top me up Maryz, I need it.

MassaAttack · 23/08/2014 17:39

I think it's horrible.

I would have used this way too often, more than I intended, had these things existed years ago - basically it would have made me an even lazier parent than I already was (and indeed still am).

ArsenicyOldFace · 23/08/2014 17:42

Have I got this right? No child with SN needs any sort of electronic aid, ever?

Erm no Maryz you've got that very wrong. Not like you at all Hmm

The assertion I am challenging is that tablets specifically are essential for under 5s with SN. You are in exactly the same position as I am to know better.

Do you want me to PM you who I am? Wink

I am hoping this whole post is a wind up but clinging onto the chance it isn't take a look at Disney's film WallE. Synopsis - Kids sit in mechanical chairs (why walk when you can hover around in your own Segway-esque lazy-boy?), consume the latest Buy N Large projects (which are advertised via Telescreen-style billboards throughout the ship) and sit around watching their own TV screens getting fat and stupid (literally, everyone onboard is morbidly obese from lack exercise and drinking the latest Buy N Large meal-shakes and are almost completely illiterate and profoundly ignorant from just watching their TVs all day).

Welcome to 2014! My 18 and 16 year old children's friends are not just a bit fat, some of them are obese, some of them have never read a book. To say that they are spolit witless by their parents is an understatement. I was reared in 60's/70's so unknown territory. They are never far from their phones and when I pass their bedrooms it is not unusual for me to see (via a laptop) one of their pals on a screen at the foot of their bed. Hologram images are imminent.

I am not a luddite but I worry about the impact of all this on my children. My kids communicate with a lot of their friends online more than in reality. They are obsessed with celebrity culture which I view as meaningless. To me its a tragedy. I get that there is a lot of good and I am obviously on MN but it is not my whole life.

Good luck with the pram!

Why would it be a wind up? There's. picture of my child in the pram... How far did I go, buying the pram for a joke just so I could post on here? Grin

Wonder why schools fund them specifically for that cohort, Arsenicy?

Schools funding tablets for cohorts of 15 month olds? I'm agog.
Do you have a link?

HatesLeylandii · 23/08/2014 17:50

YANBU. I had an inordinate amount of screen time as a child i.e. could (and did) watch TV (including videos) whenever I wanted to. I remember doing my homework at school so I could spend my afternoon being glued to the TV. I turned out just fine Smile

Now, replace the words "screen/TV" and "watch" with "books" and "read". People would be unlikely to find the latter a problem - in fact, they'd go so far as to praise it!

FWIW, both applied to me. I could watch TV and read books whenever I wanted. I turned out fine. Sometimes, I even take the time to notice the green of the trees and the world passing by (which, by the way, gets pretty boring after a while, regardless of whether or not you're a TV addict.)

Enjoy the peace and quiet, OP Grin

Beer, you missed the point, I was talking about the pram not the visit to Disney.

pommedeterre · 23/08/2014 17:54

So not having ethically sourced scarves means your children will become obsese and uncultured?

ArsenicyOldFace · 23/08/2014 17:54

I was challenging the "They are certainly NOT essential kit for DC with SEN" - you didn't mention ages. I get annoyed seeing people say children (especially children with SN) should be able to manage without electronics because some parents can't afford them.

Yeah sorry Maryz I've been repeating the same point about 'essential' and 'tablet' and 'preschoolers' and 'SEN' for so long now to idiotic responses from OP I've started abbreviating without realising.

Of course all sorts of tech is great for DC with SN (inc my own). But I still think insisting that toddlers with SN need tablets specifically and that the tablets are ESSENTIAL is irresponsible.

And with that I give up Grin

pommedeterre · 23/08/2014 17:54

Obese

ArsenicyOldFace · 23/08/2014 17:57

Playing the dumbass doesn't suit you, Arsenicy. I meant SEN cohort.

I was talking about the OP'S ludicrous assertion re the allegedly essential tech needs of SEN preschoolers.

I have been all along.

That is what this thread is about - Under 4s and screens. Read it and see.

Oh fgs if it works then what's the problem.

Loving the apple suggestion. Yes let's just keep out kids quiet with food all the time. As of that's any better Hmm

This phase won't last long and once she's a bit bigger she can get out and walk

DancingDinosaur · 23/08/2014 18:04

I was talking about the OP'S ludicrous assertion re the allegedly essential tech needs of SEN preschoolers.

Its certainly a very useful tool for some SEN preschoolers.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 23/08/2014 18:05

once she's a bit bigger she can get out and walk

^. I like that.

PoppySeed2014 · 23/08/2014 18:06

Sorry, I meant happy meal, not apple. My mistake. Won't go short of the Golden Arches in Florida.

ArsenicyOldFace · 23/08/2014 18:08

Its certainly a very useful tool for some SEN preschoolers.

Yep. I wholeheartedly endorsed that view several pages ago. It is 'essential' that I am disputing Smile.

I'm sure there are other parents of toddlers with similar SN doing a great job w/o using a tablet. That is all. Now I really must go Grin

DancingDinosaur · 23/08/2014 18:13

Well, I believe the op is only saying she feels that it is essential for her child anyway Confused And theres no reason to believe it isn't.

coffeeinbed · 23/08/2014 18:18

I did wonder how a thread about a buggy go to hundreds of posts.
