Somebody on my Facebook (sorry!) Is currently moaning about the size of kids uniforms.
Her gripe is that for her 11 year old daughter she has had to buy ladies size 18 blouses and skirts. She is putting this down to shops having an unrealistic idea of the size of modern children or some such nonsense. She has a lot of people agreeing with her, full on hunnage included.
Having never met her daughter, I had no idea if she was right or not but found a pic of her on her profile and she is extremely overweight as are both her parents. It's them that have an unrealistic idea of a healthy sized child isn't it, and not m&s?

They do, you just have to order them in. It's not something they tend to keep in the shop

MagnificentMaleficent · 21/08/2014 20:44

I was a size 16 in year 7 and 5ft8 - had a devil of a job getting school uniform to fit. By then time I left school I was an inch taller and still a size 16.

20 years later and after 3 DC I am an 18.

Doesn't mean she is ridiculously large, I wasn't, but she might be. Although if you have nosed through the photos and decided she doesn't exist is fat, why come on here and tell everyone?

HavanaSlife · 21/08/2014 20:44

Anyway they did have an appropriate version by the sounds of it.

I was a slim kid, I'm totally fat now, but as a slim size 8 kid no size of school blouse would button properly without being gappy due to my boobs, had to wear jumpers year round to cover it. Same with my slimmer older sister.

Not good if they need an 18 skirt though - unless theyre really, really tall and the skirt has to be a regulation length and only the 18 is made longer.

Owllady · 21/08/2014 20:46

How many fat kids are there??
I haven't seen her many at all

scarletoconnor · 21/08/2014 20:46

oh lovely a 'fat' child bashing thread

TheCraicDealer · 21/08/2014 20:48

The OP's not bitching about the child, rather pointing out that the girl's mother must be wired up to the moon to think that wearing a lady's size 18 at 11 years old is in any way "normal". Also agree with Bogey (again) that whilst there could be an underlying medical issue, it's much more likely that the poor kid has been raised with an unhealthy attitude to food by her parents, and hasn't had the correct nutritional choices made for her. That's bad parenting and we shouldn't be afraid to call people out on it.

To be fair, kids are getting bigger. I could see the mum's point if her DD was having to get her clothes in a size 12 or 14. But size 18? At 11? If that's not a massive flashing sign to alert you to the risk to your DD's health I don't know what is.

I worked in a school outfitters and parents just don't see their kids and their bodies sometimes. Saying things like, "get him a 40" chest, he'll grow into it" when he's not five foot, ignoring their DD's at least C-cup breasts so she constantly blushes and crosses her arms out of embarrassment, being shocked that we have to have patterned shirts specially made because we don't make them above a size 22 as standard....look at your children!

creampie · 21/08/2014 20:51

Just as a useless aside, you can't really inherit Prader-Willi syndrome as such. It's a random genetic mutation somewhere (chr 11q15 off the top of my head). If you get it from your father you get PWS. If you get the same mutation but from your mother, you get angelmans syndrome.

Mrsjayy · 21/08/2014 20:52

Yes the mother is deluded the op even checked pictures out to see how fat she was so yes she is bitching about a fat kid

Andallmyhopeisgone · 21/08/2014 20:52

But she's not calling her on it, she's bitching about it behind her back on here. To cause outrage.

Owllady · 21/08/2014 20:54

Really creampie? That.s interesting

The girl must be quite tall if she fitted into a ladies size 18 the proportions would be out

Tallypet · 21/08/2014 20:58

Wow! If you're concerned about us adults judging a child's weight and getting prissy about it just imagine what the kids in her year/class/school say about her!

We can say what we want about bullying/fat shaming/fat comments etc... don't bully/ be nice. The cold hard facts are:
Child is over weight and will be judged. Just the same way as anyone else 'different' is judged (in high school).

Parents have absolutely no excuse this day in age to claim ignorance re a healthy diet for their kids. I feel sorry for this girl.

Woops! Sorry for double post Blush

Mintyy · 21/08/2014 21:03

Yes, I feel sorry for this girl, especially as she has been made the subject of a judgey Mumsnet discussion.

Tallypet · 21/08/2014 21:06

It's not not judgey at all.

Please, if you saw a preteen fitting in a size 14,16 or 18 would you not question it?

Tallypet - I suppose I might think "that poor girl is very overweight and possibly her parents are the cause" but why on earth would I start a thread on Mumsnet about it? It has been done expressly for the purpose of getting everyone all exercised about overweight children. It is utterly pointless and finger-pointing.

TheBogQueen · 21/08/2014 21:30

Yup that's mumsnet in a nutshell. Grin

WaltJesseMikeGus · 21/08/2014 21:32

I worked with a woman who at the time I left had a daughter around 18months.

I see photos of this child in Facebook (who must be around 4 now) and it upsets me at how big she is because I just think she's an innocent child who has been brought up on bad choices made by her parents and it's the little girl who will suffer - health wise and even bullied at school. It makes me so angry.

I would probably get flamed for saying that but it's how I feel and I genuinely think she has not been given the best start in life.
