Cake - am I wrong?

Just home from a mini get together at a friends. There were four women and nine dc's under 5 between us. We have all taken a turn to host and this was the first afternoon at this woman's house.

I took along a home baked cake, another lady took a fruit loaf and third lady brought strawberries and blueberries.

When it came time for tea and cake I asked DD what she would like a piece of and the host piped up 'children don't eat cake in our house, there are biscuits in the playroom'. I politely pointed out that DD had helped make the cake and she is allowed small treats and she replied 'homemade cake is for adults here'. The hosts children ate cake on the previous play dates.
Luckily DD went and got a biscuit happily but it left me feeling uneasy. Am I wrong?

Have the kids devour the cake that is

QuickQuickSloe · 21/08/2014 14:59

Maybe she was worried about crumbs? Still very mean though.

ShelaghTurner · 21/08/2014 15:02

Weirdo. Cake is one of life's pleasures for children and adults alike. I hate stingy cake people.

Gileswithachainsaw · 21/08/2014 15:06

Crumbs?

That's what plates are for!

Plus most biscuits are crumbly too

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 21/08/2014 15:07

But surely homemade cake is better for children than biscuits, you know exactly what's in it.

She sounds like hard work. I would not be visiting again.

MaryWestmacott · 21/08/2014 15:08

Well, at least you know not to bother with her again...

FunkyBoldRibena · 21/08/2014 15:09

You made the cake and she wouldn't let your kid have the cake?

Did you leave it there or take it home?

Karenthetoadslayer · 21/08/2014 15:14

Did anybody react to this at all? What did the other mums think outside after you all had left?

PeterParkerSays · 21/08/2014 15:16

Please tell me you took your cake home with you afterwards

CeliaFate · 21/08/2014 15:17

She sounds like an utter dick. "Children don't eat cake in our house." Who the hell says that?!

WildFlowersAttractBees · 21/08/2014 15:18

She asked each adult what they wanted then cut them a slice. The kids got a few mini animal biscuits each. I assume she plans to eat the rest or give it to others, no idea tbh.

You live and learn.

Some people are very odd about these things. My mother hated us accepting chocolate biscuits in other peoples' houses because she thought we looked more virtuous and polite if we didn't, and there was definitely food for children and food for adults at home. This left its imprint as I remember being shocked when my DP's children felt free to help themselves to Pringles as I thought they were more of an adult treat Blush. In my defence I had enough self-awareness to say nothing and eventually to realize that this was quite an arsey attitude. Give your DD at least two large slices of cake, OP, and don't go back to weird woman's house.

Karenthetoadslayer · 21/08/2014 15:19

In a similar situation one of the teacher pleasing mums brought an expensive chocolate cake that she had made in a patisserie into our local school. She gave it to the class teacher and it was supposed to be for staff. The teacher shared the cake with the children instead. DS said it was delicious. Grin

The mum in question loudly complained to everyone about this after school in the playground.

Ilovenicesoap · 21/08/2014 15:19

I would have given my slice to DD and smiled at her in a PA way!!
Sounds like she wanted leftovers .

tittifilarious · 21/08/2014 15:20

It's up to her what goes on in her house, but, seeing that she had been to other get togethers and knew what the format was, she could have quite easily said "ok, my turn to host next. Could I just ask you to bear in mind in my house the children don't have cake? Ok see you next week".

Also, what's the difference between eating cakes and eating biscuits?

ouryve · 21/08/2014 15:22

How rude.

I'd have taken an extremely large piece and shared it with my kids.

Gileswithachainsaw · 21/08/2014 15:23

Love your ds's teacher karenGrin

Karenthetoadslayer · 21/08/2014 15:23

My children would consider this child abuse Grin

ouryve · 21/08/2014 15:24

And you should have taken your lovely cake back home with you :o

Karenthetoadslayer · 21/08/2014 15:27

Yes Giles we were all sniggering at this lady's red face when the DCs came out after school with huge slices of cake. It was a specially ordered huge cake.

She was an avid helper at the school and volunteered to water the plants in the school's veg patch in the holidays bringing her own water, as the water was turned off.

Gileswithachainsaw · 21/08/2014 15:29

You soooo have to get her to invite you all for dinner.

See if she feeds you all fancy steak with all the sides then feeds the kids turkey dinosaurs or something.

Vivacia · 21/08/2014 15:31

Please provide Haribo and cola for the playroom occupants next time you're the host.

Gileswithachainsaw · 21/08/2014 15:31

I'd have thought how lovely it was she shared it with the children.

Sounds hilarious though Grin

MagratsHair · 21/08/2014 15:32

I think we could have a new Mrs Bonkers here!

Invite her to dinner OP, & get out the Pom Bears :)

strawberryangel · 21/08/2014 15:34

I'd have taken my homemade cake back, I think, so I could share it with my children at home. What a bitch.
