..to think its ok to put clothes back in wardrobe after wearing?!

Ok so it's my first AIBU and I'm scared, so be nice. I'm just intrigued to know others thoughts are on this...

My DH is a very naturally clean, neat, organised person. I'm not, but I've worked at it since we got married 12 years ago and things are in a reasonable state now..

So, the crux of the problem. DH believes that once clothes have been worn, they can't be returned to the wardrobe/chest of drawers until they've been washed, as they might contaminate the clean clothes in there. I've gone along with this as he did the laundry when we first got married and both worked. Now I do mine and the DCs as I'm a SAHM I've been thinking about it more and it bugs me because...

  1. There are some clothes that don't need washing immediately, such as jeans, woollies, maybe a t-shirt. I can't put these clothes away at the end of the day so they end up in a pile on the sofa, or on the floor, or over a chair.

  2. I end up wearing the same clothes (especially jeans) as I'd rather wear something that is already out than pull out something else.

So, AIBU to think it would be ok to put clothes that have been worn but are not visibly dirty, back in the cupboard at the end of the day? What does everyone else do??

Sorry if it makes no sense..

Cardigans, coats, suits yes. Anything else goes in the wash or is hung on the end of the bed to wear again.
Now off to RTFT to see where I fit on the cleanliness scale!

ohmymimi · 21/08/2014 20:01

Have now smelt all over all my jeans in my jeans' drawer. They do not smell, other than the faintest whiff of my perfume. I've worn some of them at least 5 times against my bare legs.Shock. I must have non-biodegradable skin cells or I put on so much body lotion they are glued to my body

ohmymimi · 21/08/2014 20:04

I will not be sniffing any further items of clothing today. I'm all sniffed out.Smile

I am shocked at how anal people are about hygiene. The thought never crossed my mind that they shouldn't hang together, let alone that they would 'contaminate' each other.

Knickers and socks get one wear before washing, but everything else is washed as and when it's needed and is always put back in the wardrobe / drawer. Never had a problem with moths and haven't caught any horrible diseases either!

Seriously, what's the worst that could happen?

scottishmummy · 21/08/2014 20:51

How funny,anal about hygiene

edamsavestheday · 21/08/2014 21:01

I drive dh mad by hanging clothes I've worn once outside the wardrobe - putting them back would just feel WRONG. Dh hates it. But all his clothes end up piled on a chair anyway.

I've just fully realised that (in the absence of ocd etc) this is the definition of a first world problem.

We have clothes. We have wardrobes. We live in a comparatively clean environment. I can't imagine trying to explain this debate to someone in less privileged circumstances. They would just keep thinking they must have misunderstood.

combust22 · 21/08/2014 21:48

edam- but your bedroom must end up looking a mess. I sometimes wear an outfit for a few hours- a meeting with a friend, an interview etc. It could be two months then before I wear that ( unwashed garment) again. So it sits in your bedroom gathering dust until you wear it again.
Do you change your sheets every day too?

FreeWee · 21/08/2014 21:53

Crikey. I was proud of my system where I turn the hangers round & have a 'worn once' section of my wardrobe & the right hand side of my drawers. Apparently I am due moth geddon & worse!! Still gonna stick to my system! Smile

Boysclothes · 21/08/2014 22:51

We need LaQueen on this thread to tell us the right thing to do. I'm feeling all at sea now. Also worried about mothgeddon.

LittleBearPad · 21/08/2014 22:53

But Combust in those circumstances I'd wash it/dry clean it. Maybe you have more clothes than me too.

KnittedJimmyChoos · 21/08/2014 22:55

boys just be aware of moths, our warmer winters can lead to mass outbreaks of them, warm and wet.

I agree we need La Queen here to help us. She will know what to do with cashmere knits Grin

KnittedJimmyChoos · 21/08/2014 22:57

I spent over 100 pounds on moths crap this spring, sprays, lavender oils, moth hormone traps....I emptied all my drawers out into the garden every single one, to expose all to bright lights, washed every item on 60, spent a fortune on dry cleaning other crap...its been a bloody nightmare. emptying every wardrobe, putting all on washing line, traipsing in and out.

Boysclothes · 21/08/2014 22:58

I am aware of moths, as in I know they exist. But how do I tell if they are eating my cashmere knits!! (Actually one knit, but don't tell LaQueen).

Boysclothes · 21/08/2014 22:59

Please stop knitted because you're making me cry. (Incidentally, apt username! Life and art have truly collided there ).

Pipbin · 21/08/2014 23:04

We've had moths eat our carpet.
I recommend this stuff: www.johnlewis.com/acana-carpet-fabrics-moth-killer-and-freshener/p231892921
It killed them all, killed them to death.

Cedar does the sum total of fuck all.

Boysclothes · 21/08/2014 23:06

If they can eat carpets then fuck it, they win. How can you fight that?

AliMonkey · 21/08/2014 23:24

Those who don't put things back in wardrobe due to not knowing whether already been worn (rather than through fears of moths or contamination) just need the hanger system. Have all hangers facing same way eg hangs over anti clockwise. Then anything put back in after one wear gets the hanger put in opposite way. Only works for things on hangers obviously but I happen to have a little shelf in wardrobe for trousers that have been worn. Skirts, cardis and jackets get washed when they seem to need it.

KnittedJimmyChoos · 21/08/2014 23:25

We have two large wool rugs, both vacumed loads under sofas and under the rug itself, shoved tons of moths stuff under the rugs too and spray from lakeland.

just watch out for small slivery looking moths, as said I used to see them and never thought anything of it....if you see one, dont look - kill.
keep airing clothes, checking for damage. prevention better than cure and keep clothes clean.

Pipbin · 21/08/2014 23:28

Well they only ate the bits in the corners or under the furniture.

They might have had tasty carpet to eat but now are dead and won't eat any more carpet. Dead moth bastards.

trixymalixy · 21/08/2014 23:28

It has never occurred to me to put once worn clothes back in the wardrobe. I have a chair that such clothes get thrown over. My bedroom will look a whole lot neater now as I'm going to start putting them backin the wardrobe.

SocialFool · 22/08/2014 06:09

Cointreau I have pairs of jeans. One good pair that gets wears on the rare occasions I go out (originally bought for work) and two other pairs. Wear one for a week then wash, unless I have to wash it sooner, then I have one pair to wear whilst that pair is in the wash. Except that the knees wore through a couple of weeks ago and I can't afford to buy a new pair yet which is throwing my routine off a bit!

Flipflops7 · 22/08/2014 06:46

My washing and storing habits sound quite average for the thread.

Moths, though - I had a new, unworn wool and silk cardigan eaten, and DH and I had four clean cashmere jumpers between us destroyed by moths so we only buy lambswool or merino now.
