..to think its ok to put clothes back in wardrobe after wearing?!

tinklykeys · 20/08/2014 20:48

Ok so it's my first AIBU and I'm scared, so be nice. I'm just intrigued to know others thoughts are on this...

My DH is a very naturally clean, neat, organised person. I'm not, but I've worked at it since we got married 12 years ago and things are in a reasonable state now..

So, the crux of the problem. DH believes that once clothes have been worn, they can't be returned to the wardrobe/chest of drawers until they've been washed, as they might contaminate the clean clothes in there. I've gone along with this as he did the laundry when we first got married and both worked. Now I do mine and the DCs as I'm a SAHM I've been thinking about it more and it bugs me because...

  1. There are some clothes that don't need washing immediately, such as jeans, woollies, maybe a t-shirt. I can't put these clothes away at the end of the day so they end up in a pile on the sofa, or on the floor, or over a chair.

  2. I end up wearing the same clothes (especially jeans) as I'd rather wear something that is already out than pull out something else.

So, AIBU to think it would be ok to put clothes that have been worn but are not visibly dirty, back in the cupboard at the end of the day? What does everyone else do??

Sorry if it makes no sense..

Underwear, pyjamas, socks and tops are wear once then wash for me.
Jeans, dresses and skirts, unless there's marks on them, will be put back in the wardrobe and worn again a few days later then probably washed that time.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/08/2014 07:47

Actually I do wear skirts more than once and put them away again, but I wear them so rarely (once or twice a year) that it hardly counts. Same with proper trousers (rarely wear) and my dresses are all light jersey types. I wear jeans more than once but on consecutive days, so they stay out. I rarely wear cardis or jumpers (don't feel the cold much, my extra layer in the winter is a vest) - the only cardi I wear regularly is a chunky one that lives on a peg in the hall with coats. Pretty well everything else is worn once because I sweat a lot. We do about 7 loads of washing a week including towels and sheets (family of 4), line dry, iron as little as possible and our water bill is £29 a month. I'm ok with that.

bananaleaf · 21/08/2014 07:49

*I was certain this thread would be a landslide agreeing your DH was unreasonable.

I'm with you OP - never considered before that it wasn't ok. Never even crossed my mind*

^^
Me too! I feel dirty now Blush
Think I'm going to clean out my wardrobe...

SocialFool · 21/08/2014 07:56

We each have a coat stand in the corner of the bedroom. Worn clothes go on that until they have been worn enough to go in the wash. I don't like putting clothes back in the cupboard unless they are clean. But I refuse to wash clothes that have just been worn once and still look clean - obviously this is just trousers, jumpers and occasionally the DC's clothes although they seem to be dirt magnets. I seem to be the only person in my block of flats who uses the washing machine more than once a week!

whois · 21/08/2014 07:56

Can't believe the number of people who wash EVERYTHING after one wear.

How are jeans dirty after one wear? No owner peoples water and electricity bills are so high.

Socks, pants and tshirt washed after one wear. Unless maybe I've put a tshirt on after my shower in the evening for a few hours, then I might wear it again.

Bras generally get 2 days unless I've got sweaty.

Thin tight jumpers generally one or two wears.

Skirts, jeans, loose hoodys... When they get actually dirty.

bubalou · 21/08/2014 08:03

Haha, literally didn't realise this was a thing! Not going to lie a lot of you sound fucking crazy to me Grin

I have never been someone that washed clothes after one wear. I don't sweat a lot and only wear some for an hour or two. I'm not going to make a load more work for myself and ruin clothes even quicker by washing them every single time I wear them.

As for the moth comment - I've never ever had a moth problem. Shock They mostly are attracted to older houses that aren't as clean as that is where they breed and multiply. Also they only like natural fibres. I don't own silk or cashmere Wink

I won't be changing my ways.

ithoughtofitfirst · 21/08/2014 08:05

It's fine mun OP don't be daft !

Washing jeans after one wear?

CouldntGiveAMonkeysToss · 21/08/2014 08:09

I have a basket in our bedroom for clothes that have been worn but aren't dirty. I don't wash clothes after every wash but don't want to put them back in the wardrobe either so we put them in the basket and wear again.

Dolly80 · 21/08/2014 08:12

I'm another who washes underwear, socks and some tops after one wear but the rest gets rehung. Never had moths or been told I stink! My partner washes underwear, socks and all his tops but will happily wear his jeans until they could walk to the machine on their own Hmm My daughters clothes are generally one wear, due to mess, but if she's only worn them for a short time or they're visibly still clean (usually trousers) they get rehung too.

Life's too short to constantly wash clothes!

Withmyfeetinthesink · 21/08/2014 08:15

This is amazing.

The people who are on the one-wash side - are you like the other types on MN who claim that cereal is shit-in-a-box and expecting thank-you letters for gifts is selfish? I never meet people like that in real life, so maybe the clothes washing thing is just part of that too.

How on earth do jeans get creased?

How on earth do you cope with washing everything after one wash?
How do you manage to do anything at all if you wash, dry, iron, take stuff to dry cleaning all the time? The managing of it must be a full-time job.

Apart from tights and knickers, if other things are smelly after a day, the problem isn't the clothes Hmm . . .

I have never taken anything to dry cleaning in my life.
I have never had moths in my wardrobe.
I don't smell . . .

or maybe I do, but I'm just too filthy to notice.

diddl · 21/08/2014 08:16

i tend to hang re wearable stuff on the outside of the wardrobe.

Andallmyhopeisgone · 21/08/2014 08:17

Eh? but hardly anyone's said they wash everything after one wear. Only one or two people Confused

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/08/2014 08:18

I've never told anyone they stink, but I've met a few people who could definitely have done to wash their clothes a bit more often. I guess they can't smell it on themselves.

Dolly80 · 21/08/2014 08:25

My partner told me I stunk after an aerobics class last night so I'm quietly confident he'd tell me if my clothes stunk (and yes my aerobics wear is definitely wash after one wear stuff Wink)

LightastheBreeze · 21/08/2014 08:30

We have had moths, as I found moth holes in my woollens about 3 years ago, since then I've used the sachets and haven't had a problem. It was stuff in drawers that was moth-eaten, I had a cashmere scarf, luckily very cheap in the sale half eaten. I then read a lot about moths as I didn't want to lose more clothes and it said that they like dark undisturbed places and womens sweat scent best.

We do have a lot of moths flying around in the summer and find them settled on windows.

unlucky83 · 21/08/2014 08:41

My house is less than 40 yrs old - and had moths and carpet beetles...
We do have a lot of clutter stored away though ...and did have lots of textiles. (Not anymore - got rid of lots and everything that isn't used regularly is in vac bags)

I first noticed the moths breaking up a sofa that came with the house - it looked clean enough but when I took the bottom off I found it had dog biscuits spilled inside - and moth larvae in the bottom seam - Yuk

Carpet beetle adult beetles can come inside with line dried clothes.
I found them in a bin bag of (clean) clothes that had been in my DDs wardrobe for a year or so - as she grew out of things I was putting them there for charity shop/recycling. When it was full I came to sort through it and found a decimated woollen jumper....but by then they had spread everywhere. (I also found them in a push floor sweeper kept in a cupboard upstairs - rarely used -as I mainly just used the vacuum)

I wear the same clothes everyday till they need a wash (not underwear!) but DP has a rail on the back of the door now for his clothes to be reworn.

If it was something I rarely wear I would wash it after one wear -but then it gets stored in a vac bag...

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 21/08/2014 08:51

What about things like suits?! I wear suits to work and dry clean them every so often... in the mean time they certainly go back in the wardrobe. I wash the shirt/top and tights after 1 wear of course, but the skirt/jacket gets worn a few times!

Notso · 21/08/2014 08:52

The only people I have come across who have smelled like their clothes were dirty have had serious problems in their lives and their clothing was usually visibly dirty.

Most people I have met either smell of fabric softener, perfume, nothing or sometimes like cooking or cigarettes.

My critical Mum would soon tell me if I smelled bad. She's quick to tell me if I have coffee breath Hmm

I don't know how anyone could was jeans after one use, they only get comfy after a couple of days wear.

tobysmum77 · 21/08/2014 08:56

only on mumsnet Grin

Pipbin · 21/08/2014 08:59

As a previous poster said, I'm sure if we had to wash our clothes like our great grandmothers did, standing over a tub with a washing dolly, then they would last a lot longer than one day.

Thanks so much for all the responses!! Some of you seem to be up in arms about posters who wash everything after one wear, but there actually don't seem to be many of those. There are however lots of people who definitely wouldn't put worn clothes back in the wardrobe, and that's the bit that fascinates me, as I thought my DH was a complete one off!

As for 'only on Mumsnet', surely Mumsnet represents a fair cross section of society so should give a balanced view... or maybe that's a question for another thread!!

I'm still not getting the outrage. Isn't everyone saying pretty much the same thing? Grin Only difference being where clothes are stored between washes, which doesn't really matter anyway.

Andallmyhopeisgone · 21/08/2014 09:06

between wears, not washes.
