To think place marking ruins threads?

I appreciate that people "mark their place" on a thread because it's the most effective way for them to find that specific thread again. I know that the "watch thread" function doesn't work for some people, and that posting on a thread informs you if the thread is deleted whereas watching a thread doesn't.

But I've been on many other Internet forums in my time, and have never come across one where the users fill up pages and pages of threads with "place marking" posts - which means they take ages to read! Surely MNHQ could solve this by making the "watch thread" function work as well as posting clearly does, to help people follow a specific thread?

And so in the mean time if you have nothing to add to a popular thread other that writing "marking my place", and it is the kind of thread that is very unlikely to be deleted, and if the "watch thread" function works perfectly well for you - then would it be unreasonable to think you should use it, rather than filling the thread with pointless posts?

It's in my Watch List.
HTH

Grin

(And I agree with the OP)

honeybeeridiculous · 17/08/2014 17:39

Iv put it on my watch list twice and it's gone! Shock

mazylou · 17/08/2014 18:31

Another couple of forums I use have a "subscribe to thread" function, so you can find where you were on it, you don't even have to post on the thread to be subscribed. It also has an "unread" function, so you can display all the posts you haven't read on a busy thread.

It's great!

Changebagsandgladrags · 17/08/2014 19:09

Let me piss on this thread so I can find it later type thing?

StandsOnGoldenSands · 17/08/2014 19:26

I don't have the bookmark button (am on a phone, but the Internet not the app). Is there a way to switch it on or summat? I usually watch threads, how is bookmark different to watch, can anyone please tell me?

Nanny0gg · 17/08/2014 19:28

Are you logged in to MN? It doesn't work unless you are.

StandsOnGoldenSands · 17/08/2014 19:43

Yup. Always am.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/08/2014 20:04

does get a bit tedious reading

marking or a . etc

i just bookmark and highlight op, think is green and my posts are purple and is easily found whether in ipad/lappy or iphone

Lemuriformes · 17/08/2014 20:06

I'm on my phone using the Internet not the app - if I tap a post I get a little blue Bookmark box up on the right - tap on that and it saves your place. Next time up you open the thread it takes you there.

Of course you have to remember you wanted to check on that thread...

ADHDNoodles · 17/08/2014 20:11

Watching threads doesn't tell you where you left off. Posting you can highlight your name and pick up where you were. Otherwise you're stuck rereading posts for a little bit.

I don't do it, I'm usually more curious about what the OP has to say than the random comments. That is fixed by just reading the highlighted posts.

JuniperTisane · 17/08/2014 20:17

On the mobile site (not the app):

tap 'Customise'
scroll down to 'Display bookmark links?'
select 'yes'

you now have bookmarking.

Lemuriformes · 17/08/2014 20:20

Though I just noticed that it only works on the new style Mumsnet site - not classic or whatever the other display styles are called.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 17/08/2014 20:21

Is there a way on the app of highlighting your own posts? I used to like that on the desktop site.

JuniperTisane · 17/08/2014 20:23

No. Ditch the app and use the mobile site instead. Its far more user-friendly.

Pipbin · 17/08/2014 20:26

I didn't know about bookmarks. This is as much of a revalation as highlighting the op's posts.

StandsOnGoldenSands · 17/08/2014 20:35

Ooh Juniper, thank you so much!

QuacksLikeADuck · 17/08/2014 20:55

Wow, I had no idea about bookmarking either! Why on earth is that not switched on by default? ... MNHQ are you listening?

I agree that the app is crap, but bookmarking on the mobile site does indeed seems to be the solution to this issue!

Fairenuff · 17/08/2014 21:18

Bookmarking is great, one of those things that when you have it you wonder how you ever managed without it.

DameEdnasBridesmaid · 17/08/2014 21:28

YADNBU. I just don't get 'marking my place'. I'd feel a right tit putting that and nobody even knows me.

Watch and bookmark FFS!

And I agree with the poster who said I hope the parking thread gets filled up and the tits 'marking their place' never find out what happened.
