To think place marking ruins threads?

QuacksLikeADuck · 17/08/2014 10:37

I appreciate that people "mark their place" on a thread because it's the most effective way for them to find that specific thread again. I know that the "watch thread" function doesn't work for some people, and that posting on a thread informs you if the thread is deleted whereas watching a thread doesn't.

But I've been on many other Internet forums in my time, and have never come across one where the users fill up pages and pages of threads with "place marking" posts - which means they take ages to read! Surely MNHQ could solve this by making the "watch thread" function work as well as posting clearly does, to help people follow a specific thread?

And so in the mean time if you have nothing to add to a popular thread other that writing "marking my place", and it is the kind of thread that is very unlikely to be deleted, and if the "watch thread" function works perfectly well for you - then would it be unreasonable to think you should use it, rather than filling the thread with pointless posts?

How odd. Doesn't everyone have the 'bookmark' function?

QuacksLikeADuck · 17/08/2014 11:52

Hmm, well maybe there should be a new unwritten rule that if you want to do a boring placemark, then a single dot is best, to allow others to easily scroll past!

Oooh me, I placed marked on the parking thread. Shameless.
(Is this a place marking post?)

Pass that grip....

Kimaroo · 17/08/2014 11:54

I don't do this often and have never seen it as a problem but just want to say that the mobile app has no useful features at all! What's bookmarking when it's at home?! Watched threads don't seem to be in any order and I tend to keep that for historic stuff like good books to read, recipes, what to take to uni etc so they are there when I need them. I like to read current threads especially in philosophy and the feminist boards where I learn stuff but can't necessarily make a contribution so marking is the only option otherwise I can't find them again later in the day!

DoctorLawn · 17/08/2014 11:59

I don't use the MN app for this very reason - I can bookmark on the laptop, but that option isn't available to me on the phone. I loathe place marking so I just won't do it (my choice, I know). So an added problem is reading a thread on my phone, being unable to bookmark on the app and then having to scroll past everything I've already read later on the PC.

I'd really welcome a bookmark option on the app.

Kimaroo · 17/08/2014 12:09

The best thing that could be added to the mobile app is to be able to highlight op and own threads. Then if you did make a comment at least you could skim through to the vicinity of your last visit.

Thurlow · 17/08/2014 12:12

The Android app is utterly rubbish. To be fair HQ know this - but you can't bookmark, your watched threads are out of order, you can't have the op#s posts in a colour - it's impossible to 'follow' a thread on the app

Perfectlypurple · 17/08/2014 12:38

I use the mobile site on my Samsung and can get bookmarks etc.

Fairenuff · 17/08/2014 12:39

I would love that parking thread to fill up with place markers so that OP can't update when she gets back.

Oh the irony Grin

YANBU Hate hate hate place marking use the bookmark and watch function

Lumineer · 17/08/2014 13:07

I genuinely don't understand why people can't use Watch this Thread and then Bookmark the post they are up to. What is the issue with those buttons?

I'm only ever on my phone using MN so it must be possible on phones.

SisterMoonshine · 17/08/2014 13:13

So long as it's a lighthearted thread, I really like it.
You can see how many people are rooting for the OP, or waiting to see what happens.
It can be a little bit of excitement in your day and you know you're sharing it with lots of others.

Thurlow · 17/08/2014 13:14

Lumineer, it's possible on the mobile site but not on the Android app. Bookmark doesn't exist on the app.

MyFairyKing · 17/08/2014 14:42

You don't need to post to say you're place marking though. Just post a short one liner, such as; YABU, OP. HTH. Grin

halfdrunkcoffee · 17/08/2014 14:45

I don't write it myself - I add the thread to a watch list. I've been on other forums where many people write "subbing" when they could just subscribe to the thread without writing this. I haven't found it really fills up threads though.

CatsCantTwerk · 17/08/2014 15:25

Thanks Perfectlypurple. I have changed it in customise but it doesn't seem to have changed anything Confused

CatsCantTwerk · 17/08/2014 15:28

I get it now ..Thank You

CatsCantTwerk · 17/08/2014 15:29

Actually, I don't get it Grin

Where are your 'bookmarks' ?

Perfectlypurple · 17/08/2014 15:34

Hopefully you can see pictures. Have done a screen shot. Bookmarks are the blue buttons.

MostWicked · 17/08/2014 16:10

So I never knew bookmarks existed until I read this thread!
I have now customised my settings a bit more to see if that makes it easier to return to the last post I read.

SecretWitch · 17/08/2014 16:11

Isn't rubbernecking essentially what MN is about?
