to think that my 8 year old is not 'young for her age' because she likes Frozen?

I think this is ridiculous. An acquaintance popped round to borrow something yesterday and commented thatcDD is 'very young for her age' because she was running around in her frozen dress (made by grandma and DD adores it), singing various songs?

She was actually quite rude about it, saying how her DD's were 'long past' that stage when they were 8. It's not important, I know, but she really pissed me off. I don't think she's too old for it at all and told her so. Cow.

Perhaps this 'friend' prefers to see 8 year old girls with crop tops and high cut denim shorts and even a bit of lippy? A fake tan maybe Hmm

MiscellaneousAssortment · 11/08/2014 20:47

Ignore her. Your poor dd, I hope you can persuade her that the mother had some very odd views and not what anyone else thinks.

I would be angry at her desire to be snooty/ above herself in some way had stamped put for dd's desire to be a normal child.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 11/08/2014 20:47

My teen dd is on holiday in Greece and skyped me.

She's homesick and we mouthed let it goto each other.

Lip trembling now!

Your neighbour is nuts op.

WilburIsSomePig · 11/08/2014 21:10

Aw thank you folks there are such lovely posts on here.

Well DD didn't stay away from her Elsa dress for long and she has been singing happily for most of the afternoon. Just how it should be! :)

Well my 19yr old son thinks Frozen is one of the best Disney films made and he's a bit of a Disney connoisseur, he doesn't have the dress though GrinGrin

BramwellBrown · 11/08/2014 21:27

I had my 10 and and 11 year old siblings staying over last week and they forced me to watch frozen and then woke me up the following morning with 'do you want to build a snowman', if they had frozen dresses I've no doubt they would have worn them.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclinatio · 11/08/2014 21:32

I'm glad she's back in her dress.

I hope you distance yourself from your 'friend' - your DD doesn't need to be exposed to that kind of shite.

I was going to say little one, who is 9 next month doesn't dress up and certainly not as a princess Hmm

Hoppinggreen · 11/08/2014 21:41

Well my 9 year old and her friends have been out of dressing up for a while now, one of their group does it but she has mild SN and they all accept it as " it's what x does", they aren't nasty about her at all but it's not something the rest of them do any more.
They all love Frozen, watch it and sing along but they wouldn't dress up and dance around to it in an Elsa or Ana dress
Having said that they are all different and there is nothing wrong with a child of any age dressing up if they want to, the neighbour was being a bit nasty.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 11/08/2014 22:09

Another Frozen fan here.

And I love Tinkerbell and the pirate fairies and need to find time to watch the DVD.

ChubbyKitty · 11/08/2014 22:21

Not in the slightest bit too old for Frozen.

wonders how to convince her own grandmother to make a size 12 Elsa dress

Owllady · 11/08/2014 22:25

My teenagers watch it

ghostmous3 · 11/08/2014 23:48

My 12 year old dd1 loves frozen, can sing all the songs and quote big chunks from the script. She still plays with dolls and is obsessed with My Little Pony, Monster High and Ever After High.

Shes also just developed a huge crush on Theo James, plays on Minecraft and is a well adjusted kid.

I cant believe that some people believe that 8 is too old to be dressing up, rather that than be interested in the BGT and 1d sort of shite.

ADHDNoodles · 12/08/2014 01:03

Shit I'm almost 30, and I'd run around in a Frozen dress singing. Fuck her.

Baby DD loves it when I sing "Do you wanna be a snowman?" to her, only I replace the last part of the sentence to be silly. "Do you wanna drink a bottle?" Grin

cjdamoo · 12/08/2014 01:31

My 3 year old is Frozen obsessed so I made both her and I Elsa dresses. My 15 year old son still dresses up too in his own geeky way and has both a 10th Dr outfit and a Jedi costume. Long may it continue.

Jellypudmum · 12/08/2014 01:44

I have been hunting (and finally gotSmile) a frozen dress for my dd who is 8 / almost 9. Never crossed my mind she should have grown out of that stage yetShock.
Long may it continue and she have a carefree childhood as long as possible!

Hulababy · 12/08/2014 01:48

I'm in Florida at the moment and can confirm that frozen appears to cover all age ranges at the moment. Today we have been at Hollywood studios and it is frozen obsessed!

You see a lot of children, especially girls, dressed up in the parks. The big thing for those with spare $$$ is the Bibbity Bobbety Boo make up thing. Was at downtown Disney last night and lots of young girls were coming out of it and you see them in the parks having been there beforehand for hair, face paint, costume and glitter. The most popular costume by far this visit is Anna and Elsa.

The frozen princess dresses are being worn everywhere - seems to be primarily primary school ages girls from about 4 to about 10.

So 8y is pretty much target age.

It's lovely that girls of this age want to dress up and play imaginative games. I always find it ever so sad that some children seem to pass through childhood so quickly and leave behind role play and make believe before they even reach juniors let alone end of primary. I hope your girl continues to enjoy this part of childhood and doesn't feel she needs to grow up too fast!

FWIW dd is 12 and all her friends are into Frozen. I think dd would have been quite tempted by the costumes if she thought she would get away with it! She's already after an Olaf soft toy as it is.

Hulababy · 12/08/2014 01:57

And yes it's a PG not a U. All the children at the infant school I work at wanted to watch it as their class target reward but couldn't - we are only allowed to show U rated unless we ask every parent to sign a form agreeing to their child watching it!

ShoeWhore · 12/08/2014 07:12

I remember my mum's friend making similar comments about me still playing with dolls when I was about 8 or 9. Little did she know it wasn't your average game of house but rather more subtle with a huge back story Wink

Anyway fast forward 30 odd years and I've the successful career, lots of travelling under my belt, a dh I adore, 3 fab dcs, some great friends etc. It certainly hasn't held me back in life!

I think your dd should just be herself and play what she wants.

Idontseeanyicegiants · 12/08/2014 09:20

DD1 actually watched it again last night, the execute meant when she saw the hidden Rapunzel and Eugene for the first time was funny! We had to rewind it several times and then find out the backstory..

Idontseeanyicegiants · 12/08/2014 09:20

FFS we need an edit option! Excitement, not execute meant!!

Fubsy · 12/08/2014 09:23

There are a lot of Easter eggs in Frozen that imply the makers were aiming it at all ages.

Flynn and Rapunzel can be sotted in a crowd scene, there are some other Disney characters dolls dotted around the shop, and of course the ever controversial "gay family"!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/08/2014 09:26

Ooo Hulababy - that happened in my DD's Y1 class (at an infants' school). Is one of the reasons the certificate was in my mind when I posted earlier on this thread. Am wondering if I'm one of your parents. Did they watch Despicable Me 2 instead?

Idontseeanyicegiants · 12/08/2014 09:27

I love watching for all the hidden characters in the Disney/Pixar films Smile
There's a brilliant 'conspiracy theory' floating around the web about how the Pixar films all take place in the same universe and are all connected. Weird, but wonderful.

LauraChant · 12/08/2014 09:37

We haven't seen Frozen. But I hope my boys are still playing imaginary games when they are 8 and older.

I had younger sisters and was definitely still playing made up games at 10. I got a Cabbage Patch Kid and ballgown Sindy for Christmas that year. They have the rest of their lives to talk about boys and make up - if they want to....
