to think that my 8 year old is not 'young for her age' because she likes Frozen?

I think this is ridiculous. An acquaintance popped round to borrow something yesterday and commented thatcDD is 'very young for her age' because she was running around in her frozen dress (made by grandma and DD adores it), singing various songs?

She was actually quite rude about it, saying how her DD's were 'long past' that stage when they were 8. It's not important, I know, but she really pissed me off. I don't think she's too old for it at all and told her so. Cow.

How odd, dressing up is still quite normal at that age. My 8 YO DS is very grown up for his age in most ways but he will often be dressed as a wrestler or something. I think a Frozen dress would be too far for him Grin but the dressing up/singing/dancing is perfectly normal at 8.

AugustaGloop · 11/08/2014 10:49

My DDs are 10 and 11. They have seen Frozen several times (and I expect the DVD to appear on a Christmas list) and often belt out the songs. They are not really into dressing up these days, but I don't think it has been that long since this stopped (and in fact they are very into making little movies on their iPods and suspect if they could get hold of some costumes they would happily dress up and did their own version).

In many ways they are getting quite grown up - have read/seen films like the Hunger Games, been to a couple of pop concerts (with me), like clothes shopping as an activity, wear slightly more grown up clothes (skinny jeans and short shorts etc) but I think it is great when DD2 gets out her collection of beanie boos or they play imaginary games together, which they do quite often.
Yesterday we went out for a walk and came across a playground. Although it was a pretty big one, their initial reaction was that apart from one or 2 bits of equipment it was a bit babyish for them. However, it did not take long for them to find ways to amuse themselves (they devised an obstacle course and timed each other, did various bits of acrobatics etc). One hour later they will still playing quite happily in a "babyish" playground. They were older than most of the other children there (but were very considerate of the younger children). if anyone had commented on them being a bit old I would definitely have either laughed or commented that it is better than being at home playing computer games.

I am happy to encourage them to become more independent and grown up where they seem ready or are pushing for it, but even more delighted when they show they are still little girls. I think the idea that there cannot be some of both is odd.

aprilanne · 11/08/2014 10:55

well eh i think spongebob square pants is the best cartoon ever .always laugh when i watch it .i am 44 so what does that say about me .what an eejit just ignore her .

Bingbongbinglybunglyboo · 11/08/2014 12:12

I love frozen. Would wear an Ana coronation dress if I could. When it all gets a bit much I put let it go on really load and belt it out. My kids tell me to stop singing. I'm 30. Ahhh! 31 god damn it!

Your 8 year old sounds like a really happy child, ignore the miserable old cow.

PosyFossilsShoes · 11/08/2014 13:50

I'm 32 and I like Frozen. I'll admit to being slightly young for my age though.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 11/08/2014 14:33

Wow, that person was so rude! and mean spirited too.

Like many other posters, DDs 12 and 10 love Frozen. I hear the songs blasted out all the time. They are no longer at dress up stage (except for Harry Potter games, with capes, wands, etc). 8 sounds just fine for dressing up.

And I totally agree with poster above who suggested you find your own put down regarding children growing up too fast...

BarbaraPalmer · 11/08/2014 14:40

my almost 8yo is at a musical theatre summer workshop this week, and they're doing Frozen. It's been the most popular week, and there's DC there right up to age 14.
I've not seen it myself, but DH downloaded the soundtrack after he went Grin.

LL12 · 11/08/2014 16:16

Very rude to say that. My 10 year old daughter loves it and so do I.

MuddlingAlongMum · 11/08/2014 16:38

I'm thirty five and I'd quite happily swish around dressed as Elsa belting out Let It Go if people wouldn't think it was a bit odd...
They are young for such a short time. We should embrace that!

SockPinchingMonster · 11/08/2014 18:00

Ignore her. Frozen is perfect for an 8 year old. Kids grow up way too fast these days, 6 year olds in my DT's class go on about which member of One Direction they fancy - which I think is quite frankly scary from a 6 year old. I would much rather my DD be into Princesses and fairies for the foreseeable future. Much better to act like a little girl at that age than a mini teenager.

littlewhitebag · 11/08/2014 18:42

My DD's (16 and 21) love frozen. DD2 would quite like an Elsa wedding dress when she marries! My DM loves it too and she is 73! She watches it with our 6yo niece. Plus and DH and I also love it and we are in our 50's.

PacificDogwood · 11/08/2014 18:45

My D Sons, aged 4 to 11, all love Frozen (the older ones might try to deny it, but know all the words to all the songs Grin). And yes, I like it too - I am a rather immature 48 yo. Sadly, my upper arms are not up to doing any of the dresses justice...

Sarahplane · 11/08/2014 18:56

My dd is nearly 8, nearly nine and loves fozen too. So do all her friends. I think most of them have grown out of most Disney Princess movies like cinderella but frozen seems to appeal to the older kids too.

FastWindow · 11/08/2014 18:57

41 here and always trying to persuade my ds4 to watch it again... It's a rate day I don't have at least one of the songs running around my head.

And three! Three! Choked up moments in the film!

Such a treat.

FastWindow · 11/08/2014 18:58

rare day. Obvs

ICanSeeTheSun · 11/08/2014 19:04

Well I am a 28 year old and I enjoyed the film. Dd is obsessed.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/08/2014 19:21

I'm sure I used to dress up at that age. I think that was about the age I read Swallows and Amazons, and we used to borrow mum's maiden and put it on its side with a table cloth over to be our tent, and take in biscuit tins of food and cutlery etc. And we definitely used to do Harry Potter when I was a lot bit older than that.

Maybe not princess things so much, but then a princess film hadn't just been released.

Btw, if anybody just wants generic dressing up clothes, have a look in TKMaxx. Ours had some gorgeous ones in recently, all velour and hooped skirts like this or this. I've seen ones with cloaks before and little velveteen doublets for boys.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/08/2014 19:24

If I were getting married in winter, I might seriously consider this!

gamescompendium · 11/08/2014 19:26

We've seen quite a few friends with older kids and they all love Frozen, right up to my 14 and 15 year old, oh so sophisticated nieces. And the 14 year is apparently very 'popular' so Frozen must be cool. So there OP's rude 'friend'.

MummyBeerest · 11/08/2014 19:41

8 year olds shouldn't be mature, in any way, shape or form.

I feel bad for her mature eight-year-olds who are probably dieting and filing their taxes.

MammaTJ Mon 11-Aug-14 09:16:38

She is in she 9-10 but I cannot find an Anna dress in her size!

MuddlingMackem · 11/08/2014 20:11

And for those of you who want an Elsa or Anna dress for yourselves, go mad, and just head to a local cosplay event to show it off. Even better if you can actually make your own. Grin

Boaty · 11/08/2014 20:19

DD arrived this morning for a visit bringing her Frozen DVD to watch....she is 22!!
We will be watching it together!
we may be both young for our ages too
Grin
Seriously OP, your acquaintance is rude and plain wrong!

Madsometimes · 11/08/2014 20:41

My dd's friends are all into Frozen at the age of 14.

More importantly, they are all cosplayers. ie. teenagers totally obsessed with dressing up as their favourite characters, often at Comic Con, sometimes just randomly. Some of them dress as Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony, most as characters from other Anime. Dd1 assures me there were plenty of cosplayers from Frozen, teenagers and adults at May Comic Con. Dd is so obsessed with cosplay that her birthday and Christmas lists are costumes and wigs.

Your dd is on trend!

Madsometimes · 11/08/2014 20:46

Adult Frozen cosplayers at Comic Con. I think they look great.
