To think DH should learn to do plaits.

When dd1 and I told DH he was getting a masterclass in plaiting hair for bed, he shrugged and said 'whatever'. He clearly doesn't want to. I suspect this is more because I told him I refuse to be responsible for keeping hair tangle-free for the next ten years.

Aibu to expect this? Is he bu to be a pissed off that I refuse to be in sole charge of something that makes life so much easier, especially for me? All the more so, since he does her bedtime every other night? And we have a younger dd too?

as I showed him he stressed how easy it all looked, the arse

Yanbu!!!

OutragedFromLeeds · 03/08/2014 19:17

YANBU, unless he has some condition affecting his motor skills that makes doing plaits difficult/impossible.

CoffeeTea103 · 03/08/2014 19:22

How old is dd1?

Applelicious · 03/08/2014 19:25

Oh, but if he becomes competent at doing girls hair, that will spoil the fun of seeing the results of ''Dad did my hair'' syndrome. T'is quite funny. Grin

SaucyJack · 03/08/2014 19:25

I have three daughters. I have never once plaited hair at bed-time. No one has died yet.

Purplepoodle · 03/08/2014 19:30

I used to have hair down top my knees as a kid and my mum never plaited it and I survived.

AnotherStitchInTime · 03/08/2014 19:33

Teach him how to put it up with a hoover that will get him interested!

No seriously YANBU he needs to know how to do the basics of care for his child's hair. While DH cannot plait like me (mixed race children, corn rows etc.), when I was in hospital for two months dd1 and dd2 still had a basic comb and single plait. I have recently encouraged him into putting it into two plaits and he managed a reasonable job.

LilyandGinger · 03/08/2014 19:36

I haven't taught my DH to plait but he does and extremely competent pony tail. It's not hard.

Applelicious · 03/08/2014 19:38

AnotherStitch mixed race children here too and, oh my goodness, when I was in hospital for a few days when my youngest was born, their hair when he brought them up to visit me... Grin Bless him, he did try but it was all very ''poofy''

fluffymouse · 03/08/2014 19:38

Yanbu, it is unfortunately something I have not been able to persuade dh to do either though.

BoneyBackJefferson · 03/08/2014 19:45

"Aibu to expect this?"

YABU to "expect" anything. Discuss, agree on, compromise YANBU

"Is he bu to be a pissed off that I refuse to be in sole charge of something that makes life so much easier, especially for me?"

If it wasn't for the last bit, he would BU.

If you are selling it to him as, "you will do this, it will make my life easier" then I am not surprised that he is none committal about it.

micah · 03/08/2014 19:47

I couldn't be arsed to plait hair before bed either. Why is it necessary?

As long as he can turn them out reasonably presented why does he need a "masterclass"?

If it's for length, is it his choice to grow it that long? If not, it's your choice and yabu. If it's his choice, you're not. If it's the child's choice, tell them they can have it that long when they can do it.

Caorunn · 03/08/2014 19:48

I'm 43 female with two DDs and can't plait hair. Eldest DD has learned via. years of riding and now does mine. Beautifully Grin

It is not a life skill. Nor actually necessary at bedtime.

HerrenaHarridan · 03/08/2014 19:50

It's a trade off innit! ;)

Are you going to fight the hair brush battle or stick sine plaits in

MammaTJ · 03/08/2014 19:56

Are you in 'Little house on the prairie'? Grin

loveableshoulder · 03/08/2014 19:59

Coffee, dd is just 5.

Saucy, we are not dead yet, but I am getting tired of dd1 screaming about having her hair brushed when we are all getting ready for work/school. DH is not around in the mornings so never sees of does this. Plaits lessen this problem.

Boney, you have a very good point. Though it also benefits dd, and I regularly do things for DH that sakes his life easier, such as make sure here is food for tea that just needs reheating when it's his turn to cook for DDs etc.

Micah, I tell dd we will have to cut her hair if she doesn't like the brushing. She wants it long.

I think I might need to choose my words more carefully. We won't be stopping the plaiting!

Thank for the food for thought, all.

Grin mamma. Dd won't let me do two plaits, though I think it's cute.

YANBU. DH can't do anything other than brush hair and it drives me crazy that I can't go to work if he's taking until the hair is done. DD1 (6.10) can now at least do a ponytail and can plait in dolls' hair so we progress but he refuses to even try to learn. There is a dad in her class that can French braid. And do ballet-ready hair. It can be done!!!!!

manchestermummy · 03/08/2014 20:05

Oh and we plait before bed too - it does help! DD1 wants to have her hair long although I think she would look fab with a bob.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 03/08/2014 20:07

In our house, no nonsense about brushing or washing hair, or it will be cut short. I mean it, and DDs know this.
DD1 just puts her hair into a low ponytail for bed. It helps a lot with tangles.

And tangletease brushes are just fantastic.

TeenAndTween · 03/08/2014 20:08

In my house the rule is they only get long hair when they are old enough to brush and wash it themselves. Has worked a treat.

MammaTJ · 03/08/2014 20:08

I am disappointed in the lack of a second plait!

LemonBreeland · 03/08/2014 20:10

My Grandad was a proper northern working class miner, but he had 3 DDs, he did amazing plaits. Your dh should just get on with it. It's nothard, and is part of your DDs bedtime routine.

loveableshoulder · 03/08/2014 20:11

I'll work on it, mamma. One girl at dd's school regularly wears four plaits at once

Manchester, thanks for posting. I was starting to think I was the only one who plaited.

Perhaps I will try just a pony tail. Thanks to those who suggested this.
