I have nothing against formula feeding (formula feed DD but having better luck breast feeding DS).
But the current SMA advert gives me such rage. It is so condescending to mums and the brief time it shows a dad being silly with his child, pulling funny faces at them and just generally being a Dad, there is a mum in the background of the shot giving him an evil glare as if he was the worst Dad in the world. Makes me so mad the stereotyping in it.

I hate all formula advertising too (and nappies). It's condescending shit and they put in the 'breast is best' bit at the beginning to satisfy the rules, then basically tell you that you should move to formula or your baby won't do the great things in the advert...

TheReal is there gin in that tea?

exbrummie · 04/08/2014 09:32

The one that annoys me is"30 years of breastmilk research" it is a meaningless statement.
It doesn't tell you what the research concluded(possibly that they will never be able to make their formula the same as breasmilk)

BalloonSlayer · 04/08/2014 09:38

The bit that gets me is the disclaimer "not intended to replace breastmilk" or whatever it says. Which is a total lie. What else is there to give a 6 month old baby? Gin?

icanmakeyouicecream · 04/08/2014 09:39

I have to turn them all over.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 04/08/2014 09:54

Why are they allowed to advertise on TV? The 'breast is best' mention at the start of every single advert really gets to me. We get it from absolutely everywhere, we know. It doesn't change anything, being told it by some faceless voice on TV.

I use Cow & Gate. I can never actually hear what they're claiming on their adverts so it may be absolute horse shit, but it's drowned out by the creepy babies laughing.

Pointlessfan · 04/08/2014 09:58

I hate all forms of marketing aimed at parent (except money off vouchers!!). It is always cynical and seems designed to make us feel guilty about something. Women are always portrayed as busy working mothers who somehow manage to juggle it all whilst rolling their eyes at their incompetent husband who has just blown up the kitchen or is in bed with man flu.
I really hate the one with all those giggling toddlers that say "do I look like I'm missing vital nutrients" or something. Again they seem to be trying to get us all to give up breastfeeding asap. I honestly don't think using formula would make my life easier in any case. I have enough to do without sterilizing bottles!!

Me23 · 04/08/2014 10:16

Another vote of hate here! Agree with previous posters it is so condescending and sexist. My OH was a SAHD for 2 years and it makes out men don't have a clue.

Also agree re aptimil ad and the dullness/misery evoked in the bf scene everything is so much brighter once she switched to formula!

JohnFarleysRuskin · 04/08/2014 10:23

Utter rage!

"Take it from us, you're doing great"
500,000 kids on the at risk register on this country, we're not all doing great, why pretend?

ArgyMargy · 04/08/2014 10:29

YABU for giving a flying fuck about adverts. For anything.

GinGinGin · 04/08/2014 10:29

I hate formula companies, let alone their advertising. I hate their unethical practices of peddling formula in 3rd world countries and I hate the patronising shite they peddle to mums in developed countries. If I had my way, formula would be free - that would stop them advertising pretty quick! Plus what is it with the price of formula - I mean how much bloody research are they doing that justifies the cost? And why is it, despite all the research, formula is still not as good as breast milk for babies? Ooh it felt good to get that rant out there!Grin

nicename · 04/08/2014 10:31

Its not nearly as bad as the nappy one - where they give a donation to c

nicename · 04/08/2014 10:33

(Bloody phone)

So the nappy ones when they give 000.1p to a baby health charity for each pack. 'Buy this, or the babies die!'. I feel guilty that we don't need to buy nappies any more.

MintyChops · 04/08/2014 10:34

Utterly fucking hate it. Patronising bastards.

Mouthfulofquiz · 04/08/2014 11:08

There should be an ad as follows:
'Doing okay at breastfeeding? you can breastfeed past six months if you feel like it. Do what you like! Sit by a wafty curtain or in a cafe or on the floor. Look like shit, or look nice. Give it a go.'

What's a shame is that apart from that advert I can't think of any time you see breastfeeding on tv. No wonder the UK has a relatively low uptake.

Mrsgrumble · 04/08/2014 14:42

I hav to luang at the breastfeeding advert too. Her blouse is immaculate and freshly pressed and clean in the middle of the day. Yeah right - that's what it's like... ?

Sizzlesthedog · 04/08/2014 15:49

All the follow on milk ads give me the rage.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 04/08/2014 16:14

pointlessfan did you did you have to remind us about "the vital nutrients" baby - that ine made me want to throw things at the TV.

Your right it's incredibly sad that the only BFing baby on our screens is only there to say, right stop BFing, your baby won't grew up if you don't stop this nonsense and stick a bottle in it's mouth right now Angry

I think if it wasn't such blatant marketing ploy by a company with really dodgy ethics, the thought behind the SMA advert would be nice. FF can make you feel like you aren't doing great; like anyone can parent your baby because you're not doing anything special, your bond won't be as good, you're not giving your baby the best, and to be told 'you're doing great' means a lot.

But as part of a marketing ploy from a company with unethical and unsafe practices in developing countries? It's patronising.

Pointlessfan · 04/08/2014 21:49

Sorry about that, Elephants. It makes me seethe every time I see it!

I don't really see why formula companies need to advertise. You either breastfeed a baby or you give it formula, it's not like there is a huge range of other things to give to a baby that parents might buy instead of formula. I suppose they have to target the breastfeeders as all the other parents are buying formula anyway so no point advertising it to them.

bearfrills · 04/08/2014 22:27

ac Thanks and hugs.

I remember a campaign on Twitter a while ago, started I think by a couple who lost their daughter to SMA, that tried to get the company to change the name of the formula. It seems really poor taste to have an infant formula with the same name as one of the leading genetic killers of babies. They made a donation to SMA research but refused to change the name of the product. I remember reading a tweet the family posted saying that every time an SMA advert came on TV or they saw SMA products while out it was like a kick "SMA is a brand of baby milk, SMA kills babies" (or words to that effect).
