Undercharged. WWYD?

OK, so what would you honestly honestly do? Not what is the right thing or what you would like to think you would do, but actually really do?

Today I bought 3 items in TK Maxx. They were all processed at the till, tags removed etc. The bill came to less than I'd expected and I assumed that something had been reduced , hooray.

When I get home I check the receipt and find that a pair of school shoes was not included on the bill. I think they were £25-ish. To go back and pay now would involve a return journey into town and parking costs. Plus Dh is facing redundancy for the second time in 3 years so we're feeling very poor.

You'd go back and pay, wouldn't you?

I think I'd ring the shop and explain.

I think we were undercharged yesterday in a garden centre, but didn't realise until I got home, and to be honest, I'm still not sure. I picked out a load of reduced plants and two that I thought were not. DH paid at the till (I'm not working at the moment so it was his treat).

When we got home with them he said something about them being a bargain - £8 for 6 plants. I thought two of them were £3 each, but it could be that they were reduced after all. So, I've not done anything!

LightastheBreeze · 31/07/2014 19:12

Yes , lucky free shoes, thats what they are, I wouldn't give it to charity either.

MorphineDreams · 31/07/2014 19:13

No I wouldn't. If it was a small corner shop or something I would though

ICanSeeTheSun · 31/07/2014 19:15

I would keep the shoes without taking them back, I would not want to get any one in trouble.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 31/07/2014 19:28

I wouldn't send my child to school in stolen shoes

rofl!!

They're not stolen shoes, the cashier didn't scan them!

If there was a roll eyes smilie I'd be using it...

I absolutely would and do treat this sort of thing as 'one of those nice lucky things that happens sometimes' like finding a tenner in the middle of the road. And it's a bit like that - I'm not about to go hand in a tenner at the police station as lost property, and considering that the shoes probably cost less than that to make I really don't see a difference.

yesyouare · 31/07/2014 19:40

i wouldnt go back and pay , their mistake , bonus for you .

Gileswithachainsaw · 31/07/2014 19:47

I'm not hoiking anything Confused

You lot do what you want that's up to you.

All I said is I wouldn't be able to use them. That's up to me surely?

HighwayDragon · 31/07/2014 19:48

I'd think 'waheey free shoes' ð??

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 31/07/2014 19:54

I'd do nothing at allSmile

lemontwist · 31/07/2014 19:57

A similar thing happened to me the other day. I had a basket full of things in Wilkos and when it had all been scanned myself I commented that it seemed very cheap. The cashier then checked through all the items & said they had all scanned correctly. When I got home & checked again I realised she had missed 3 items altogether. Like hell was I going back when I'd already pointed out the mistake once!

TheNumberfaker · 31/07/2014 20:00

What would I actually do? Not take them back as I didn't steal them or have any idea that they hadn't been rung up properly/at all. I wouldn't feel at all guilty and I'd be woohooing about it.

What is the right thing to do? Not take them back as the customer presented all items at the till. There was no deception, no act of stealing, it was a mistake on the part of the retailer. These things happen!

CaptChaos · 31/07/2014 20:01

I would and I have gone back and paid. They were most taken aback about it, but I have a planet sized guilt complex and couldn't have lived with myself.

Lagoonablue · 31/07/2014 20:04

For that amount of money would do nothing. Probably feel a bit guilty though.

marne2 · 31/07/2014 20:08

I wouldn't go back, has happened to me a few times and I felt no guilt, it's their mistake, you took the items to the till, they supposedly scanned them, they messed up and you got a free pair of shoes. Wear them and think 'these shoes were free!' Grin.

SorryForTheTypos · 31/07/2014 20:09

Keep 'em.

No way would I cop for the time, petrol & parking charges involved. I'd be so worried about getting the assistant into trouble too.

NickiFury · 31/07/2014 20:12

Haven't read the thread as wanted to answer without being swayed.

Yes I would keep them and I would not go back. Makes my day when things like that happen.

curiousgeorgie · 31/07/2014 20:13

I definitely wouldn't go back... Maybe if I had noticed while in the actual shop, but after I was out the door no way!

backwardpossom · 31/07/2014 20:15

When I worked on customer services, if someone was undercharged for something and they came back to pay, we would thank them for their honesty, tell them it was our fault for not charging the correct price and to keep the item.

I'd only go back if it were a small independent or charity shop.

Marnierose · 31/07/2014 20:23

If it was a small business I would. A big chain like to maxx I wouldn't. Especially if it's an extra expense and hassle to return to the shop

AnneElliott · 31/07/2014 20:24

I would go back if I was just outside the shop, I wouldn't do a special trip though.

I used to work for M&S and if you came back we would have let you keep it for your honesty. That didn't happen much in the area I worked in thoughShock

I got a free trampoline from Amazon and I didn't bother telling them as it was their mistake. I'd ordered it, they delivered it and then emailed to say it was out of stock and they wouldn't be charging me.

FreeLikeABird · 31/07/2014 20:26

Nope, I wouldn't go back.

Karoleann · 31/07/2014 20:27

I'd donate some money to charity instead.

Floralnomad · 31/07/2014 20:30

I wouldn't take them back ,if I noticed at the time I would definitely point it out but in the situation as described I'd just leave it .
