Undercharged. WWYD?

OK, so what would you honestly honestly do? Not what is the right thing or what you would like to think you would do, but actually really do?

Today I bought 3 items in TK Maxx. They were all processed at the till, tags removed etc. The bill came to less than I'd expected and I assumed that something had been reduced , hooray.

When I get home I check the receipt and find that a pair of school shoes was not included on the bill. I think they were £25-ish. To go back and pay now would involve a return journey into town and parking costs. Plus Dh is facing redundancy for the second time in 3 years so we're feeling very poor.

You'd go back and pay, wouldn't you?

No I definitely wouldn't go back to TKMaxx. I have however gone back to an independent shop when I was undercharged and to a local bistro. It was their error and I wouldn't be happy wasting my time and petrol on the trip.

AnAwfullyGoodOxymoron · 31/07/2014 18:49

Nope I wouldn't go back to pay.

ThatBloodyWoman · 31/07/2014 18:50

I wouldn't go back to TKMaxx, but I would to a charity shop every time.

Abra1d · 31/07/2014 18:50

WOuldn't bother going back but would probably ring them and offer them my card details.

slithytove · 31/07/2014 18:51

I wouldn't.

This happened to me in kiddicare 2 days ago.

They didn't scan a changing bag. Took the security tags off though. Mum paid and it was a big bill so we didn't notice until it came to split the receipt at home.

Hours drive so not a chance we would go back. Plus I think what they have done to their staff is disgusting.

Enjoy your free shoes.

LightastheBreeze · 31/07/2014 18:53

This happened to DH in TK Maxx also, he wasn't charged for something. The staff should pay more attention to what they are doing. I would not go back.

slithytove · 31/07/2014 18:53

And i work in retail management.

Floggingmolly · 31/07/2014 18:54

Incorrect change and having an itemised receipt showing a price different to the labelled price are two different things.

SuperScrimper · 31/07/2014 18:54

This happened to me at a restaurant recently. They only charged for part of the bill, I thought it was less than it should have been, but didn't say anything. Went outside and looked at the receipt, saw things were missing and went back in and paid for the rest.

They were shocked I'd come back! But the horrible guilt feeling wouldn't have gone away.

Haffdonga · 31/07/2014 18:56

At a very rough estimate this thread is about eight to one against paying up

You MNers are a bunch of crooked thieving vipers. S'why I love you.

Thenapoleonofcrime · 31/07/2014 18:57

If I had noticed immediately outside the shop, I'd turn around and take them back in.

Once I was home, I wouldn't spend the time and energy to return them, or the petrol.

It's not really a principle thing for me, as I wouldn't have intended up with the shoes for free, it's the hassle and expense of taking them back.

Shops are busy, mistakes are made, when I have pointed out errors in the past, they don't seem grateful so I wouldn't waste an hour or two of my time rectifying this mistake.

slithytove · 31/07/2014 18:57

You didn't intend to not pay so it's different.

I once walked out of asda not realising I had make up in the bottom of my trolley I hadn't paid for. I legged it back so quick once I got to my car and saw it under my handbag.

That was my screw up and definitely down to me to correct. I was just grateful I didn't get accused of theft.

That isn't the case when a cashier has been handed an item, detagged it, and not scanned it. unless the cashier is your mate Wink

penguinplease · 31/07/2014 18:57

I wouldn't go back.. If you're feeling the pinch with a redundancy looming maybe this is your good karma!

I wouldn't give it a second thought.

picnicbasketcase · 31/07/2014 18:58

Hell no I wouldn't go back and pay. I'd probably feel a tiny bit bad for a while, but not that bad. There is a difference between someone not scanning a tag or entering a price into a till and blatantly leaving without paying.

Andrewofgg · 31/07/2014 19:00

Send the money to a charity and forget it. That is what I have done.

RiverTam · 31/07/2014 19:00

rofl at 'I wouldn't send my child to school in stolen shoes'.

small indie - go back. Big multinational who no doubt makes a whole shed load of money in refusing returns or having dated gift vouchers etc etc - no chance!

BeanpoleSally · 31/07/2014 19:02

Another who works in retail management here, and I wouldn't bother going back. My nearest TKMAXX is flippin miles away, I would not be making a special trip. I'd view it as a lucky happening that I didn't intend and then forget about it.

No one will get in trouble and it will be a very small discrepancy in their stock take that no one will pay any attention to.

However if you are the sort of person who will feel guilty and then not use the item ever again maybe you should take it back if it's going to affect you and you're going to waste time and energy worrying about it. Or donate the shoes to a charity shop that's closer to you? They'll appreciate them and it's money to a good cause.

Haffdonga · 31/07/2014 19:02

The cashier was a bored-looking teenaged boy - a bit like my ds, actually.

OP posts:
MagicMojito · 31/07/2014 19:03

Im not going to pretend that id even have the intention to go back. I wouldn't.

Tbh even if noticed before leaving the shop, id still not go back. And it would probobly make my day!
So shoot me Grin

Haffdonga · 31/07/2014 19:04

I wont send ds to school in stolen shoes. I'll send him to school in lucky free shoes - much better karma Wink

You win some, you lose some. I'd keep them I got free cocktails once because they forgot to charge so I won.

DXBMermaid · 31/07/2014 19:04

Nope I would not go back. This is how I once ended up with a free toilet Grin

I do go back if this happens at a family business as I know it will have much more impact.

todayisnottheday · 31/07/2014 19:04

If you presented them at the till (I.e the cashier held them and put them in the bag) then no I wouldn't. You presented them, were willing and able to pay and did not realise an error had occurred until some time later. If you'd known immediately and scurried off rubbing your hands or had deliberately "accidentally" left them on the hood of the buggy or similar then it would be different. I would also expect the cashier would get in trouble if you rang them or went in.

I tend to be quite conservative about things like this but I don't see that you've done anything wrong here.

MrsSpencerReid · 31/07/2014 19:06

My partner works on customer services and if someone comes back in having had the same thing happen he thanks them for their honesty and doesn't charge them, so no, I wouldn't go back unless small I dependant shop which this is not! Smile

MagicMojito · 31/07/2014 19:08

And I wouldn't give any extra to charity Blush

(If it makes me any less awfull, I do give to charity on a regular basis)
