Surely in JULY There should be some bloody kids shorts still available to buy.

We normally buy the boys clothes online or in supermarkets to keep costs reasonable.

Today I have been to Sainsburys, Morrisons, absolutely no kids shorts.

Online I have checked H and M, tesco, Next and a few other random places, they either have nothing or there are a few very odd bits own the sale.

I just expected there to still be shorts in the hottest part of the year!!

DON'T get me started on the availability of season-appropriate clothes. It seriously hacks me off. No, I do not want to buy my kids their uniform in June, a quarter of the year before they actually need it. God knows how much growing they will do, they grow like feckin' weeds. Neither do I want to buy summer dresses at Easter when it is hailing outside. It is not crazy to buy summer clothes in the summer etc. I don't understand why shops don't sell the right clothes at the right time of the year, surely they would make more money that way? Time and time again I have walked out unable to buy what I wanted. If I went in for shorts in July, not found any, I will not go fuck it, I will have a ski jacket instead. Crazy.

And then what makes me shout at the telly is when a shop like M&S will whinge boo-hoo, our sales are down this quarter. Sell me what I want to buy!!! But what do I know, I am only a customer... Grrrrrrr.

HeeHiles · 31/07/2014 02:09

If I went in for shorts in July, not found any, I will not go fuck it, I will have a ski jacket instead.

That made me laugh!

But this pisses me off - I'm wandering down Oxford Street today wearing a white summer dress and flip flops and there is all Black woolly stuff in the shop windows!! I don't even want to think about that yet and I need more summer clothes now not April when it was freezing - All that's left is a few sale bits at the back but yuk! Sort it out shops!

I don't mind spring stuff going in early though - seeing all the lovely pastels in miserable January is nice.

HeeHiles · 31/07/2014 02:09

New laptop sorry should be bold...

Lally112 · 31/07/2014 02:46

asda had some when I was in yesterday, and sports direct always have loads.

herecomesthsun · 31/07/2014 02:58

Boden girls and boys in clearance, I get my kids a size or 2 big in the sale, the great thing about shorts is that biggish ones are wearable by kids for literally years!

MrsMook · 31/07/2014 05:00

I was once organised and bought DS's clothes in the next size ready to grow into. Unfortunately, his rate of growth slowed down, so by the time he was big enough, it was completely out of season from the one I expected. Fortunately, he slowed up so much, that it got worn the following summer and didn't go to waste.

I want to buy what I need in the appropriate season, and I'm another who won't spend money on inappropriate items, so the shop misses out on a sale completely. A lot of people won't think about needing shorts before July/August.

Bunbaker · 31/07/2014 06:39

"A lot of people won't think about needing shorts before July/August."

A lot of people clearly do otherwise the shops would still have them when you want them. I agree that it is ridiculously frustrating and the shops must lose out on sales, especially when you have growing children and you don't know what size they are going to be.

MotherOfInsomniacToddlers · 31/07/2014 06:53

As an employee that's had to say 1000 times a day "no shorts sorry we have sold out" you wouldn't believe the attitude customers give, and how rude they can be, as if I personally am responsible for the lack of shorts or am hiding them for fun!!!

ROARmeow · 31/07/2014 08:27

MotherofInsomniac (and other retail workers) any idea why it's like that? Why Head Office decides what clothes are stocked when?

I remember going into Next back in March looking for wellies for my DD as she'd outgrown her other ones. Racks and racks of sandals, jelly shoes, and pumps for girls - no boots or waterproofs to be seen.

I asked shop assistant who was lovely, said sometimes they keep stock in the stock room so it's always best to ask if you can't see something you want in the shop. She went to check for wellies, but alas, none :(

Outside it was torrential rain, localised flooding etc. But no effing waterproofs anywhere Hmm

CalamitouslyWrong · 31/07/2014 08:32

But people aren't buying all the summer stuff in February. That's why they stick it all on sale in May (when you still don't want it). Because, you see, the shops need to make room for all the coats and stuff we won't buy in July. By the time anyone wants to buy a coat, they'll have been sale racked and then moved on to make way for bikinis.

None of it makes any sense.

lljkk · 31/07/2014 09:42

This is weird because I went shopping for me (very rare event) last week and EVERYTHING was summery. Almost no long sleeves at all. I couldn't find anything I liked enough for me so spent ages looking. t wasn't looking for boys shorts, but I bet Primark has piles of them, too.

BetsyBell · 31/07/2014 10:05

My branch of primark had no shorts or swim trunks in the older boys category. Plenty for the younger boys though - pretty much the same in every shop I tried - Next had 2 pairs in an older boys size, H&M, nothing, Debenhams, nothing, BHS a couple of sale items.

But yes, even though my DSs are older, they still want easy wear, jersey style baggy shorts, not skinny fit, not denim, ideally no buttons either! They've both had shorts like that which fitted for years but they've both filled out, ready for a massive growth spurt no doubt.

I'm not looking forward to not being able to buy school uniform in August - refusing to buy in advance this time, especially as I seem to keep forgetting that my 8yo is in fact a tall 8 and not 6 (but, but, he's my baby you see, he shouldn't be allowed to keep growing Grin )

CruCru · 31/07/2014 10:33

If you have time to buy online, Muddy Puddles have some shorts reduced to £4. Frugi did have some, not sure if they still do.

queenofthemountain · 31/07/2014 10:40

It's the same ytrying to fing a winter coat in Februsary. My eldest child was born in Feb and after being told to expect a big baby he was < 6lbs!! I could only get him a second hand thick snowsuit.

msscoob · 31/07/2014 11:00

Yea I tried to buy some too the other day, nothing. It's ridiculous. I also remember trailing round an entire shopping mall looking for a thin rain coat in the spring, could I find any, no.

DialsMavis · 31/07/2014 11:04

I am having the same problem! None in store in Primark or H & M and despite living in a city I don't live near any massive supermarkets. DS is nearly 12 and quite particular ( about style rather than brand). River Island online seem to have loads that will make DS look like Joey Essex, which seems to be his aim in life Wink

ElephantsNeverForgive · 31/07/2014 11:12

Myers having small Jan/Feb winter babies was a joke. When you go looking for their first real clothes in March and April all you can find are sun dresses!

Yes it can be warm in spring, but it can also be sodding freezing.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 31/07/2014 11:16

IME babies and toddlers grow very in fits and stats if you buy them summer dresses or shorts to grow into, they suddenly grow and the dress is tight or refuse to eat and the shorts fall off.

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 31/07/2014 12:31

Yes I made the mistake of trying to buy DD a swimming costume in June last year. All the sales assistants thought I was mad. They did not get any money off me! Bought online instead.

lljkk · 31/07/2014 12:36

On back of this thread I had a long ferret thru the loft for shorts. There's Good News, Good News and Bad News.

Good 1: I found some decent shorts to send to another MNer.
Good 2: I found a load of other clothes that my youngest can wear (good to declutter the loft)
Bad: 14yo DS noticed what I was doing & started whining that he needs new clothes. (Argh)

So maybe I'll find out for myself how impossible shorts shopping is, after all. Wink

Still don't really believe it, really; I gave loads of pairs to charity shop not long ago.

hiccupgirl · 31/07/2014 12:36

I had to replace DS's wellies at the end of April after his split. I had to scour the shops to eventually get the choice of 2 pairs in Sainsburys. It was pretty wet outside still but no wellies because clearly you don't need them in April Hmm

ElephantsNeverForgive · 31/07/2014 16:41

Wellies in spring, is definitely another one. School has a spring walk, frequently very very muddy.

If it hadn't snowed, it was always a cue for DDs to declare their boots rubbed. Of course shops had just swapped to Doodles and sandals.

CheeryName · 31/07/2014 17:07

Shorts shopping is a joke. Sizes vary so much I prefer to get DC to try stuff on but this year nowhere had any boys shorts and we ended up buying online, which is a pain for returning stuff. And YES re girls micro-shorts. Luckily we have cobbled together enough decent pairs for DD, but she doesn't want tiny ones, she wants to be able to sit down without her thighs touching the seat iyswim.

Eve · 31/07/2014 17:09

not must me then!! DS wanted new shorts yesterday.. we tried everywhere! where we found some that fitted he didnt like them !

ElephantsNeverForgive · 31/07/2014 23:02

Eve, that's pretty much par for the course.

DD1 is complaining the only pair she could find ride up (she's 16, but adult shorts are equally hard to get, especially if your not a size 6. DD2 is a size 6 and she did ok in Primark)
