To lie your get a refund?

Inspired by another thread sorry.

I bought some ballet style pumps from Dorothy perkins. Wore them once, walked for literally 5 minutes in them and got 3 blisters. So I took them back to the shop, truthfully told them what had happened and they wouldn't let me have a refund. They said they couldn't as they'd been worn and couldn't be resold. Fair enough you can't sell them but I can't bloody wear them! She told me they needed 'breaking in'. They cost £20 so pretty cheap for shoes but it's a lot of money to me.

Would I be unreasonable to take them to a different branch and lie and say I haven't worn them (you can't tell by looking at them) but that I tool the labels off and realised they didn't go well with the outfit I'd planned?

I once bought some bog-standard black leather mens shoes from M&S. I wore them for a week, they cut into the back of my heels at the top, causing blisters. I don't know if they were a bad design or a badly-made pair, but shoes that are the right size shouldn't do this. I took them back to M&S and got a refund without a problem.

Viviennemary · 22/07/2014 16:09

Take them back if they look unworn. It's not quite right morally. But still.

did you wear them indoors or out? At a couple of shoe shops I have been to they actually say to you to wear them at home indoors for an hour or so and bring them back if they don't seem right; but if you wear them outdoors then I think it is not fair to try and return them just because they don't fit: it is your responsibility to try them on and wear them around indoors a bit first.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 22/07/2014 17:30

Tbh selling them on O think is worse! You know they give blisters, so why pass them on to an unexpecting buyer!

And yes, the matalan shoes were too painful to walk after much less than 5 minutes! Literally a trip to the car and I was hobbling. The shoes should be returned with an explanation why so DP can improve the design.

I'm Shock that people are saying painful shoes are part of a parcel. Would you say it about any other item you bought and it was causing you pain? And comfortable feet are so paramount, we are on them all day (stating bleeding obvious).

Flipflops7 · 22/07/2014 17:47

If you are going to ebay them be truthful and say Used, not New Without Tags.

Or wear them with socks indoors until they expand enough not to chafe.

nyzz · 22/07/2014 17:53

Yes, just do it and don't think twice about it.

amenicycinema · 22/07/2014 18:20

devere whereabouts in east london do you mean, give me a clue? i might have experienced the dp manager you are talking about!

BolshierAyraStark · 22/07/2014 18:27

No I wouldn't do this, it's just not on.

WendyBloomers · 22/07/2014 18:31

How on earth are they 'not fit for purpose' just because they don't fit your feet very well? Of course you shouldn't be able to return them, it's not the shops fault is it.

DontPutMeDownForCardio · 22/07/2014 18:37

I would take them back. How are they to know? How is it different to walking around in them in the shop?

I tried to return a pair of shoes before to DPs but they said theyd been worn outside (they hadn't) I managed to sell them to someone I knew.

maggiethemagpie · 22/07/2014 18:39

Buy off amazon in future - they'll accept any returns, once you've sent it back it's too much hassle for them to refuse it usually, I've sent loads of stuff back and never been challenged

Blueberrymuffint0p · 22/07/2014 19:12

Well I've done it, returned it to a different branch and got a full refund! I won't be buying shoes from there again and I advise you don't either-my dud ones will be back in circulation by now. I have to be honest, I don't even care-I'm sure I've bought pre worn stuff before now, what you don't know can't hurt you and they didn't break the skin so it's not much difference to wearing them around the store.

Good for you, I would have done the same.

AMillionNameChangesLater · 22/07/2014 19:24

Yhi

AMillionNameChangesLater · 22/07/2014 19:27

Whoops!

I hate this kind of thing. I would never have lied. I really wouldn't have. If they wouldn't exchange them because they have been worn outside, then that's fair enough. I wouldn't want to pay full price for something already used.

£20 is a fair amount for shoes, but I would have walked around the house in them first. The only time I don't is when they are a fiver and I don't care.

When did it become ok to lie to get what you want? (generalised you)

Blueberrymuffint0p · 22/07/2014 19:28

I said id worn them in the house and they were really uncomfortable, they couldn't have been nicer about it! (Actually wore them to walk from the car to my son's classroom and back again). What a joke not to mention a waste of my time.

OP posts:
HaroldLloyd · 22/07/2014 19:32

Just because they give you blisters does not mean that they will give someone else them, they are just either not worn in or ill fitting.

I'd try the socks at home thing, plus a plaster, I've never taken shoes back for giving me a blister and I've normally only had them once?

Saying that if your sure they are not going to be any use I would probably just try a different branch and leave the three steps outside but out, but they might be able to tell?

HaroldLloyd · 22/07/2014 19:33

Ah sorry!

Glad you got a refund.

Blueberrymuffint0p · 22/07/2014 19:33

I'd say it's ok to lie when a huge company like Dorothy perkins is taking a good customer for a ride. £20 is a lot of money to me, those shoes were to see me through the next couple of summers, I can't afford to just bin them and buy a second pair. They weren't fit for MY purpose. It wasn't a problem with the size-a 4 or a 6 would have made no difference. I've learned my lesson though, I'll definitely try shoes around the house from now on, never had to do that before.

I think you could do that as they shouldn't be that uncomfortable.
I hate lying etc but in this case I think it's ok.

ThatWasNice · 22/07/2014 19:42

Doh, I, umm, didn't RTFT Blush

Oh, the shame.

UptheChimney · 22/07/2014 19:44

YABU. Most shoes rub a bit as they're not made specifically for your feet. Have you really never had new shoes rub or cause Blisters?

And really, paying only £20 for a pair of shoes, what do you expect? Plasters are your friend.
