To expect a Nurse lead by example?

shouldacoulda · 21/07/2014 17:03

And practice what they preach.
Have just clocked the overweight nurse that did my recent health check, smoking like a chimney and munching on a chocolate bar!

This is somebody who sat there and lectured me on cutting down on carbs, eating oily fish once a week, not smoking and to drink in moderation.
It's a bit rich!

We expect fitness trainers to be fit and lead healthy lifestyles.
So, surely somebody who's job it is to advice people on healthy lifestyle choices should also be fairly fit, of a decent weight and not be puffing away like a chimney.
How can we take their advice seriously otherwise?

Or am I being unreasonable? (I know they work long hours and there's a lot of stress), but surely the ones that are doing the health checks and doling out 'healthy living advice' should be an advertisement for what they're saying?

If I worked in health care and was giving out healthy living advice to people, I would try my hardest to promote an image of health and lead by example
But that is just my view.
Obviouisly others don't agree with that.
But I don't take it personally.

I'm more disturbed that a bunch of people are obviously trying to goad me and find out my personal details.
Not sure what MN would make of that?

For asking your age? Why MNHQ will ban them all, naturally.

You must report the outrageous bastards immediately. All of them.

It is your duty.

shouldacoulda · 21/07/2014 23:28

Another example if I was giving people advice on basic hygene, I would make sure I had showered, my hair was clean and my clothes were freshly washed.
Leading by example.
It's not difficult to grasp.

If she were sitting there smoking and eating junk food while she was telling you to stop smoking and eat healthy food and was being paid for her time, then you might have an valid argument. But once she's off the clock, then she's on her own time and can do whatever she likes.

Wouldn't waste my time :) Fideline

Outrageous bastard that I am.

The fear of what might happen will surely haunt my sleep. :)

Pippioddstocking · 21/07/2014 23:30

I'm a nurse , I give out healthy living advice daily .
I'm also a size 8 non smoker who runs marathons and ultra marathons for " fun"

Guess what - my patients then choose to see my overweight colleague instead as they think " I couldn't possibly relate to their obesity and un healthiness " this is a fact as they often tell her that.

Seems you can't win

FidelineAndBombazine · 21/07/2014 23:31

It is no less than you deserve Phantom Wink

shouldacoulda · 21/07/2014 23:32

Are there some professions that have to follow a code of conduct when they're out in public?
For instance, I know that teachers are 'advised' to behave in an appropriate manner - one that won't reflect badly on their profession.
(I think Policemen are encouraged to follow it as well.)

Pippiod, that's an interesting viewpoint! You could be right that people can 'relate' more to somebody who they see is also struggling.

You are waaaaay overreacting to advice given by an HCP on weight management. I thought I was super sensitive about my weight but this takes the biscuit. Wink

settingsitting · 21/07/2014 23:37

Just to say that if you are a teenager [I suspect you are] it is best not to play this game.

shouldacoulda · 21/07/2014 23:37

FairyKing.
I'm slim and not overweight.

I've read this thread with interest.

I'm a hcp and we were told on the first week if our course that we should lead by example: specifically not smoke and not be overweight.

I think it is fair advice.

My job involves me seeing people who have destroyed their health through lifestyle choices every day (smoking, drinking, over eating) and to advice these patients to alter their lifestyles when I am incapable of doing so would be hypocritical.

This comment, out of all of the comments, could possibly make me change my pov a little bit

So, why do you care so much about what she said?! You are getting so het up over it. Move on.

Ok now you're being weird. And boring.

Have a Biscuit

Isabeller · 21/07/2014 23:45

As you are not overweight I'm a bit confused about what the advice was that you were upset by?
