To expect a Nurse lead by example?

And practice what they preach.
Have just clocked the overweight nurse that did my recent health check, smoking like a chimney and munching on a chocolate bar!

This is somebody who sat there and lectured me on cutting down on carbs, eating oily fish once a week, not smoking and to drink in moderation.
It's a bit rich!

We expect fitness trainers to be fit and lead healthy lifestyles.
So, surely somebody who's job it is to advice people on healthy lifestyle choices should also be fairly fit, of a decent weight and not be puffing away like a chimney.
How can we take their advice seriously otherwise?

Or am I being unreasonable? (I know they work long hours and there's a lot of stress), but surely the ones that are doing the health checks and doling out 'healthy living advice' should be an advertisement for what they're saying?

Still banging on about age? How old are you sittingsitting?
(you tell me yours and I'll tell you mine) Wink

Pleased to know my boring thread is still keeping you interested enough to keep commenting.

In my 50's!

settingsitting · 22/07/2014 09:20

I have worked out that you are 15

shouldacoulda · 22/07/2014 09:21

*I'm a hcp and we were told on the first week if our course that we should lead by example: specifically not smoke and not be overweight.

I think it is fair advice.

My job involves me seeing people who have destroyed their health through lifestyle choices every day (smoking, drinking, over eating) and to advice these patients to alter their lifestyles when I am incapable of doing so would be hypocritical.*

Is this true? Wouldn't this be against people's 'rights' to tell them this?
I know people have to be so careful nowadays not to offend people Confused

If that makes you happy settingsitting, you believe that bangs head against wall

I only got to page 3 and got lost in a haze of sock puppets.

Daffy123 · 22/07/2014 09:47

if it is full of sock puppets, why hasn't this thread been deleted?

shouldacoulda · 22/07/2014 10:34

I agree - wish MN would delete it. I started what I thought was a reasonable topic of conversationmore fool me (obviously not expecting everybody to agree), only to have it hijacked by people trying to trip me up and cause trouble at every turn..
So, yes - I hopw MN deletes it.

Poor you!!

Moral of this story.

If hundreds of posters diasagree with you, best to stop posting.

But you wont will you!

settingsitting · 22/07/2014 10:39

Another moral, since mumsnet are not along yet.

There are better ways in life to pass your time.
Please volunteer at something you are interested in.

shouldacoulda · 22/07/2014 10:42

Yep, above 2 posts proves my point. Will ask Mumsnet to delete it.

(Thanks to those that came up with interesting points! It's made me re-think my original topic - maybe nurses don't have to lead by example. I think they have too many stresses)

Hullo everyone,

Many thanks for your reports. Just a quick note to say we've looked in the things, and the OP will be dealt with appropriately.

Now I am going to lead by example by offering you all Cake and gin, along with peace and love.

YouTheCat · 22/07/2014 12:29

Yay gin! Grin

FidelineAndBombazine · 22/07/2014 12:31

the OP will be dealt with appropriately.

That is wonderfully sinister Kate I bet you're stroking a bit fluffy cat with your non-gin hand Smile

SauvignonBlanche · 22/07/2014 12:33

Thank you Kate, but I'm afraid I'll have to lead by example and decline both the Cake and gin on health grounds, I am a Nurse so can't be seen to partake in such things. Wink

scottishmummy · 22/07/2014 19:01

more to the point shoulda mnhq: the OP will be dealt with appropriately
i once got a mnhq telling off but it wasnt as strident as dealt with appropriately
