To have told this man his t shirt was offensive?

I have to say in general I think slogan tees are wanky on adults.

Anyway on the train today a man was standing there with a t shirt that said something along the lines of: the daily mail - like being in a mental hospital for 20 minutes.

He caught me reading it and chuckled. I said I didn't think it was funny I thought it was offensive.

I've been sectioned myself and I'll be damned if I ever read the daily mail or share it's ridiculous views.

AIBU to think if you really feel the need to share your newspaper related views via your t shirt you should keep the mentally ill and any other vulnerable person out of it?

Um, no - I understand that it's not meant to be taken literally, you see. Rather, it is making an exaggerated comparison for a didactic purpose.

Probably, but really not much to get worked up about. The world is full of casual references to madness and mental illness - they're in my own vocabulary, try as I might to avoid it. I just can't be arsed to go taking offence at things like this simply because I got seriously ill for a time.

CundtBake · 20/07/2014 22:50

I don't think it's offensive just because I was ill. It's offensive full stop.

Yes the world is full of casual references to madness and mental illness but isn't that the problem? There were times when casual racist or sexist remarks were the norm. Doesn't mean it wasn't worth doing anything about it.

People wear those type of t-shirts to be offensive so you weren't actually telling him anything he doesn't already know and rather than making him feel guilty it's probably made him feel that he accomplished his goal. People like that are real life trolls, they're just looking for a reaction, it's best to ignore them and cut off the oxygen of attention. I can understand why you were offended but I suffer from mental illness too and I am more concerned by the failings of mental health services than by some twat in a T-shirt. One threatens my life and the other doesn't. It's best to pick your battles to avoid unnecessary stress that could be harmful to your mental health.

BlinkAndMiss · 20/07/2014 22:54

It's an ignorant message to display on a t-shirt. But like some of the others have pointed out, it says more about him than it does about you and I really wouldn't waste my time trying to explain to someone who would display that slogan just exactly why it is offensive. Some people just can't be educated.

I love the traffic light system idea - that's exactly what these type of t-shirts are all about. It says more about the wearer than the person offended. At least we have a way of identifying dickheads before we have to waste our time talking to them.

UncleT · 20/07/2014 22:56

No, it's not simply resignation to pressure of numbers. It's a conscious choice to laugh at life and the incredibly tragic, beautiful, confused nuances that it brings us. I also believe that as human beings we largely have the capacity to exclude plenty of humour that doesn't agree with us, but without necessarily resorting immediately to the most empirical, extreme interpretation or distillation of it. Life's just more complicated than that.

Purpleroxy · 20/07/2014 22:57

I don't know, you're not the tshirt police and the law isn't being broken so personally I would not have said anything.

In isolation, no. Obviously. But then, given that I was commenting generally rather than applying that description to that particular observation, you probably know that quite well. The point was, of course, rather broader than you choose to represent.

gamerchick · 20/07/2014 23:01

Well its not something I would get my knickers in a twist about I know that much.

You did good op.

I like to think he got home, threw off the tshirt and thought 'I'm such a twat...well, things are going to change etc etc'

UncleT · 20/07/2014 23:05

There are many stupid t-shirts out there, many of which say things we might disagree with strongly. The plus side is though that we all get a pretty free reign in life to express ourselves, even though the thin end of that wedge may sometimes piss us off. Seriously, if we applied this level of sensitivity to all aspects of life, it would be seriously dull and we'd be the poorer for it. I guarantee you all that some of the comedy you find the most hilarious in life will offend somebody else somewhere.

UncleT · 20/07/2014 23:06

Both, really.

The daily mash was invented to ruffle feathers and offend. They would be laughing their tits off at this thread as a job well done.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 20/07/2014 23:09

Slogan Tshirts on anyone older than a toddler are rarely a good look

UncleT · 20/07/2014 23:09

It's not getting knickers in a twist. It's an understandable point of view.
