To be shocked at what I saw at a Toby Carvery?

I went to a Toby Carvery the other day. I had two types of meat, a Yorkshire pudding, veg and gravy. I had a good sized portion, ate it all and didn't feel the need to go up again. I'm quite smug that I know how much to put on my plate without wasting it.

However, I could see the gravy/sauce table from where I was sitting and saw a few very overweight young people, late teens/early 20's with 3 - yes 3 Yorkshire puddings on their plates, a mound of veg and ladling on bucketfuls of gravy.

Surely this is not normal and they were just greedy.

Shit, it's half finished. I'll take pics of my seconds.

Best all you can eat breakfast IMO is at any restaurant attached to a premier inn, £8.75 with kids eating free, full lovely continental section, juice and hot drinks included and hot stuff cooked fresh, it's lovely. Best is, kids eat free, so DH and I take the kids out for brekkie quite a lot.

WelshMaenad · 20/07/2014 14:39

I told you about the kids eat free twice, sorry. I get overexcited.

ICanSeeTheSun · 20/07/2014 14:41

Welsh you are a true inspiration, I live 10 minutes from a premiere inn, why didn't I think of that.

ICanSeeTheSun · 20/07/2014 14:44

It work out cheaper too

WelshMaenad · 20/07/2014 14:44

Crown carveries do free kids meals on Sundays too, that's where I am now. I find the quality varies by restaurant, the one in Ponty is a bit meh, but the hollybush in Whitchurch is lovely. Just paid £21 for the. 4 of us with drinks, DH has a pint of bitter. Lovely.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/07/2014 14:46

Who in their right mind only has 1 Yorkshire Pudding?

I'm pissed off now, we don't have a Tony Carvery for 22.5 miles! Shock No all you can eat breakfasts or roasts for us! Salad it is again tonight then!

gertiegusset · 20/07/2014 14:48

I'm a greedy fucker too, we all just went for a big fat greasy All day breakfast at a café, I shall need a little nap soon.

ilovesooty · 20/07/2014 14:50

Don't forget it's not called stuffing, it's seasoning now.

They aren't allowed to ask you if you'd like stuffing... Grin

Op I worked in one many moons ago. You wanna be there on voucher day. People used to bring their own Tupperware. Lots of Toby snobbery on this thread. It's nice home cooked food. The joints of meat and vegetables come from local companies. The yorkshires are made from scratch. Anyway my nearest one is rammed at all times. Snobs be damned. Oh and I'm fat. Fat and working in Toby? Yikes. :o

ScrambledEggAndToast · 20/07/2014 15:00

I get what you are saying OP but sadly this isn't news. I went to an all you can eat breakfast place recently and there was a guy next to me with a pile of food on his plate akin to Mount Everest. There is just no need to take so much in one go best to go up more than once rather than risk wasting stuff.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/07/2014 15:00

My 14.6yo DS had FIVE yorkies once.
He asked nicely, they gave them (not all at one time, he went back up)

He has a BMI of 16 (7st7lb 5'8") so meh.

Lucyccfc · 20/07/2014 15:02

Who cares what other people have on their plates!

I don't, I just concentrate on what I am having and if other people want to over-eat and pile their plate high and be fat, then leave them to it.

HoneyDragon · 20/07/2014 15:13

I'm officially nots for cooking a roast today

HoneyDragon · 20/07/2014 15:13

Nuts

Groovee · 20/07/2014 15:14

I went to the crown carvery and this bloke in front of me demanded 6 yorkies. Was slagging him off to dh when I got back to the table with my plate. Then the bloke passed our table and stopped and greeting dh. Turns out the gofor at dh's work was this bloke!

Was it not Victoria Beckham who had a tantrum because they didn't give her a lot of meat?

I have recently seen lots of people going up for more veggies after they finish their carvery recently. Would you have been shocked at that!

ICanSeeTheSun · 20/07/2014 15:17

I don't rate deck cavery though.

ProtegeMoi · 20/07/2014 15:22

Well thanks to this thread I have managed to find a local crown carvery where kids eat free on a Sunday! That's the 4 of us going for tea later and I will be sure to build a towering pile of Yorkshire puddings :)

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 20/07/2014 15:40

I read half this thread earlier and then went out to buy milk, eggs and cauliflower so that I can make Yorkshires and cauliflower cheese to go with the roast I too am foolhardily making in this weather. The walk to the shop in no way compensated for the amount of Yorkshires I intend to consume. Please no one post about any other delicious foodstuffs, I am way too easily influenced...

pommedeterre · 20/07/2014 15:42

Self service often seems to make people do this, value for money thing I guess. Not new or shocking!
