why can't I buy hairclips with pirates, diggers or space rockets on?

I can't find any non girly hairclips for dd. Sure I can get plain colours or gingham but in Clare's accessories there were 4 types of unicorn and no vehicles. Is my 3yo dd unreasonable wanting fast, heavy and dangerous stuff on her hair accessories and should she just crop her hair or put up with pink ponies and flowers.

It's supply and demand isn't it?

There are plenty of things we might want on a hairclip that isn't available.

You could always contact customer services and suggest it.

Why is a truck better than a flower?

I get that she likes trucks, and I agree with you that there should be a range of designs available- but I take issue with the implication that trucks are worthy and pink ponies are not.

I think the only reason trucks etc. are thought of more highly is that they are traditionally associated with boys.

DragonMamma · 19/07/2014 16:40

Not unreasonable but it's a simple supply and demand issue. I doubt there's as big a market for those types of clips compared to bows etc.

A quick search on Folksy and Etsy found a few clips in those themes. You'll be able to get them from somewhere.

RoseberryTopping · 19/07/2014 16:40

Why not make your own? It's easy enough.

VashtaNerada · 19/07/2014 16:41

YANBU. Such limited options for girls. (Equally, try finding a unicorn on an item of clothing for boys!)

HermioneWeasley · 19/07/2014 16:43

I got done great dinosaur ones on etsy. I agree, trying to find anything that's not excessively girlie is a challenge. Trucks aren't better than flowers, but it is better to give girls a broad range of interests and how they define themselves, rather than the emphasis on being pretty and decorative

Cluelessat30 · 19/07/2014 16:43

Why won't Clarks make dinosaur shoes in any other colour than brown or yuk blue? My daughter finds those colours boring but loves dinosaurs.

DrJuno · 19/07/2014 16:46

How is a girl going to get a "broad range of interests" from a hair clip?

Hair clips are for clipping hair, not providing a broad base of non gender stereotyped interests and hobbies...

SiennaBlake · 19/07/2014 16:53

Claire's? Selling mainly pink things?! Oh my lord, who would've thought it!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 19/07/2014 16:55

There are loads of pirate clips on etsy:

Go to your local haberdashery and buy some buttons, we sell trains, diggers, planes, footballs, flowers and we have customers buy 2, snip the back off and glue them too the clips, loads cheaper than buying then ready done.

Nocturne123 · 19/07/2014 16:58

I got great skull and crossbones ones from eBay !

Cluelessat30 · 19/07/2014 16:59

Thought I'd link as these are too good not to share..

Take that Clarks

overslept · 19/07/2014 17:04

I bet it would be possible to make some using that femo stuff and some plain/basic hair clips and a bit of glue. Then you could have any design you like. Make sure it doesn't come out as a "nailed it" though Grin

CalpolOnToast · 19/07/2014 17:37

If I'd had a little girl I'd have made her twirly dresses with dinosaurs and robots on, I'd have been delighted with that when I was small. Am looking at these hair slips for myself but I'm worried about looking like a children's entertainer!

LastTango · 19/07/2014 17:41

Buy plain ones and paint them yourself?

tethersend · 19/07/2014 17:45

"Trucks aren't better than flowers, but it is better to give girls a broad range of interests and how they define themselves, rather than the emphasis on being pretty and decorative"

It's the hair clips which are decorative, not the unicorns.

Clips with trucks on are still emphasising being pretty and decorative.

tethersend · 19/07/2014 17:46

Unless trucks are somehow more serious and weighty because they are associated with boys than unicorns?

BoneyBackJefferson · 19/07/2014 17:59

make some out of fimo.

EvilStepMam · 19/07/2014 18:06

any good?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/07/2014 18:15

Well, having long hair is only generally for decorative rather than practical reasons, so it's just an extension of that really whether it is a bow or a tractor. We quickly learnt to steer away from the ones with things attached as they are heavier and fall out or get caught on things more easily.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/07/2014 18:19

Never forget that a unicorn is a strong, fast, agile animal with a dirty great horn on the front. Not a bad animal for girls to like in my book.

Joysmum · 19/07/2014 18:24

Because there's not as much demand. It's a brave thing to go into a niche market without the economies of scale achievable on higher demand items.
