to wear a white dress to a wedding?

Sorry, another dilemma pre wedding this weekend. Just discovered mildew in my cupboard(100 year old house) and a couple of my dresses are wrecked. Also 7months post baby and not quite down to size. The only dresses that fit and look any good are a white/cream calvin Klein one, with black large diamond at waist, which is a shift dress of the smart office variety, or a cream floaty number. Neither look anything like a wedding dress, but wibu to wear white to a wedding?

No - don't do it.

Downamongtherednecks · 17/07/2014 12:22

Just not done. Very bad form.

rose202 · 17/07/2014 12:24

No to the cream floaty one, it will make you a guestzilla & will not be forgotten! That one shouldn't be considered at all!

I suppose you could do the CK one but you would have to accessorize it very carefully. Very carefully indeed.

I'm of the opinion that no guest should wear white to a wedding, why not just nip to New Look or similar & get a cheap one? Plus if your uncomfy then a smart shift won't make you feel good all day, you might be better in a floaty light one that isn't as constricting.

MrsBungle · 17/07/2014 12:28

No definitely not

happyyonisleepyyoni · 17/07/2014 12:32

Have you tried washing or dry cleaning your other dresses?

Sunlight will bleach out stains so I'd try a handwash and then line dry, you have nothing to lose.

bedraggledmumoftwo · 17/07/2014 12:35

Wow overwhelmingly no, then the floaty one is definitely out. Am going to try and upload a pic of the black and white one...

I am going to go against the flow, and say the floaty one would be fine, if you could accessorize it with a wrap/jacket/cardigan in a bright colour.

firstchoice · 17/07/2014 12:38

It's a nice dress.
But I still wouldn't as it is mostly creamy white (hard to tell on screen, only you can see how actually 'white' it is)?

FatalCabbage · 17/07/2014 12:38

Oh dear non. I had imagined more black. Also, you'll be hideously hot.

Are you on FB? Appeal in a status for a borrow, citing mildew and maternity leave poverty. Party and formal dresses don't get enough wear so people are often glad to lend.

Thurlow · 17/07/2014 12:41

I would. That's a nice dress. I imagine the not wearing white actually means 'don't wear a dress that could be mistaken for a wedding dress'.

There were several people wearing dresses like that at the formal wedding I went to this weekend.

Jackie0 · 17/07/2014 12:42

The picture confirms that's it completely inappropriate . Sorry Op, I get the impression you're clutching at straws here.
Get something dry cleaned, borrow something or buy a cheap colourful maxi dress from new look.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 17/07/2014 12:43

A lot of the female guests at my wedding wore white linen shift dresses - they were very in at the time.

I don't get the whole don't wear white to a wedding thing. It would never have upset me for a moment when I got married.

littlepeas · 17/07/2014 12:44

Don't do it. Two people wore white to my wedding and I didn't notice until I saw the photos weeks later (and didn't care). BUT I know my sister and cousin had a good bitch about it on the day, and quite possibly others did too. Somebody is sure to disapprove, even if it isn't the bride.

Bankholidaybaby · 17/07/2014 12:46

No way! There was a woman at my wedding who wore a white jacket over a white and blue skirt, and relatives still bitch about it ten years on (it didn't bother me in the slightest). I also attended a wedding recently where one poor guest had inadvertently dressed in the same colour, length and material as the bridesmaids. She was discussed all day. Seriously, don't wear white or cream unless you're the bride or you have rhino hide and won't care about the gossip.

LastTango · 17/07/2014 12:46

Nope, sorry.

MrsKoala · 17/07/2014 12:47

Nope - sorry. For either/both.

VenusDeWillendorf · 17/07/2014 12:54

If you accessorise with coloured shoes, bag, jewellery and hat with bright / jacket pashmina I think you'll be fine.

Tbh, no one really looks at the guests and if anyone says anything just comment on how wonderful and beautiful the bride is, yadda yadda yadda.

If anyone has any bitchy remark to make about you that you hear later, just smile and repeat that the bride looks wonderful.

I agree with Thurlo, just don't wear a big, white bridal style meringue dress!

Whatever you do enjoy the day!!

SmileAndNod · 17/07/2014 12:55

The dress you've linked to looks nothing like a wedding dress imo so I'm going to go against the majority and day I think it's ok to wear that - accessorized with lots of black maybe.

But then I've worn black and white to two weddings, and black and pink to another so what do I know?!

I think the dress in the photo would be fine if accessorised with black as someone else suggested. But I don't know UK wedding etiquette!

chocolatemademefat · 17/07/2014 13:03

dye the cream one.

FriendlyLadybird · 17/07/2014 13:03

The dress in the picture will be fine. Can't comment on the cream floaty one but it would probably be OK if you accessorised it in a very non-bridal way.

I once wore a cream shirt-waister with brown accessories to a wedding. Maybe people bitched but I didn't notice. I couldn't possibly have been thought to be trying to upstage the bride, who was in a pure white, full-skirted number.

At my brother's wedding, anyone could have worn white as the bride wore red.

Bowlersarm · 17/07/2014 13:06

That's a nice dress OP, but I still don't think I would. I'd feel too self conscious.

firstchoice · 17/07/2014 13:06

I wore a white linen shift to a wedding (out of ignorance)
Simply enormous black hat and black jacket (kept on) and accessories.
Still,
someone called me on it and I was mortified.
not worth it, honestly!
