AIBU re dd @ sleepover- parent smoking indoors

Ds recently went to a sleepover. I have just had to wash a big bag full of clean clothes as they stink of smoke.

AIBU to think that if unworn clothes in an overnight bag smell, then there must have been smoking indoors and not just in garden?

AIBU to be shocked that these educated, professional people smoke in front of their own dc and also guest dc? I just that that was a definite no no these days. Surely everyone knows about passive smoking?!

AIBU to prevent ds going there again. I feel so sorry for his friend :(

Am I overreacting?

I wouldn't rule against the idea of DS smoking at 11... I started when I was 9, I came from a very naice family, we pinched some of my friends parents ciggies at a sleepover...

Smoking at 9. That's shocking.

AnyoneForTennis - are you bringing Rolf Harris into a thread where the OP is worried about her DS and passive smoking? Confused

And yes, to me you do sound a bit paranoid. Do you ensure the father/uncle/grandfather of your dc are never left alone with them, as they're just as likely to abuse them as their friend's dad is?

She is, Margot. Rolf Harris is the new Madeline McCann.

My DF smoked and my In Laws were chain smokers and both my DH and myself have never smoked. Nor have we - up until now suffered any ill effects from passive smoking. That doesn't make it okay for people doing it now especially with children in the house but if you want your DS to join in with things like sleepovers you may have to put up with it. I'd suggest future sleepovers happen at your house.

Hadn't you noticed the smell of smoke from your son's friend before? If the bag of clothes was so bad after one night I'd expect everything and everyone in the house would carry the smell around with them.

My DM was a chain smoker, both me and DSis have asthma, i have hay fever, we both have hypothyroidism, i have pcos. And we both have fertility issues.
She smoked while pg with us.
Who knows what harm the passive smoking did us.
We would not be visiting/ staying over with DC if she still smoked.
But im unsure about sleepovers with friends.
I am genuinely more concerned over any possible abuse.
Im sure i never went till i was a teenager

Sorry to pick this up some 4 years on but I too was a child when my parents smoked indoors and did not have an issue with it. Obviously because at that time your body would not feel the effects directly but there is no way my parents or anyone would be allowed to smoke in my presence as I cannot stand the smell more than anything especially when it lingers on clothing. My body reacts terribly to it, I get a runny nose and within minutes I have a condition that lasts weeks. Why should I go through this illness because of a dirty habit that unfortunately has been marketed by the government because it relaxes weak willed people directly through stress and makes the government wads of money as a result. Be thankful I am not in control of the world or indeed a God. I would wipe smoking, Cigarettes, spliff and any type of smelly noxious habit off the face of the earth. I know I would be hated for it, but the world would be better for it!
