To despair at dog owners

Aaaaaaaaaaarg. Grrrrrr. Angry

I was sitting with dh and dc in the park sharing a pizza between us which we had got from a nearby restaurant. Suddenly dh leaps up and grabs a dog that was about to jump on us whilst we were sat on the ground eating our food. He had to hold on to the dog until it's owner a stupid fuckwitt cunt woman came (about a minute later). The woman made no serious attempt to call her blood pet (massive in size, some sort of mutt). She just meekly called whispered "emmieeeeee, eeeeeeemmiee" but unsurprisingly stupid dog didn't listen to fuckwitt woman at all.

She then proceeded to tell us the classic line "he's harmless" to which I responded "well I still don't want him jumping on me, the dc or our food.

She had the bloody cheek to answer back "the park is for everyone and that we should get used to dogs". I said "sure, i'lm used to dogs but still don't want one humping me, the baby or slobbering my food".

She went on to say some more tosh and I warned her that I would call the police as it was clear that she couldn't control her bloody dog.

She went off in a huff but not without lecturing me that I should not be rude to her in front of the dc.

Seriously, how can some dog owners be sooooooo blooooody stupid? I don't get it. I love dogs, hope to have our own dog one day but I will make damn sure to train the dog and not allow it to bother other people.

If you don't like dogs goin near your child don't give them food and sit them on the ground Really? Just proves OPs point about some people thinking their dog takes priority over other people

Donnadoon · 06/07/2014 21:10

Yawn
OP sorry you met an arsehole today
I met one in the supermarket, no dogs in sight.

Staywithme · 06/07/2014 21:11

Yawn. Here we go again.

affafantoosh · 06/07/2014 21:13

Hey, at least it didn't shit on your picnic!

dilys4trevor · 06/07/2014 21:13

I entirely agree. Something similar happened to me about 2 years ago. DC and I were having a picnic on a rug in a park. Two dogs came over and started trying to eat the food. They were big (Springers, I think) and boisterous, stepping in the food and slobbering and trampling over kids' legs etc). I tried to shoo them away. Only person nearby was a woman paying no attention at all (but looking in our general direction) chit-chatting on her phone. I thought 'the dogs can't be hers or she'd be calling them away.' I cast around and for an owner and by now the kids were upset and we were hurriedly packing up. Eventually she called to one of the dogs and I realised they were hers. But she had let it carry on in full view of her for at least a minute. Whilst chatting on the phone. I was livid and called out to her to control her dogs and have some consideration. I used the word 'bloody' ('bloody consideration') but wanted to call her a right cunt. But didn't. She then broke off (annoyed) from her phone call to say that I had a terrible attitude and shouldn't behave like that on front of my children ( I am guessing she meant by semi-swearing, but she may have meant by over-reacting to the situation. Which I wasn't). She then returned to her phone call, called her dogs away and walked off, muttering to the person on the other end of the phone about 'some people.'

I know that parks are for everyone and know even well trained dogs can behave like that sometimes. It was more the attitude of the owner I was angry with. Just letting it happen and not even breaking away from her phonecall.

When you have an unbelievable, quite upsetting experience with a knobend, you do tend to vent without qualification. Don't blame OP. Though obviously, there are plenty of responsible dog owners out there. Glad to say I haven't had anything like the same experience since.

ThrowAChickenInTheAir · 06/07/2014 21:13

'Soon as the good weather happens people bring their children and food and assume they can just plonk themselves anywhere and do what they like.' Er yes. And I expect dog owners to control their dogs around that scenario too.

Nohootingchickenssleeping · 06/07/2014 21:13

My God. As a dog owner, everytime these treads pop up I want to say "THIS OWNER DOES NOT REPRESENT US."

YADNBU.

Owner of a big jumpy dog mutt dog here. He seems to be magnetically attracted to people sitting down in the park. I pre-empt and call him back to be put on the lead before he even thinks about it. It's just polite!

fluffymouse · 06/07/2014 21:14

Yay another dog slating thread.

It sounds like the dog was harmless, but just wanted a bit of food.

Yabu to have reacted like that, and for the thread title.

The park is for use by all people, including dog owners.

coffeeinbed · 06/07/2014 21:14

My dog is lovely.

Just saying.

TerrifiedMothertobe · 06/07/2014 21:15

Some dog owners are. A dog came running into our garden this afternoon chasing our cat. Lucky the boys were inside, as 2 minutes before hand our baby was crawling around the lawn.

The owner apologised, but I despair as to why this dog wasn't on a lead.

Also, someone else left dog poo by our front door.

Village live, lovely.

Staywithme · 06/07/2014 21:16

My neighbours are arse holes and their kids are rude and the youngest is aggressive. They don't have dog though, odd that. Confused

affafantoosh · 06/07/2014 21:16

Here you go - enjoy :)

dilys4trevor · 06/07/2014 21:17

Soon as the good weather happens people bring their children and food and assume they can just plonk themselves anywhere and do what they like.

So, you have more ownership over your local park somehow because you use it in ALL WEATHERS.

Ok, sounds fair.

Yes, they CAN plonk themselves down and do what they like! Are you for real?

BoiledPiss · 06/07/2014 21:18

I would like to advise every person on this thread to read the thread in classics titled 'a dog shat on my picnic'

That is the far funnier version of this thread! Grin

passmethewineplease · 06/07/2014 21:19

YANBU to be annoyed at the dog owner you encountered today.

Plenty of good dog owners though so YABU to despair at them..

BoiledPiss · 06/07/2014 21:20

No way! Xpost affaf!!

There was a fair-weather user woman with a little girl in my local park the other day. Never seen her there before.
Plonked right in the middle with a picnic.

I kept my dog away, but she could have shown some consideration and not nave taken up all the space herself.

Works both ways.

mercifulgibbon · 06/07/2014 21:23

If you can't control your dog, it shouldn't be off the lead. I've had a dog do this to me (no food or picnics involved) and the woman was just so wet about it. The dog was jumping up and snapping at me (probably playfully but I was frightened because it was so big) and i couldn't get away from it. The woman was just saying meekly "come here dogs name come here" again and again and it took me shouting "will you get it the fuck off me?" before she came and pulled it away. She did the thing of commenting about how I didn't need to be so rude but I evidently did since she didn't make a move to get the dog away until then even though it was obvious I wanted it away.

I wish people would remember however much they love their dog and however harmless they think it is and however much the park is for everyone, that doesn't mean people should put up with random dogs jumping all over them.

I'm glad though that there seem to be a million more thoughtful dog owners and so many who are kind enough to stop with their dogs to let dd have a good look when she starts shouting "doggy, doggy!".

Can I caution your DH against grabbing strange dogs? (I mean that nicely and am semi joking, I'm sure he doesn't make a habit of it!). :)

Some dogs wouldn't take too kindly to being "grabbed" or restrained by complete strangers. Your story could have been far worse than 'a dog nearly ate my pizza' and it's not a practice you want your DC to see and copy.

That dog owner was a prat. Most are perfectly reasonable. YANBU reasonable about that one but YABU to generalise (but I think you have that message now!).

lampygirl · 06/07/2014 21:43

We have a field near us, pretty much only ever used by dog walkers and occasionally one of those new tangled outdoor fitness groups. I'd hate there to be a blanket ban on all dogs having to be on a lead.

In all fairness we try to be considerate by going out as a big group at 8am on a Sunday morning but we are a big group of big dog owners. They are big so of course they have been trained, recall and sit on a whistle for many. I have a Bernese and she is one of the smallest.

We try to avoid peak picnic times, to be fair it is too hot for the dogs at midday, but it does work both ways. If I have to walk my dog there at lunchtime (the days I work and come home) I would like it if the picnic crowd could keep their children off my dog. She is friendly and a real people dog, but she doesn't like being approached when on lead by a gaggle of cooing toddlers and probably will bark. At this point over runs irate parent telling me I have a dangerous dog... She's on a lead and your kid is poking her eyes. It's rare but it does happen. There are twats, Independent of their pet owning status

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/07/2014 21:48

Yanbu. She was an arse.

We're not all like that though, dog owners. Even a dog with the best recall can struggle on a day when lots of people are picnicking in the parks. Like today for example, so my dogs stayed on lead whilst near people. They enjoyed their walk and other people got to enjoy their food.

I would be furious in your position too. Being a dog owner doesn't make me think more kindly of the entitled, ineffectual arses who also unfortunately own dogs.
