To serve guests instant coffee

DH and I aren't really coffee drinkers (prefer tea)so we just have a jar of instant coffee such as Nescafé. No real ground coffee.

Are we being unreasonable not to have 'proper' coffee in for guests?

YANBU. I don't drink coffee. If DH wants to make the fancy stuff for people who do, that's fine, but if it's only me around, instant it is.

Don't serve it without telling them - it's fine to not have it but don't serve it to me pretending it's coffee.

OK, not really, I wouldn't expect real coffee in anyone elses house. But you'd have to steel yourself whilst I tried to explain why I wouldn't drink the baby murderer's crap stuff you would offer me.

I usually stick to cold drinks in other people's houses - I don't drink normal tea either

Um??I wouldn't be able to drink it. Only drink proper coffee and can instantly tell the difference.

Yes I would normally say we only have instant coffee before serving it. We always have tea and a good selection of cold drinks

YANBU. I'm a big coffee drinker bit I wouldn't get offended if I was given instant coffee. Its not like they are paying for it.

YANBU as long as you are clear that when you offer coffee to guests,this is what they'll get. Im a big coffee drinker, but I won't touch instant, and would choose a cup of tea given the choice. I hate being offered tea or coffee, only to choose coffee and end up with a cup of Nescafé! But there is no way to ask about the quality of the coffee beforehand without looking like an absolute snob!

I don't expect to be offered coffee at someone's house, I certainly don't expect anyone to buy anything in specially. But I'd be slightly disappointed to be served instant if I was offered a coffee, I'd like to know that was what was on offer, so I could choose tea instead.

Its fine if you say "do you want a cup of coffee, we only have instant". There are plenty of people who like instant coffee, including those like me who love instant coffee and love ground coffee too. But I do appreciate a slightly poncier instant (such as Carte Noire) rather than bog standard Nescaff.

I wouldn't think about it, would give instant. All my friends and family would give instant too though so it wouldn't be a problem.

YABU. If you're going to the trouble of making a good meal then it should be finished with decent coffee, if you're going to offer it. If it's a money issue however YANBU.

It's your house, you have what you like available in it! But if you offer a coffee, I would stipulate that it's instant so people can choose between that or a cup of tea. I don't actually mind instant, but view it as a whole other drink to actual coffee, so might well take you up on it, or might also choose tea - but I'd like to know.

Can you still get those little coffee pouches that you sit over a mug and pour the hot water through? You could just have a few of those in the cupboard in case of visitors wanting coffee...

I mean it's still coffee it's not like I'm going to give them donkey piss instead.

I am always grateful to be accommodated in someone's home and wouldn't dream at turning my nose up if they only had instant.

*Disclaimer I would however pull a face should I be offered donkey piss.

When did instant stop being coffee? I'm sure when I was growing up everyone just had instant, if they offered you a coffee it was just presumed it was instant.
I think YANBU op as I only ever have instant in, and I still refer to it as coffee when I offer it, because, err, that's what it is!

Please don't offer instant. It's horrible and isn't remotely like coffee. Get some of those plastic all-in-one filter things that'll make a weak but real coffee, at the very least.

This thread is hilarious! I cba to check exact figures, but the vast, vast majority of coffee sold in the uk (by volume) is instant - it is the de facto position.

So apologising in advance that you 'only have instant' ? No need.
And those who could not suffer to drink instant if given it unadvised by some barbarian? Bloody snobs!

As long as you tell them it is instant- in that case I would have tea instead.
