To serve guests instant coffee

Drinkingpimmsinmygarden · 06/07/2014 17:57

DH and I aren't really coffee drinkers (prefer tea)so we just have a jar of instant coffee such as Nescafé. No real ground coffee.

Are we being unreasonable not to have 'proper' coffee in for guests?

Ooh, is te coffee snobbery going to be positioned as just having good taste?!

TheSpottedZebra · 06/07/2014 18:49

moral high ground somewhat eroded by my inability to spell 'the'

SaucyJack · 06/07/2014 18:50

Am I missing the joke? I have never EVER been offered "real" coffee in anybody's house. Ever.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/07/2014 18:50

I'd assume I was getting instant TBH, I'll drink either and so will most people I know. I have a machine, so we do serve real but wouldn't bat an eyelid if anyone served instant (we always keep it in as well).

We have a tassimo Confused won't be going out and buying ground coffee and a cafetiere any time soon.

What with that and not having guest sanpro, I must be a pretty shitty hostess Grin

TheSpottedZebra · 06/07/2014 18:51

SaucyJack - then you and your cohorts are either plebs, or so refined as to simply not countenance the horror of 'fake coffee'

But which is it??

motleymop · 06/07/2014 18:51

a cafetiere for one cup of coffee would be a right old faff

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 06/07/2014 18:52

lol "guest sanpro" I fall down on that one as well

settingsitting · 06/07/2014 18:53

I do own up to having bad taste.
I could never be employed as a chef for example, as I can rarely tell good quality food from the bad tbh.

BettyBolognese · 06/07/2014 18:54

I am a big coffee drinker and have 3 Blush different coffee machines and 2 cafetieres and an espresso kettle. I still drink instant. Wherever I go friends offer me coffee and give me instant. It really doesn't bother me. However I have to say IMO Nescafé make appalling instant. I prefer Kenco Really Rich personally.

Nomama · 06/07/2014 18:54

Ye gods!

I have just realised that if we had visitors I couldn't offer normal coffee or tea. We don't have any of either.

No wonder I am a social pariah!

WeAllHaveWings · 06/07/2014 18:55

The only people I know with real coffee machines have been given them as (unwanted) presents. dmum/ddad for example, given one at Xmas from BIL and they only ever use it when he visits as everyone else does instant. Its a big palaver getting it out the box when they know he's coming, they never manage to get the milk to froth right, then its cleaned and put away again. BIL insist the coffee is much fresher and better, what he doesn't know is the coffee he's drinking has been sitting on a self in mums cupboard for the last 2 years as no one else touches it :)

the cleaning makes them just like deep fat fryers imo, make better chips but not worth the hassle.

motherinferior · 06/07/2014 18:56

You can get a cafetiere for ÂŁ5.99 from Argos. I just looked. Hardly a preserve of high-falutin' high prices. A decent bag of fair trade ground will set you back a couple of quid.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/07/2014 18:56

No to guest sanpro here too, but they're welcome to help themselves to mine, it's in the vanity unit (only one loo in our house). There's also a toilet brush

cardibach · 06/07/2014 18:57

I use a cafetiere for one - no more faff than instant - spoon in coffee, add water, butter toast, plunge, pour. I drink both real and instant so it isn't a snobbery thing but they are two different drinks. I do like to know which to expect! After a meal I would always be expecting real, and might choose tea rather than instant.

hackmum · 06/07/2014 18:57

YABU. Instant is disgusting.

HTH. Smile

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 06/07/2014 18:58

So you just use regular ground coffee (the kind you use in coffee makers) in a cafetiere as well?

motherinferior · 06/07/2014 18:58

Fwiw I use a stovetop espresso maker too. I really resent this implication that preferring coffee over fake coffee makes me Hyacinth Bucket.

motherinferior · 06/07/2014 18:59

Yep - pref coarsely ground but not essential.

motleymop · 06/07/2014 18:59

Cleaning the cafetiere with all the bits is the faff of the operation! And if OP doesn't drink coffee, what's she going to do with the rest of the packet of ground coffee - not sure how long it keeps in the freezer but it's not as easy to keep as instant.

Nomama · 06/07/2014 19:01

Would I get totally wiped out if I said that I hate the coffee in those bloody machines too? Mainly cos it's usually Nestle! But I could be wrong, not having tried coffee from them all Smile

I have a lovely catetiere and cups set, but don't like that either. Far to much faff and the coffee isn't string enough. It's free to a good home.....

We just have a ÂŁ6 stovetop mokka and the ground coffee for it is no more expensive than instant, I think. It takes a couple minutes to make, most of that is waiting for it to shut up, and that takes no longer than boiling a kettle.

motherinferior · 06/07/2014 19:01

They don't take that much cleaning - certainly if you're as slatternly as I am. I'd assume sealed/frozen coffee will keep a long time - you can probably use from frozen too.

motherinferior · 06/07/2014 19:02

Nomama, my BIL gave me a one-cup espresso maker years ago. It's fab.Grin

Nomama · 06/07/2014 19:04

Be totally honest, motherinferior, your mokka takes no cleaning at all. That's called well seasoned Smile

And yes, you can use from frozen. We keep the stuff that gets bought for us in the freezer. Ground or beans, no problem at all.
