To serve guests instant coffee

DH and I aren't really coffee drinkers (prefer tea)so we just have a jar of instant coffee such as Nescafé. No real ground coffee.

Are we being unreasonable not to have 'proper' coffee in for guests?

A one cup filter thing is easy to rinse out and you can use kitchen roll rather than the filter papers - classy. You can pick them up easily and cheaply in a French supermarket that bit is just for mn

Stovetop espresso things are very good, it's true. The best IMO. I haven't used mine for years as had trouble with the rings on top of gas hob but now I have an induction hob I can put it into service again.

Instant and ground coffee are definitely two different drinks but I like both.

I don't like instant so would prefer tea. Dm as she gets more bonkers older has taken a real dislike to various batshit random things including coffee. Anyone who likes these things (that she previously loved) is the odd one. So she still does things like this:

Me: ie got a few bits for the holiday, some salt
Dm: oh we don't eat salt!
Me: a bit of pepper and some oil
Dm: I only use extra virgin olive oil
Me: well this is for cooking so it's vegetable
Dm: I'll bring extra virgin any way. And some vinegar.
Me: ok, and I've got stock cubes and some fresh herbs but not tea because you said you'd bring that. I've got a packet of coffee and some filters...
Dm: oh don't worry I've got coffee.
Me: you have? But you don't drink coffee Confused Erm, what sort of coffee is it?
Dm: it's the jar we have in the back of the cupboard
Me: I'll bring the coffee then. The real stuff because we'll be on holiday so we'll have time to give it two minutes to filter FFS you nutter and I know dad likes real coffee not that he's ever allowed it!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/07/2014 19:07

I like both too, it's similar to oven chips vs chip shop chips, very different but I like both.

Flipflops7 · 06/07/2014 19:09

I can't remember the last time I was offered instant by anyone younger than 80. Pref would be tea if instant was the only thing on offer. I'd rather drink what I was given than leave it untouched.

MissDuke · 06/07/2014 19:10

Oh god, I feel like even more of a crappy hostess now! I rarely have biscuits in, never mind actual real coffee! Hubby is a big coffee drinker, but usually has instant. I just buy whatever is on offer, or supermarket own brand. I guess the majority on this thread are glad they don't come and visit me Grin

SandorClegane · 06/07/2014 19:12

Do you st

SandorClegane · 06/07/2014 19:13

Ahem.

Do you still get tea granules? They were a pointless abomination.

SandorClegane · 06/07/2014 19:14

We have a filter machine at home but I don't mind instant, it's a different drink though and I don't know many people that wouldn't mention it if they only had instant.

sashh · 06/07/2014 19:18

I mean it's still coffee it's not like I'm going to give them donkey piss instead.

Donkey piss would probably taste better to be honest.

I drink tea at other people's houses, or water.

I like tea too, but I like Earl Grey, so I have very cheap and nasty tea bags in for my mother guests who prefer something else.

KiaOraOAotearoa · 06/07/2014 19:20

Proper coffee, always!
Instant is not coffee, the difference between instant and coffee is like the difference between fresh home cooked meal and processed tins of spaghetti hoops expired 70 years ago.
Why? Just get a glass of warm water instead!

I'm not a snob, I grew up in the Med.

DottyDooRidesAgain · 06/07/2014 19:21

Yes sash of course it would.

Well there you have it. Donkey piss taste better than instant coffee. Who knew Hmm

fancyacupoftea · 06/07/2014 19:23

The question though isn't whether or not instant coffee it's better. It's whether or not she should keep non-instant for guests.

fancyacupoftea · 06/07/2014 19:24

Shit, it does??

Softlysoftlycatchymonkey · 06/07/2014 19:26

Eh? I've never told guests that I only have instant - and nobody's ever asked!!

Real Italian coffee is wonderful though!

Instant coffee is so different from real coffee that I think she definitely should tell her guests.

motleymop · 06/07/2014 19:31

Donkey piss - get in ma belly

Flipflops7 · 06/07/2014 19:33

She needn't keep real for guests if her family like instant. She can say - 'tea or coffee? Coffee's only instant' so her guests can choose tea and not leave a full cup of 'coffee' behind when they leave. Job done!

WorraLiberty · 06/07/2014 19:34

It's just a drink

If any of my guests are going to complain about it, they can fuck off home or settle for water.

motleymop · 06/07/2014 19:36

Well said worra

Instant is vile. I'd pass and be disappointed you weren't serving normal proper coffee.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 06/07/2014 19:39

I drink black coffee and have cafetieres at home and in work. If you mentioned it was instant I would choose tea. If you didn't I'd drink whatever you gave me without complaint and ask for tea next time.
