dh thinks it is acceptable to say "he gave it to me and Peter" rather than "he gave it to Peter and me"

I was taught that the personal pronoun always follows the proper noun. Dh has asked me to give an example of when "me and Peter" is incorrect.

Um... all the time? Proper noun first as a matter of courtesy and style. Aibu?

You ABU to post this query here. Ask for it to be moved to Pedants' Corner and you'll probably get an informed response.

slartybartfast · 05/07/2014 19:22

i think yanbu,

Fruityb · 05/07/2014 19:22

Only in formal situations otherwise it's not that big a deal is it?

I teach English, my main bugbear is the wrong word, like you're disillusional or Pacific instead of specific lol.

SteeleyeSpanx · 05/07/2014 19:23

Language evolves

...and courtesy seems to be dying out.

LangenFlugelHappleHoff · 05/07/2014 19:23

I would say 'he gave it to Peter and I'

Is that wrong? Confused

Trapper · 05/07/2014 19:23

Just be grateful he isn't saying 'Peter and I'. That really bugs me.

mrsminiverscharlady · 05/07/2014 19:25

At least he doesn't say 'he gave it to Peter and I.' A far worse crime IMHO.

slartybartfast · 05/07/2014 19:25

peter and I is wrong, because if you took Pete rout of the equation, you wouldnt say He gave it to I.
thems the rules.

ICanSeeTheSun · 05/07/2014 19:25

In a formal setting then formal language is used.

When at home you can relax a bit about language

owlbegoing · 05/07/2014 19:25

IMO YANBU to post your thread here as everyone knows that it's always Peter and I and never me and Peter!! I think that pedent's corner is for things less straight forward.

oldgrandmama · 05/07/2014 19:26

Yes (I'm a fully paid-up member of the grammar police - working life as an editor) it's correct to put yourself last. So 'he gave it to Peter and me'. And while I'm on the subject - as an avid listener to BBC Radio Five Live in the weekday mornings, I am irrationally irritated when the otherwise blameless Nicky Campbell announces 'This is Radio Five Live, with Nicky Campbell and ---- (whoever is presenting with him)' This is WRONG and I've contacted the programme to point this out - Campbell did, for a while, announce himself second, but now back to the 'ME FIRST' announcement. It still bugs me to hell.

And yes, before some MNer says it, I really ought to get out more ...! Grin

LangenFlugelHappleHoff · 05/07/2014 19:26

Oh, well then, seems my education was lacking Blush

TruJay · 05/07/2014 19:27

I always thought the 'proper way' was Peter and I. I say me and.....whoever all the time though. I've noticed few and far between that say "Peter and I went shopping today" where I live though someone who did would stick out like a sore thumb.
Think "Me and Peter went tut shop"
I like to use the word 'the' though and teach DCs to also, its harder since DS has started school.

MrsWinnibago · 05/07/2014 19:27

Langen is correct! OP there is no "Me" and anyone! It's "I". Peter and I.

silveroldie2 · 05/07/2014 19:28

You are right OP and it's NEVER He gave it to Peter and I.

SteeleyeSpanx · 05/07/2014 19:29

It's always polite to put other people first. Hence, Peter and me, never me and Peter.

EBearhug · 05/07/2014 19:30

I agree that me should go last, but also you do know what is being said, and it's not as bad as "Peter and I" would be, so I doubt I'd be arguing the point just marking them down on my mental list of people who get it wrong, unless it was someone with whom I had on-going discussions about this sort of thing. It's courteous style rather than grammatical correctness. I do speak up when people don't actually make sense - then it's a communication failure.

Obviously I'm totally perfect and never get it wrong. Grin

TheSultanofPing · 05/07/2014 19:30

Judging by the difference in replies it would seem that it is anything but straightforward Smile

Nanny0gg · 05/07/2014 19:30

Would you really say 'He gave it to I'??

Of course you wouldn't!!

So sorry, MrsWinnibago. You're wrong as well!

NitramAtTheKrap · 05/07/2014 19:33

Correct

He gave it to Peter and me.

Peter and I went to the shop.

Incorrect

He gave it to Peter and I.

Peter and me went to the shop.

slartybartfast · 05/07/2014 19:33

i fyou were shopping, you woudl say (Peter and )I went shopping, for example.

slartybartfast · 05/07/2014 19:35

ooh,is there is a club, for Peter and me, to join with our correct grammar? Grin Wink

DinoSnores · 05/07/2014 19:35

Definitely a grammar pedant here! OP, you are right!
