dh thinks it is acceptable to say "he gave it to me and Peter" rather than "he gave it to Peter and me"

I was taught that the personal pronoun always follows the proper noun. Dh has asked me to give an example of when "me and Peter" is incorrect.

Um... all the time? Proper noun first as a matter of courtesy and style. Aibu?

Outing myself as an idiot... but could some explain who/whom to me please :)

SconeRhymesWithGone · 05/07/2014 20:28

Baby Who is a subject; whom is an object; it gets really tricky in clauses though. But the who/whom distinction is fast biting the linguistic dust, and I think it will be gone in a few years.

ICanHearYou · 05/07/2014 20:35

Peter and I went shopping

Because without Peter it would be

I went shopping

He gave it to Peter and me is right because without Peter it would be

He gave it to me.

StealthPolarBear · 05/07/2014 20:37

This thread would hugely fail the bechdel test

bunnyfrance · 05/07/2014 20:43

Merguez - Latin or any other foreign language!

MrsSchadenfreude · 05/07/2014 20:47

I did Latin at school, and also French, German and Spanish. I've also tutored kids in French and German, and had to teach them English grammar first. If you don't understand how your own language works, you stand very little chance of understanding another.

StealthPolarBear · 05/07/2014 20:48

I disagree. I studied latIn and found its grammar very useful for backing up english.

TheSultanofPing · 05/07/2014 20:50

ICanHearYou has explained it perfectly.

StealthPolarBear · 05/07/2014 20:54

And it's never ever right to talk about peter and I's holiday
ouch that hurt my ears

ICanHearYou · 05/07/2014 20:55

Yes it would be like saying

Come on holiday with I

Which makes you sound like a bit of a twat.

It's the possessive
In the world where "my" has ceased to exist

StealthPolarBear · 05/07/2014 20:59

I bet peter is cursing his parents. Why couldn't you have called me luther or den. Then I coukd have been in cool films a d soaps. But no you had to relegate me to primary school with janetand sodding john

ICanHearYou · 05/07/2014 20:59

I feel more sorry for Will, all those people in films firing at him

victrixludorem · 05/07/2014 21:04

To return to the OP's point though, "he gave it to me and Peter" is perfectly correct grammatically, just impolitely arrogant (which is the reason the personal pronoun comes second).

Count yourself lucky your DH doesn't say "he gave it to Peter and I". I would LTB if my DH ever said that. You can even hear it on the BBC Home Service (aka Radio 4 these days) from quite respected, educated journalists. Aaaaaaaagh!

ScouseBird8364 · 05/07/2014 21:05

Is this post serious?! Hmm

StealthPolarBear · 05/07/2014 21:07

Gave it to peter and I om radio 4??? Surely not

Fortysomethingwinelover · 05/07/2014 21:07

I would say "Peter and I"

StealthPolarBear · 05/07/2014 21:08

Do you know a peter?
And in what context would you say it

ScouseBird8364 · 05/07/2014 21:10

Jesus, are you really this bored on a Saturday evening? Confused

StealthPolarBear · 05/07/2014 21:11

Yes. What's your excuse?

fairnotfair · 05/07/2014 21:15

Who is this Peter dude? Why are you all going shopping with him? Does he have coupons or something?

Merguez · 05/07/2014 21:19

Scousebird anyone who is on Mumsnet on Saturday evening is bored…

Why are you on MN right now?

Everyone else in my family is watching football.

JimBobplusasprog · 05/07/2014 21:38

Okay, okay, the actual name in this conversation was Daniel. And the context was "She gave the dvd to me and Daniel". Just for clarification.

So Daniel is not watching the football then?
