dh thinks it is acceptable to say "he gave it to me and Peter" rather than "he gave it to Peter and me"

I was taught that the personal pronoun always follows the proper noun. Dh has asked me to give an example of when "me and Peter" is incorrect.

Um... all the time? Proper noun first as a matter of courtesy and style. Aibu?

Just leave out the Peter
and it's plain to see
I went to the shop
and they gave it to me.

Haha alice

ScrambledEggAndToast · 05/07/2014 19:49

Erm, who cares?

frames · 05/07/2014 19:51

Is there someone you and DC s could stay with while your DH is bought up to speed on this? He sounds extremely unreasonable.

Sicaq · 05/07/2014 19:54

A) Who cares, and
B) In the rarefied world of scientific research, the person to be named last on the paper, conference proceeding or presentation is understood to be the most important. Ooh, I've seen some spats over the right to be named last.

Merguez · 05/07/2014 19:55

Listen people.

I is used as the subject of the sentence.

Me is used of the object of the sentence.

To is a preposition which always takes the object.

So the correct grammar would be:

He gave it to Peter and me.

or

Peter and I were given it. (although that is rather tortuous)

Big tick!!

slartybartfast · 05/07/2014 19:57

might he want to go and live with bloody peter!

ImperialBlether · 05/07/2014 20:00

Basically, anyone who says "me and Peter" is a selfish bastard for putting themselves first.

That's how I got it through to my students, anyway Grin

Poussay · 05/07/2014 20:00

Arghh all the people saying it's Peter and I! I see the rules have now been explained plenty of times upthread but I hate it when people smugly use "Peter and I" because they believe "and me" is always wrong Confused

kawliga · 05/07/2014 20:00

Oh, great thread! Good work alicebannedit

londonrach · 05/07/2014 20:01

Suggest glass or two of wine and you wouldn't care who gave whatever to Peter.... Grin

Goldmandra · 05/07/2014 20:01

He gave the ball to me.

He gave the ball to Peter and me.

I went to the shop.

Peter and I went to the shop.

You just put 'Peter and' in front of the word which would make sense on its own.

Andrewofgg · 05/07/2014 20:01

Shakespeare wrote between you and I - probably having an off-day.

SinglePringle · 05/07/2014 20:02

If continuing the sentence would make sense with the proper noun (eg.. 'Peter and I went to the shop') with that removal of the proper noun then the use of 'I' is correct (eg. 'I went to the shop').

In the context given, it's correct to first use the proper noun (eg 'he gave it to Peter and me') for either the removal of the proper noun or the personal (pro?)noun would also be correct.

I think!

Aliceinvodkaland · 05/07/2014 20:05

i want to know what peter gave to who!!!! Grin

Andrewofgg · 05/07/2014 20:07

Or even to whom?

Aliceinvodkaland · 05/07/2014 20:08

ha ha andrew

whatever5 · 05/07/2014 20:09

It does sound better to say "he gave it to Peter and me" rather than "me and Peter" but I've didn't know that there is a rule of "proper noun" first in that context.

At least he doesn't say "he gave it to Peter and I" though!

ZanyMobster · 05/07/2014 20:09

I am Shock that people do not know the correct way of using Peter and I or Peter and me, I have just asked 8 yo DS and he knew and could explain why.

londonrach · 05/07/2014 20:09

Yes Alison what did Peter give and to whom?
