I like that La Roux...and Marina and the Diamonds...where did they go?

Confused

Just googled though and found that La Roux has in fact got a new album out...maybe the question should be why does it take some artists so long between albums?

that's a daft question too...it's a lot of work I suppose!

Wonder Stuff re-formed for a tour. Not sure if they did new material. Miles cut his hair short.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2014 13:13

Where did the annoying Beddingfield siblings go?

I'm not sorry they went but...everyone else seemed to love them.

Where are Ja Rule, Ashanti, Sean Paul and Blu Cantrell ( they all released massively popular songs when I was in my mid teens).

Released the other day that Rihanna has been around for the better part of 10 years. Her debut single came out when I was 15/16!

Sorry for double post
Natasha B married an American and lives there, her last album was only released in N America but she recording a new one now. Oh joy.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2014 13:21

A quick google tells me she was ranked 66th most influential woman in music by some poll. Like fuck she is.

sisterofmercy · 28/06/2014 13:32

@Cuteypatootey Travis come back with a new album every now and again. It sells to their core fanbase but not too many others. It seems to be enough for them to get by.

HappyHippyChick · 28/06/2014 13:37

David Grey played the Royal Albert Hall this week.

KarlWrenbury · 28/06/2014 13:40

Rhine · 28/06/2014 13:50

What about Dido and Duffy? Huge for a few months and then nothing.

Stinkle · 28/06/2014 13:50

What happened to Travis?

They're still knocking about. I've just seen them at a festival. Bloody good they were too

Oneforthemummy · 28/06/2014 13:56

Kenny Thomas Wink But seriously, I luffed him back in the day!

And I thought Tanita Tikaram was soooo deep. Twist In My Sobriety was brilliant. Still slightly confused by her brother being in This Life.

TheSpottedZebra · 28/06/2014 13:56

Didn't Duffy vow that she'd leave music if her subsequent album wasn't a hit? Then it wasn't, and she didn't.

I think with her, she was over-hyped, had artist/label issues, then that diet coke ad was the nail in the coffin and everyone had moved on a bit. She's still about also, just not the star she once was.

KarlWrenbury · 28/06/2014 14:01

TT was really good. A woman who was a woman in CLOTHES and played an instrument

squoosh · 28/06/2014 14:05

MrsWinnibago that's funny about your PWEI neighbour. I used to love all those bands in the early 90's. Was just so surprised their singer had gone on to do such fancy things!

KirjavaTheCat · 28/06/2014 14:13

Until you stop to think you don't realise how cut throat the music industry is. I hadn't given half these artists a second thought in years.

I'm more Megadeth than Atomic Kitten, and metal never dies \m/

olivespickledonions · 28/06/2014 14:20

James Morrison.

JennyOnTheBlocks · 28/06/2014 14:21

I saw the Wonderstuff supporting Public Image last year

Miles is also playing a small but perfectly formed venue near me very soon. I won't be buying a ticket.

LongTimeLurking · 28/06/2014 14:32

I'm not sure how many "good" singers/musicians I see on this list really. Most of the bands mentioned here are pretty mediocre but got lucky with one or two hit singles that then lead to big album sales.

So much of what is 'good' is decided by who the media and radio stations decide to hype to death this week.

We also need a list of bands that are never out of the fucking media but are still massively over rated / borderline shit. I will start off with: U2, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran.

RedToothBrush · 28/06/2014 14:34

Couple of reasons.

But ultimately finance and family.

The amount of money, even a moderately sized band can make these days is actually very moderate. You can't make money from album sales these days. The best source of income for most bands is now from tour tickets and associated merchandising.

Of course this has additional implications in terms of the impact this has on individuals and groups - lengthy periods away from home, friends and family. It can be incredibly lonely and tests the strength of even the most solid relationships.

There are few artists who tour constantly. The one I think of most who does at the moment is Frank Turner. However this has been at the expense of relationships and although I have a lot of time for him as an individual, I think living on the road for so long is not a good thing. I think it becomes very difficult to settle and relate to others living a 'normal' life.

The Charlatans have toured more sporadically, but consistanty with a fair amount of success, despite several tragedies. From what I understand, a certain amount of the motivation for them was being done over by their accountant and it became a necessity. And they have survived by buildin a solid and loyal fan base. Likewise The Manic Street Preachers. But both bands had contact and assets they managed to build up during the boom 90s. Something that makes it virtually impossible for newer bands.

As for what happens to people when they leave the industry; well it really depends on what they have to fall back on and how smart and forward thinking they are. I know of some who have worked in factories between albums. I know someone who ended up working at a local petrol station. I know one who bought a pub as a backup when they could. One who built a studio (which helped them do a self funded later album). One who bought a club. I know others how have gone into songwriting for other people. I know others who earn a living as session musics as the work isn't dependant on their own album sales.

And then there's the likes of Dr Brian Cox!

As for Duffy. She was dumb when she ditched Bernard Butler... someone who knows the industry inside out. I think she could have had a long career otherwise.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 28/06/2014 15:40

YES - I was thinking this about Supergrass the other day, when watching East is East. They were bloody brilliant.

Smilesandpiles · 28/06/2014 15:47

It's just a shame that the crap ones don't vanish into thin air.
