To wonder why some good musicians and singers just...disappear one day?

I like that La Roux...and Marina and the Diamonds...where did they go?

Confused

Just googled though and found that La Roux has in fact got a new album out...maybe the question should be why does it take some artists so long between albums?

that's a daft question too...it's a lot of work I suppose!

Little Boots is another recent one who had a good song then vanished.

Actually she had a totally brilliant entire album 'Hands' and then vanished.

Neneh Cherry 1988 / Neneh Cherry 2014.

Has not changed one bit. Buffalo Stance is one of the best 80's songs.

And some of them do leave music and go into other jobs. Miki from Lush works in magazines, Louise Wener from Sleeper is a novelist and Tom Hingley from the Inspiral Carpets is a university lecturer in music.

BOFster · 27/06/2014 23:18

Oh, and another one I liked- Ms Dynamite. I think she got a conviction. She's playing Tramlines in Sheffield next month though, which I'm hoping to catch.

Yes I loved gruffalo stance! Why didn't you know...?

Marina hasn't been away for long. Her last album was in 2012 and she's been touring and releasing bits and pieces since then. She worked with some big name producers on her last album (Dr Luke, Stargate etc) and ended up losing her record label a lot of money. But I think she's still with them and working on new material at the moment.

The Ting Tings are still around too. They've got a new single out called Wrong Club and their last album was only two years ago (it was a big flop). I think La Roux and The Ting Tings both struggled with the musical direction of their second albums, which might be why it took them so long. But also Ben left La Roux, so Elly is on her own now.

And Little Boots only released an album last year (also a massive flop). I think she was dropped after her first album and released the second one independently.

But yeah, most of the artists who have 'disappeared' are usually still around, they just don't have the same profile. Instead of hearing them on the radio you have to actively seek them out. I think delays are mainly caused by problems between the artist and the label. The artist might be desperate to release new material, but they can't do it without getting the go ahead from the label.

And Joan Armatrading a very talented woman - where she at?

squoosh · 27/06/2014 23:21

Does anyone else remember Pop Will Eat Itself? I made the most amazing discovery the other day.

Their lead singer Clint Mansell is now a film composer, who has composed the scores to Requiem For A Dream, Black Swan, The Wrestler and lots of others. I was shocked!

StealthPolarBear · 27/06/2014 23:22

Only ich bin ein auslander which was very catchy!

DrFunkesFamilyBandSolution · 27/06/2014 23:23

Neneh Cherry is 50!

Where do late 90s/early 00s American female Rnb singers go (Ashanti, Amarie, Ciara, the surviving TLC members, te old Destinys Child members, dammit I'll be on google all night now).

GoringBit · 27/06/2014 23:23

StealthPolarBear · 27/06/2014 23:25

Yes it definitely needs deleting. Ill put a reminder in my diary to report it in 2018

MrsWinnibago · 27/06/2014 23:26

squoosh YES and one member was our neighbour and friend of my sibling...growing up, he spend a lot of time in our kitchen...he dressed me up in his boot straps and studs once in the early 80s when I was about 10!

I never thought anyone here would know them!

Ciara is still big in the US. I think she just had a baby.

GoringBit · 27/06/2014 23:38

By the way, this was the cover of the Ting Ting's second album... does the red cap remind anyone of anything? (Clue, the best Easter bonnet EVER.)

MrRedAndBlue · 27/06/2014 23:41

A lot of people have mentioned Terence Trent D'arby and La Roux - which is a coincidence as here she is (with Heaven 17) performing a cover of 'Sign Your Name'

(the original version was produced by Martyn Ware of Heaven 17)

anyway... I'm off to see Gary Numan next week...

PookBob · 27/06/2014 23:43

Oh Finley :(

He was just such a cutie. I used to wander around Manchester hoping to bump into him :)

I always thought Lauryn Hill disappeared because she said: "I would rather die than have a white person buy one of my albums."

But accordiding to snopes, when I just Googled it's FALSE www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/laurynhill.asp#cQ6vTWKc2uFFT5RR.99

Where is Tina Turner these days?

MrRedAndBlue · 27/06/2014 23:53

well, considering she is 74, I imagine she's having a well-earned rest!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 27/06/2014 23:55

It's just a really really brutal industry and every penny that's spent on a band is set against their sales. I have a friend in a long-lasting, successful band who were 'let go' from their label but had their debt forgiven so they were actually delighted. Once they tipped from 'red hot' to 'respectable sales' they were essentially working for nothing.

Scarletohello · 27/06/2014 23:57

Kirjava, is that really Craig David... Ripped?!
