to think 5pm on a gorgeous Sunday evening is a wholly unacceptable time to mow one's lawn?

Well, it is, isn't it? For, I believe, 99% of the population. Unfortunately for ME, the socially inept buffoon residing behind my house makes up the other %.

I don't understand why you think he's being unreasonable. When would you prefer him to do it?? I like hearing the sound of lawn mowers, it always make it feel that bit warmer and summery, at 5am it wouldn't but 5pm is perfectly fine, YABU.

WhereTheWildlingsAre · 22/06/2014 17:28

I love the sound! Such a summer's day thing..

Bunbaker · 22/06/2014 17:29

Oh, for goodness sake!

I think 5pm is the optimum time. It is too damp with dew in the morning. Late afternoon is ideal when the grass is dry, but not so late that it will wake sleeping children.

DragonMamma · 22/06/2014 17:29

YABU

I don't see what the problem is? I can hear a few lawn mowers right now and if DH wanted to do ours now it wouldn't even cross my mind to tell him not to.

thenightsky · 22/06/2014 17:29

YABU. Its a popular time around these parts due to the 'green' bin collection being on a Monday.

However, I don't think I'm being unreasonable to pissed off with my neighbour for leaving his massive motorbike running under my bedroom window at 6am for 20 mins! Angry

thestoker · 22/06/2014 17:30

Blush I am clearly alone in my views !!! I just find the noise deeply irritating when I was enjoying the peace, quiet, and birdsong. Thought lots of other people would likely be relaxing in their garden at this time too, compared to eg a weekday evening.

YANBU. You need to send your neighbour a schedule outlining time slots and weather conditions in which he is permitted to cut his grass. If he deviates from this, ring 101.

halfwildlingwoman · 22/06/2014 17:31

It's not a problem. It is a perfect time. Even people on night shifts will be up, no-one will have gone to bed yet.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/06/2014 17:32

I wish everyone would use a push mower like I make DH we do. No zroom zroom noise.

DragonMamma · 22/06/2014 17:34

Looks like you're in the 1% who does find it unacceptable.

Late afternoon on a Sunday is when I remember everybody mowing their lawns. It's not irritating in the slightest.

myusernameis · 22/06/2014 17:34

Yabu. What time and what day would be better?

MissBattleaxe · 22/06/2014 17:35

YABU. Other people live near you and you have to lump it. It's not the middle of the afternoon when people might be sunbathing, it's not first thing in the morning and it's not really a child's bedtime.

In fact, I think it's a very convenient time. If you don't like the noise, tough. It's just one of those things.

OK, based on other mumsnet threads, pretty much any time before 10 on weekends is unacceptable for anything noisy. You're adding 5pm (not sure how much before or after you'd like to add to that) as being, what, too late to start mowing lawn? NHS advice is to stay out of the strong sun between 11 and 2pm. Let's assume people have things to do on weekend mornings, so we get a 2-3 hour afternoon window to mow the lawn each weekend, and if we miss it then what? Are people who do things on weekend daytimes never allowed to mow?

diddl · 22/06/2014 17:36

"5pm is a perfectly acceptable time to mow the lawn no matter what day it is. YABU"

Not here in Gernamy!

No mowing of the lawn on a Sunday, thank you very much!

diddl · 22/06/2014 17:37

Gernamy??!!Grin

tilliebob · 22/06/2014 17:38

Unless it's before 7 in the morning and after 10 at night, I couldn't give a toss. When are acceptable mowing hours, then? Do I need to scroll back to find out?

That is why I could never live in Germany. Too many rules.

squoosh · 22/06/2014 17:40

Lawn mowing is such a friendly sound I always think.

JeggingsHateMe · 22/06/2014 17:40

YABU.

It's perfect timing, I think you're completely mixing up your percentages.

drudgetrudy · 22/06/2014 17:40

An advert for "accoustic soundproof fencing" has just popped up _sounds ideaal for you

JohnnyBarthes · 22/06/2014 17:40

Yanbu. Although we occasionally choose this very time to mow ours specifically in order to piss off my neighbours, who regularly spend most of the weekend strimming, drilling and hammering. I think they're building the Ark Hmm

What's worse is that they don't work much of the week (semi-retired) yet they choose the weekend, when we're in, to do all this absurd diy.

NormHonal · 22/06/2014 17:40

So we should be mowing our lawn on a weekday evening?

Our neighbours are still out in their garden, so no mowing possible here today .
