I know it's been done to death but........ How much alcohol do you REALLY drink? And how much to you say you do in RL?

Just asking as I sit with my 2 nd glass of wine and plans for more. Since DS was around 9 m, I've found old drinking habits increasing.

KeepOnPloddingOn · 21/06/2014 09:08

None now. I used to be. Piss head though- had to stop. Haven't drank for over two years and thankfully my dc will never see me drunk / hungover, fingers x.

r2d2ismyidealman · 21/06/2014 09:11

I have a glass or two once or twice a month. Or not. I get drunk quickly and get boring immediately upon that happening. I'm the one who goes around saying "I'm drunk!" and nothing else. I then get tired and go to bed early.

I unwind with my hobbies, or annoying my OH with lots of chat... until I fall asleep, which even without wine is still ridiculously early.

I am super cool!

Happybeard · 21/06/2014 09:15

Sashh - it's awful isn't it. Like people telling you that smoking kills... (Shock shocker) I'm not a smoker but I think all this professional advice: 5 a day, 30 minutes of exercise... do they really think we don't know this stuff? Biscuit

sashh · 21/06/2014 09:19

Happybeard

Yep, I think I have done well and I probably know more about the issues now than who ever wrote the leaflet.

Back in the day when I was the one in uniform and asking about smoking I would always say how well someone was doing if they had cut back from 40 to 39 cigs a day because it is an achievement.

ahfuckit · 21/06/2014 09:22

I haven't read the whole thread yet but I couldn't not post. In January I went to see my GP regarding my addiction to alcohol. I was drinking 5 bottles of wine a week at the time, but years ago when I was in corporate life I drank anything up to 10 bottles a week. I never lied about it, but was deeply unhappy. Obviously I managed to halve this but I needed to do a lot more. I now don't drink. Major factors for me in getting to this point were the Turning Point organisation, the Soberistas website, and Kick the Drink...Easily by Jason Vale. I'm sorry to say some people on Mumsnet are less than supportive regarding people with addiction issues.

BasicallyFcuked · 21/06/2014 09:26

I'm an infrequent binge drinker.

I don't drink at home at all, it just doesn't appeal to me. I drink whenever I have an occasion...so a night out in pubs/clubs mainly.

I will usually get rat arsed tiddly once every two or three months on a night out, but then tee-total in between. I'm 28 and have been this way since I was 18, I've never drunk at home. I'd rather have a coffee.

DH is the complete opposite to me...he never gets drunk, ever. Doesn't 'do' big nights out drinking. But he'll have a glass of wine or a whisky and coke probably 3 nights a week. And every couple of weeks a bit more on a Saturday night, like a bottle of wine or half a (half-sized) bottle of whisky.

googietheegg · 21/06/2014 09:28

I have one medium glass of wine a night when dd is in bed, rarely any more

goodasitgets · 21/06/2014 09:30

I binge drink on nights out but haven't been out for a year so... Grin
Meals out are rare, maybe once every 6 months and I might have a glass of wine. So it depends
This week I had a bottle of beer (it was hot, beer was cold, v nice)
Can't remember when I last drank before that, maybe a month ago
I like gin, and wine etc and I will have one if someone offers it, just never occurs to me to drink on my own

Happydaysatlast · 21/06/2014 09:31

Oh well each to their own. Our youngest is 14 now older ones are 24/23 and it's the greatest pleasure to sit in the sun filled garden and consume wine and delicious food with my lads.

None of us get drunk, sometimes merry and personally I don't drink in the week because of work and the added calories.

We are all here a very short time and no one knows when their number is up so why live your life worrying. Have what you want and enjoy.

RufusTheReindeer · 21/06/2014 13:10

Would add that my drinking increased in my 30's

It was very infrequent before then

Coumarin · 21/06/2014 14:50

None.

I drank a lot in my late teens to keep up with my friends but my tolerance was incredibly low. I'd be ill for two days afterwards and one drink would make me tipsy. It also badly aggravated my anxiety. I didn't like the taste either.

So I stopped. I'd have the odd glass of champagne at celebrations or glass of wine at dinner when out but still was only doing that because that's what everyone did.

When we started ttc I didn't drink at all and then we went on to have many rounds of ivf treatment so I never drank again. That was 7 years ago.

Don't miss it or want it at all. We have wine in if DH fancies a glass and plenty of bottles for guests.

Coumarin · 21/06/2014 14:53

Should add, even if I hadn't had the ivf, I still wouldn't drink. It just doesn't appeal at all. I can see why others do like it however, it's just not my thing.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 21/06/2014 14:57

Most months none to a couple
I go out about four times a year when I probably have four or five in an evening
In summer I'm more likely to have a weak Pimms in the evening on a nice day such as today.

MummyPig24 · 21/06/2014 15:02

I drink hardly any alcohol. A cider or glass of wine here and there. Bf ds2 and we are skint too. Even when not bf I only really drink when I go out, which is hardly ever.

GoldenGytha · 21/06/2014 15:06

I don't drink any alcohol at all, never have done.

I have a friend who I sometimes go for lunch with, but it does annoy me when she doesn't respect that I don't drink and pushes and pushes me to "just have one, it won't kill you"

Some people just don't get that not everyone likes to drink.

CillaBlacksOrangeBouffant · 21/06/2014 15:30

I never used to drink much at all, but I have a friend who on reflection probably does have a drinking problem and who will turn up here several times a week with a litre of vodka.. I don't join in every time but probably twice a week I'll get through half a litre.. I don't miss it if it's not there and I don't crave it the rest of the time though

DenzelWashington · 21/06/2014 21:10

Honestly, once a week tops. Can't even drink wine neat any more, I have spritzers. I like spirits and beer more than wine. I have one drink, and that's generally enough. I start to feel unwell from alcohol very quickly (runs in the family) so I don't usually have much at one sitting.

littlepeas · 21/06/2014 21:25

Share a bottle of wine with dh 3 or 4 nights a week. There is the odd occasion where we'll drink a bit more - rare nights out, Christmas, weddings. I accidentally got quite drunk a few weeks ago (had amazing cocktail that was so lovely I had to have another one and realised too late that it was very very strong - I'd already had half a bottle of prosecco and a gin and tonic) and it was horrible - I hate being drunk.

LizzieVereker · 21/06/2014 21:28

None. I don't like it / need it. I used to pretend I drank a little though, because people can be so weird about not drinking. Can't be bothered to fib any more now.

casparthecat · 21/06/2014 21:41

I very rarely drink

I've had a large glass of red wine and a pint of lager shandy this week. That's a really heavy week for me.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/06/2014 21:50

I was thinking this t'other day. The last alcohol-in-a-glass I had was five years ago and that was because I had some leftover Baileys (about 2 months after Christmas) , I had maybe 3 glasses over a week , not driving, on holiday.
Now I use Amarretto in my Christmas marzipan, and Baileys in cheesecake.
I consider myself a non drinker not Tee Total though.

Coumarin · 21/06/2014 23:15

I used to do that too Lizzie I don't care anymore either. People are so strange about none drinkers though. Like you're judging them for drinking when actually I couldn't care less.

HugoTheHippo · 22/06/2014 07:49

I drink quite a bit. This week that included sharing a bottle of wine with DH and DMiL on Tuesday, a bottle on a night out on Weds, a bottle of lager on Thursday, half a bottle of wine on Friday and a bottle of lager on Saturday. I'd say that's more than a typical week. I would like to cut down, but there always seems to be an exceptional circumstance (someone coming over, it being Friday night, etc) which makes me feel like I'd like a drink. It doesn't bother me that much.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/06/2014 08:07

It varies with me, sometimes weeks or months without a drop, then I might have a bottle of wine over a few nights once or twice. More on holiday and Christmas Day, maybe 2 or 3 drinks a day. Nights out (maybe once every two months) - I might manage half a bottle of wine. If the Dr asks I say one or two units a week.

Xcountry · 22/06/2014 08:17

Well....... in the house with DH on his night off I could have a couple of bottles of wine, few ciders etc, if I am out for a night out oh lordy... whiskey shots, ciders, rum and coke, cognac, bourbon, the list could be endless - depends who I am with and what I am meant to be doing the next day. Can go tee total a fortnight or so but if we get time off together or I go out then I make up for it.
