To be horrified by the Card Factory

Browsing and came across this card. For those who can't see it - it's one of those 'old photo with a (supposedly) witty caption' 2 men are pictured standing by a fence with a caption that reads "Having popped out for a fag, Nigel was delighted when one turned up immediately."

Absolutely disgusted by this I called the Card Factory's head office straight away (I demanded the number in the shop), only to be informed "Head office only deal with complaints made in writing - there's nothing I can do for you now!"

AIBU to assume the good-readers of Mumsnet can help them address their misguided, revolting homophobic humour TODAY without waiting for letters to arrive?

I agree, humour can be offensive (as well as subjective) - but that's the down/upside (depending on your viewpoint) of living in a society where we operate free speech within a legal framework. Remember - this is one particular card we're talking about, and whilst there have been lots of other "what about this" examples thrown into the mix the OP was not, imo (and I suspect in the opinion of MNHQ given that it hasn't been deleted) goady or homophobic.

Given the polarisation of views on this subject I suspect this will be one of those "you're wrong" - "no, you're wrong" threads though, with no resolution.

So someone turns up, makes one provocative post and then deregs and you don't think that's goady? I do. And I am, actually, surprised that the thread wasn't deleted on that basis because others have for much less provocation.

I imagine the OP deregged because this was rather boring for them, it has been heated but no-one has been particularly nasty to one another, just put their views across. Maybe OP was hoping for "fuck all the fucking fags!" and "fuck you homophobic cunts" resulting in a mass banning.

I thought the actual op was funny, not the content but the style. I completely changed my mind during this thread after someone talked about her teenage son and left the "oh it's just a bit of fun" camp and apologised.
So not all bad for me, it made me think.

Theodorous, I've read the thread through and I admired how, when you changed your mind you made a point of saying it. We've all (probably) had threads where we start off thinking one thing and then listen to the views of others and change our minds. Not all of us would admit it though and I respected you for saying that you had changed your mind.

I saw this card in Card Factory today, and before I began to write a letter to the company about it, I looked online and found that this card has been causing offence to some of their customers for over a year now and the company are still selling it. I don't care whether people, regardless of their sexuality, find it funny. This is a vile card that is using a blatantly homophobic term to make a cheap joke. I for one will not be shopping at Card Factory again.

My gay friend sent that to my husband today. We thought it was hilarious.

and she replied that will be 5p .I said really I thought it was just the big stores charging she said no so I said well if that is the case I will have my money back so she gave me a refund and I walked out there loss on £15 they have not taken .

Cool story, but why search for a thread that is over a year old and post on it? Why not start your own?

In what way is Card Factory (stores in every town I know) not a big company? It isn't about square footage.

How did you spend £15 there anyway? Ours barely has anything over 50p.
