exceeded the targets for the MN giving week?

Here's the thread link:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/2087731-Giving-Week-is-here-donate-funds-to-MNer-nominated-organisations-and-MNHQ-will-match-them?msgid=47541127

Wikipedia tells me that there are 4,800,000 monthly users of MN. So if we all just get a quid each, that'd be £4.8m. So £25k should be more than achievable.

I see that some of the causes have reached their target, but what Womens' Aid have only had just over a grand.

MN are offering to match our donations, and there's gift aid too, so it's a very effective way of donating.

A quid each. More if you can afford it.

Baby, it allows that but many companies using the exemption will be nowhere near those levels.

MollyHooper · 08/06/2014 20:21

I think £25,000 is wonderfully generous and I can guarantee that charities like WA will be delighted with the money they receive that has been matched by MNHQ. They don't have to do any of those.

People can be so miserable.

BIWI · 08/06/2014 20:22

Babybarrister - because this isn't a one-off. They will be doing it again. I'm not sure why you think they should give more - 25k is hugely generous

MollyHooper · 08/06/2014 20:23

This Not sure why I wrote those.

HaroldLloyd · 08/06/2014 20:24

I don't understand the issue either, 25k is a generous donation.

Grin

Well it's been a good two or three years since I've had a good flaming on MN. I'd forgotten the experience. For those who are still seething, please note that I did apologise twice if I had offended. In retrospect, I should have proofread my op to check the tone before posting. But hey ho.

Thanks to all those who've "got" where I was coming from. I hope the total has been boosted. Flowers

Thanks for the reminder.

Twunk · 08/06/2014 20:28

Thanks for the reminder, had donated to woolly hugs but also meant to send to WA.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 08/06/2014 20:29

Thanks for posting this, I had no idea it was happening and I'm happy to give a tenner to women's aid.

Dornishwine · 08/06/2014 20:29

As with many other MNers, I give regularly to charities of my choice
I am sure the charities chosen are all very worthy, but starting a thread and telling people to Donate now??
That was never going to end well, was it?

MollyHooper · 08/06/2014 20:32

Well it kinda did end well.

People donated because of this thread. I donated again to Free Cakes For Kids out of sheer 'Hmph'.

I think it's great that MNHQ are giving £25K.

You don't hear the celebs on things like SoccerAid (which I have given to, as has DS2), or Comic Relief etc, saying "you give, we'll match it!" I know the Government are matching the SoccerAid donations, but it'd be nice to hear those doing the appealing saying they'd give substantial amounts too!

ouryve · 08/06/2014 20:36

Hopalong - I've knitted some woolly hugs squares, in the past, and they tend to use proper wool, rather than acrylic. Many vegans don't consume or wear anything that comes from an animal, as even keeping sheep for wool can be seen as exploitative (and there are some dubious practices in sheep rearing, in some countries, which even make me cringe as a far from vegan).

nemno · 08/06/2014 20:37

Thank you for the reminder.

OddFodd · 08/06/2014 20:45

Do people really need to outline exactly how much they give to charity on a monthly basis? Hmm

I mean, really, don't feel obliged to fork out but using this thread to boast about how very charitable you are in the normal course of your life is slightly nauseating

NoSquirrels · 08/06/2014 20:46

Thanks for this thread - was a timely reminder for me, so I appreciated it.

GetKnitted · 08/06/2014 21:05

Mardy, despite the flaming it seems to have helped somewhat :)

Goblinchild · 08/06/2014 21:13

I don't think people are boasting, OddFodd; I think that they are feeling defensive about the OP and are attempting to show that they do give to charities on a regular basis and not just when poked with a sharp stick.

gointothewoods · 08/06/2014 21:17

Not all mn members live in the UK.
I prefer to donate to my local women and children related charities. Not to UK based ones.

OddFodd · 08/06/2014 21:17

I don't see the point in posting at all if people haven't got anything positive to say Goblinchild and if people can afford to donate £3k+/year to charity, I'm sure they could stretch to an extra £2

Goblinchild · 08/06/2014 21:20

'I don't see the point in posting at all if people haven't got anything positive to say'

Littleturkish · 08/06/2014 21:33

Thank you so much- this had passed me by and I've just donated to women's aid.

Too work, mumsnet.

Littleturkish · 08/06/2014 21:33

And mardy!
