exceeded the targets for the MN giving week?

Here's the thread link:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/2087731-Giving-Week-is-here-donate-funds-to-MNer-nominated-organisations-and-MNHQ-will-match-them?msgid=47541127

Wikipedia tells me that there are 4,800,000 monthly users of MN. So if we all just get a quid each, that'd be £4.8m. So £25k should be more than achievable.

I see that some of the causes have reached their target, but what Womens' Aid have only had just over a grand.

MN are offering to match our donations, and there's gift aid too, so it's a very effective way of donating.

A quid each. More if you can afford it.

I didn't realise this was happening now either. And yes we need to give to Women's Aid. They have helped so many MNers leave terrible relationships.

"But you are being unreasonable - IMO - to try to demand that people donate to charities, chosen by others, when they may have perfectly good reasons for not doing so"

OK. I am trying to encourage, not demand. Maybe I was a little overenthusiastic in my OP. My reason for doing so was to try and raise more awareness, and provoke people who hadn't got around to donating into action. MN is famous for its generosity, Christmas appeals, woolly hugs etc. Apologies to anyone who is offended by my forthright OP. Please don't let it put you off donating if you were considering doing so.

Our household giving is fully committed through direct debits. I tend not to give spontaneously but in a thought-through way.

Being controversial, as op puts it, just annoys me and puts me off taking part.

Thanks for highlighting though - I hadn't realised that woman's aid was flagging, so will be adding my donation. I wouldntve thought to otherwise

Look, it's race for life this month.... Plenty of us are donating. And running, you know?? Getting off our arses and doing something.... Not just chatting about it on MN

A big thanks for the heads up from me, Mardy.

I have been meaning to donate but it has completely slipped my mind (having a baby the day after tomorrow!) so your thread caught my attention and prompted me to send some cash.

They are all good causes, I hope the publicity and donations are very useful to each charity. Women's Aid is particularly dear to my heart. Flowers

Anyway need to go for a bit.

Feel free to bump.

And flame away if you like if it keeps it bumped.

The Women's Aid that is being donated to here is the federation of england - they provide no funding to grass roots domestic abuse services and in actual fact charge small charities to belong to the federation and use the women's aid name.

WAFE (Women's aid federation of england) pay for half of the helpline (refuge pays the other half) and pay for national campaigning for DA but all the local refuges and abuse services in the country are expected to fundraise for themselves and are not allowed to contact any of the WAFE supporters or celebrities for assistance with this.

I'd much rather MNers gave a fiver to their local service - it would mean so much more, than give it to WAFE (even if Mumsnet are willing to match it).

OK, I get that lots of people donate/raise money in other ways. Apologies once again if I have offended.

Maybe some of us have donated to Scottish women's aid instead of the English one.
Maybe some of us have donated to local hospices
Maybe some of already donate to charity via direct debit

Being Vegan, the only two I would consider, is Woman's Aid and the Hospice, but I have local charities that need the donations much more, the hospice being Zoe's Place.

Like many others, I also give via DD and have my Ebay etc buying linked into charity tax giving.

Your opening was overly preachy but well meant.

Thanks for the reminder, Mardy - I hadn't realised there was a 'sell-by' date, and this was something I started to do but then couldn't complete, as there was no PayPal option and I didn't have my credit card with me.

I'll go and finish making my donation now.

And some of you should be ashamed on this thread.

You must have understood the intention behind Mardy's post. No need to be so churlish/mealy mouthed.

What's the barrier to the other charities if you're vegan?

How disappointing, given the plethora of posts about DV on MN that the Women's Aid target is so far from being achieved Sad

""What's the barrier to the other charities if you're vegan?""

Wool and the cake ingredients and I don't agree that every child needs a Birthday cake, they are cheap enough, if a child is going without that, I should imagine there is plenty of other issues that are occurring.

If anything disadvantaged children are fed mainly crap, I would back a Veg giving charity.

My teens are meat eaters, but have Vegan crisps, junk food etc.

I would if given to an animal charity, who are really suffering in these times.

In regards to Woman's Aid, usually local charities are more effective.

I think the reputation of WA took a battering on here a while ago due to the rescue mission thread.

All of the stories and explanations afterwards never really resolved the doubt.

If Refuge had been chosen over WA as a banner organisation for donations there might have been a better response.
