exceeded the targets for the MN giving week?

Here's the thread link:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/2087731-Giving-Week-is-here-donate-funds-to-MNer-nominated-organisations-and-MNHQ-will-match-them?msgid=47541127

Wikipedia tells me that there are 4,800,000 monthly users of MN. So if we all just get a quid each, that'd be £4.8m. So £25k should be more than achievable.

I see that some of the causes have reached their target, but what Womens' Aid have only had just over a grand.

MN are offering to match our donations, and there's gift aid too, so it's a very effective way of donating.

A quid each. More if you can afford it.

Womens aid is a fantastic charity and I already donate to them regularly.

I'm not sure about the cakes and blankets. It's a nice gesture but in the grand scheme of things I'm sure there are more deserving charities. Maybe I'm being hugely unfair and mean.

ouryve · 08/06/2014 16:04

On what grounds do you not "believe" in PDA, sunshinecity?Hmm Learning about it changed our lives - we have 2 boys on with ASD and one of them quite plainly hadn't read the instruction manual because most of the standard ASD interventions made him melt down even more.

Goblinchild · 08/06/2014 16:07

I didn't know it was happening either, is there a banner headline on the home page or something?
I donate to charities of my choosing on a regular basis, and the last time I got a lecture and told to get off my arse and give more just pissed me off.
Birthday cakes for kids? Really? One of the key charities that MN feels needs to be given thousands?

HaroldLloyd · 08/06/2014 16:14

Why come on here moaning about the OP moaning about the charities moaning about being told which ones to support?

There are no guns to heads, really, donate or don't.

Sheesh.

ouryve · 08/06/2014 16:14

I think the charities were chosen on the grounds of nominations by MNers, btw.

Goblinchild · 08/06/2014 16:15

I know, otherwise I'd have said MNHQ.

TheFairyCaravan · 08/06/2014 16:17

I think it's great that MN Woolly Hugs were chosen.

It is organised by MNetters, MNetters and their families do the crafting, and a lot of the people who benefit from it are MNetters.

SecretWitch · 08/06/2014 16:18

Bump for you..

I am in the US and would love to donate to Wooly Hugs...but cannot figure out how to do so... because I am thick

SecretWitch · 08/06/2014 16:18

See cannot even accomplish strike through thingy!

SweepTheHalls · 08/06/2014 16:19

Ok! I've donated to Women's Aid now!

TheFairyCaravan · 08/06/2014 16:19

Meant to put in my last post, lots of MNetters who can not knit or crochet donate and provide wool for Woolly Hugs, so it is a MN community thing IMO.

SecretWitch · 08/06/2014 16:20

Christ, I cannot even spell WOOLY, either..

I may be starting my own charity soon..

Mama1980 · 08/06/2014 16:22

Apologies I missed this. Have now donated to womens aid. Thanks for highlighting this Thanks

HermioneWeasley · 08/06/2014 16:24

Just donated to women's aid - can't believe it's only a third of target.

Anyway, YABU because I didn't even have to get off my arse to do it. Arse cheeks remained firmly squished on the ground while I did it all through the miracle of PayPal.

minniebar · 08/06/2014 16:25

Yes, there was a thread a few weeks back asking for suggestions about which charities to support. It sounds like it'll all be happening again at some future point, so nominate who you want to support then.

Woolly Hugs were chosen (I suspect) because it's MNers who make the squares and provide donations and MNers (or their families) who receive the resultant blankets. So it's a very MN type of cause.

I really don't understand how a donation to them benefits the people running it though Hmm

HermioneWeasley · 08/06/2014 16:29

Some people will take offence at anything won't they?

If you genuinely were going to donate and then the OP's thread put you off, then well done for punishing the charities. That'll teach OP.

Donate or don't.

HermioneWeasley · 08/06/2014 16:30

Agree Minnie - the wooly hugs community are hardly known for being grabby, self serving bastards are they?

shopaholicbookworm · 08/06/2014 16:30

'Giving' should be just that - not demanded! There are 180,ooo registered charities in England and Wales and people will choose those that resonate the most with them personally. Some charities will always raise more because of the nature of what they do. I contibute to charity in a number of different ways but try to remember that we are swamped with 'just give' requests at every turn these days - TV, online, print media, Big Issue sellers, charity shops, door-to-door collections etc - let's not make giving to charity a chore.

GarlicJuneBlooms · 08/06/2014 16:31

YANBU :) I've just made a tiny donation to Women's Aid, which Mumsnet will double for me ? ? Cheers for the reminder!

Goblinchild · 08/06/2014 16:31

I dislike being heckled, insulted and told to get off my arse.
It's rude and unnecessary, and worse than chugging.

Pagwatch · 08/06/2014 16:31

Oh I think several posters just jumped with glee at the opportunity to post uptight, arsy shite on this thread. It's quite made their day.
But I'm with Mardy in that it certainly kept the thread bumped so no harm done.

Thanks Mardy. I hadn't actually spotted the thread but will go and look now.

HaroldLloyd · 08/06/2014 16:32

It's not that hard to ignore the thread if you are all gived out rather than try and piss all over it.

Yeah, I am still on my arse Grin The thread title makes it sound harder than it is! And MUMSNET HAS DOUBLED MY DONATION (important!)

ChineseFireball · 08/06/2014 16:39

Some people need to stop getting so wound up. Donate or don't. Thanks for the reminder, Mardy.
