exceeded the targets for the MN giving week?

Here's the thread link:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/2087731-Giving-Week-is-here-donate-funds-to-MNer-nominated-organisations-and-MNHQ-will-match-them?msgid=47541127

Wikipedia tells me that there are 4,800,000 monthly users of MN. So if we all just get a quid each, that'd be £4.8m. So £25k should be more than achievable.

I see that some of the causes have reached their target, but what Womens' Aid have only had just over a grand.

MN are offering to match our donations, and there's gift aid too, so it's a very effective way of donating.

A quid each. More if you can afford it.

Are they joking with 'cakes for kids'?! Is that really one of the most pressing issues society is facing? There must be about 17,000 charities that deserve that money more.

There's also a way to raise funds for charities that you care about by using the easy fundraiser site. If you go through the site when using ebay Amazon etc etc you will raise a little cash each time you buy.

I am donating to the charities of my choice already, but thanks for the reminder Mardy.

Thanks for the reminder, I didn't realise there was a time limit.

YANBU pointing it out- I had no idea they had a 'giving week'- however, having looked I prefer to choose my own and have just sponsored two people.

I just read what Cakes for Kids do.
Of all the things a family in poverty need, a birthday cake, is possibly the most Marie Antoinette-esque solution. Sad To coin a phrase "Let them eat Birthday cake".

Yes I agree. I rarely think a charity shouldn't be supported. In this case though, I make an exception.

Two of those charities are a ridiculous waste of funds IMO. I really don't feel bad for choosing to support my own.

Thanks for the reminder. I hadn't realised there was a cut off point. Although the cakes for kids one seems a bit odd I agree.

I donate to lots of charities thanks, just gave money to my friend who did the moon walk, so I don't need to be shouted at

Op: your over aggressive tone has probably put loads of people off - giving to charity is not compulsory, & people shouldn't be made to feel guilty if they haven't contributed. I give regularly to charity - but they are charities of my choice.

If the ops post puts anyone off then they clearly werent going to donate anyway.

I have just made a small donation to Womens Aid. However I also donate monthly to three charities, plus to the at least monthly charity fundraising that colleagues at work get up to in their spare time, like marathons, bike rides etc. All good causes but there is a limit to my spare cash, especially with a 1 per cent pay rise the last few years!

It's such a stupid idea. Are the |MNHQ team so arrogant that they think we should want to give money to the charities they choose? Why wouldn't people give money to the charities we choose ourselves

The birthday cake & woolly blanket ones seems more beneficial to the woman-run 'kitchen table' businesses that make them , than the recipient.
The hospice one-people would surely rather give to a local hospice.

PDA - I can't speak for others but I don't even believe in it.

Women's aid -I might possibly give to , but agin more likely to give to a local refuge.

Thats what I was thinking about the cake one, to be honest.

I have my own charity close to my heart and I donate and fundraise for this. I will support what charity I choose, I can't afford to support them all and I admit to being a wee bit disappointed that all the charities nominated aren't getting an equal share.
