to not buy dd a trampoline as I think there dangerous ?

So my dd (5) keeps asking for a trampoline, I saved some cash but now im not to sure I know loads of people that have them and their kids have never hurt themselves but about 5 friends say there dc have hurt themselves. Dd has no fear an falls over fresh air. What do you think trampoline or no trampoline ?

I have never ever regretted buying a trampoline, excercise and fun in one easy package, we replace the padding and the nets when they start to get worn but I would say no other toy item has ever had as much use in this house. They often just sit on it chatting and dd2 has taught the dog to get on. In fact I am considering upgrading to a much larger one and just giving up on nice garden space.

The Trampoline was one of the best things I have ever bought.

Best item we have bought second to the dog. All my 3 love it. We have a net and steps up to the opening. I can see it from the window and they all have great fun and exhaust themselves

My nephew broke his arm on one. I also know another little boy who broke his arm running around the play ground at school so if you ask me, it's luck of the draw.

I think they are dangerous. I know plenty of people use them and have no problems but I also know quite a few who have ended up in A&E. Just this week my friends 3 year old broke his collar gone on one. My nephew broke each arm on 2 separate occasions on his trampoline.
We have one but I wouldn't have bought one. Funnily enough we were out at a country park with my mil when my DD was 4 and DS's was a baby and we got talk b to another Mum who was an A&E doctor . She was talking about how she would never ever have one as she saw so may injuries at work from them.
When we got home DH proudly showed the present he had bought while we were out - any guesses what?????
We have had a few sprains but nothing serious yet and we do use it carefully but I do think they cause a lot of injuries.

I agree with the others, best money ever spent on the kids. Use with a safety net and supervision, she will love it.

We've never regretted buying ours as it's used constantly in the summer months. Literally hours if not days of fun and good exercise too (though not for my pelvic floor )

We had ours sunk into the garden in a hole that had been meant for a pond so we don't have any nets round it.

We've had ours since my son was 5, and it still gets lots of use 8 years later! We've had no injuries on it, and replace the pads and safety net when they start to get worn. I've never let loads of children on it at the same time as I think that's when a lot of accidents happen. He's had some lovely times on that trampoline, bouncing, laying there chatting, picnics, being sprayed with the hose, and once we even camped overnight on it in a little blow up tent! It's the best thing we ever bought for him, and I'll be sad when it eventually goes as it is tied up with so many happy memories of his childhood for me.

Ds(10) never got a trampoline as I have a friend who works in a+e and told me about a couple a nasty accidents. But I know a lot of people have then with no problems.

All depends on how risk adverse you are. You can reduce the risk by getting the right saftey kit and closely supervising every time she uses it.

Could you get one with netting around the outside?

I know loads of people who use them without incident and it largely depends on how they are used. Not too many DCs, responsible adult supervising and the safety net = heaps of safe fun. But doing back flips into the pool off them, friend's DS, resulted in a broken neck when he misjudged and landed on the grass.

My DS aged 4, loves his. So do I. It's great fun and excersise! Keeps them amused too :) you can get the ones with a safety net around them x

Best thing ever! We have had a ginormous one for about 10 years now, which has had, and still gets, lots of use from our 5 children and their friends. My teenage DD and I were out sunbathing on it earlier today.
We've never had any accidents, though I did have to cover my eyes when my 20 year old son and his friends were jumping onto it from high in a tree the other week

I have met 2 kids who injured themselves on a trampoline, but neither had the safety nets on at the time. Had they had them they probably would not have got injured at all (both were injured by the fall from the height and landing badly - could have fallen from a wall and done the same injuries tbf). So I would say with suitable safety nets and mats and also supervision, it is a very small risk.
My DC had a trampoline for about 2 years, lots of good fun and exercise and no injuries to date.

I work in a hospital and most accident caused on trampolines are when multiple children are using it.

I think as long as there is only 1 child at the time it is safe.

Just bought this for DD birthday

They are my worst nightmare. I see why a lot of people like them but I'm really glad our garden ist flat enough to have one.

The worst thing is going to other people's homes and there are several kids all bouncing on the trampoline. sends shivers down my spine. And yes they can break an arme running round a play ground but DD friend suffered a really bad break on one. Took her quit some time to recover from it. I think they are great when used how you are supposed to. Which is one at a quit dangerous otherwise.

My kids have had a trampoline for years and never hurt themselves. They love it and get loads of exercise on it. I do 'advise' that they bounce one at a time or only gently if more than 1!

One child at a time and a non-negotiable no somersault rule. Oh and buy a nice big egg timer so they can monitor how long they are on by themselves to avoid arguments when they are queuing!

My daughter's orthopaedic surgeon (that is another long story for another thread) said never to buy one. He said he sees loads of very bad falls and bones broken from them and just generally thinks they shouldn't be sold! In our case we won't because one of my DCs has hip dysplasia and trampolines are just a no no. However we know loads of people who have them. I think the accidents usually occur when there are more than 1 kid on them and the lack of proper supervision. Everyone feels (me included) because they have nets etc they are safe but nothing is as safe as having an adult actually right there supervising I suppose.

I am a trampolining coach an will NEVER have a trampoline in my back garden.

I have personally witnessed knees dislocating, snapped tendons, broken bones occurring,more cuts and bruises than I care to think about, when people know what they are doing and are doing it under supervision.

I just don't want to be dealing with it in my back garden

If YOU are going to supervise her on it ALL the time, and not allow silliness, or multiple use etc...then I guess it would be ok....

I personally am not prepared to invest MY time in supervising and have said so to our kids... we will not be having one.

incidentally they have seen their uncle who had a "trampoline accident" - well, he broke his back when he slipped on the steps up to the trampoline... bare feet, metal rung, slipped off and fell back on to a short wall beside the trampoline..... accidents - by their very nature - do not always happen how or where you expect...

Of course accidents happen on trampolines, just the same as they do on bikes or skateboards or climbing frames et al.

We had a large one, with a safety net and padding, it was used for all sorts of games with several children, often including bouncing balls. Lots of laughs and giggles.

As they got older they used it to bounce into the swimming pool very large pop-up paddling pool. It was great fun (obv if the pool is deep enough)

As long as properly supervised and things are not allowed to get silly, it provides an enormous amount of outdoor fun and exercise.

We didn't regret ours - had it for years and it provided many, many hours of fun and laughter. No accidents here (personally speaking)

Another one saying that the trampoline was one of the best things we ever bought for our boys.

I think if you use the padding and the net, and don't let more than one child on at a time, you can reduce the risks as much as possible. And bear in mind that few really active activities (apologies for the repetitiousness) are without risk, but the benefits (fun, exercise, doing something not screens-related) outweigh the risks, IMO.

One at a time, with the safety net, and check the springs.
