To think Tom Cruise is a really lovely bloke?

Just seen him on Graham Norton and he's so funny and able to laugh at himself. His co-stars always seem to love him and he just comes across as a thoroughly nice guy. I know he gets a lot of bad press but I am not sure it's all deserved.

Grin just watched it again.
I'd forgotten he couldn't go on holiday.

SirChenjin · 04/06/2014 14:11

I've heard from people in the industry NC is aloof and not particulary pleasant

I've heard that too

Nancy66 · 04/06/2014 14:26

I know a make up artist who works with NC regularly and says she's very friendly, funny and down to earth.

CateBlanket · 04/06/2014 14:44

Team Tom here Grin

Moln · 04/06/2014 15:39

Just tried to watch that video Nancy66, couldn't managed much of it though. I dislike TC, can't watch w film with him in it, he's alway playing the unrealistically heroic one it seems, it's as if he has to pretend to be amazing.

squoosh · 04/06/2014 15:44

I can't watch any of his films either. His acting skills are adequate at best but I just find it hard to see him as anyone but Tom Cruise. The worst was that 'sexy' Eyes Wide Shut he made with NC where they played a pair of glamorous, devil worshipping swingers or something.

Such rubbish.

awaynboilyurheid · 04/06/2014 16:07

Ive always liked him thought he was a good actor no jack reacher obvs but so handsome but agree with hindsight
age that there is something staged about him, thought the GN show with Emily watsit was only there to show him in a good light she was very syncophantic with him, it was interesting and agree he didnt seem to like Charlize theron maybe she stood up to him ? she looks the type who can handle herself , the whole scientology thing does freak me out but then so does most organised religion to be fair

ThaneOfScunthorpe · 04/06/2014 16:08

I thought the best thing he did was Magnolia. "Respect the cock!" That's a believable Tom Cruise right there.

Veins · 04/06/2014 20:13

Charlize is going out with Sean Penn she's hardly a good judge of men!

NickiFury · 04/06/2014 20:26

Ah yes Sean Penn, the tie up and threaten with base ball bat hubby. A real prize!

Scientology is creepy and controlling. The best manipulators are always charming.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 04/06/2014 20:34

I genuinely thought this was a reverse AIBU.

Tensmumym · 05/06/2014 14:19

Only saw part of it because I can't stand Seth McFarlane. I had thought Charlize Theron had something about her but her decision to appear in Seth's film - and to say on the GN show that she would be naked in the film - has made me look at her in a different way. Great review of their film here.

phantomnamechanger · 05/06/2014 14:25

at about 14-18 yo I used to fancy him like heck and dreamed of the fairy tale romance and happy ever after.....the more I learn about him the more I think I had a lucky escape!

Tensmumym · 05/06/2014 14:37

A very lucky escape I think.

LucilleBluth · 05/06/2014 15:01

The Scientology stuff is too far out IMO and has nearly killed what was a brilliant career. When I was growing up he was the biggest actor in the world.....before Brad Pitt and Clooney et al.

Re Charlize Theron, according to a celebrity gossip website I visit (I know, shoot me now) she is an habitual user of a certain substance that keeps her going.

bronya · 05/06/2014 15:04

He made his wife give birth without pain relief or being allowed to make any noise at all. That's not a nice man who loves his wife...

lilsteph · 05/06/2014 15:06

Yeah he seems lovely I have to say its just whole scientology for me, I dunno its very strange and apparently he's quite obsessed with it x

DenzelWashington · 05/06/2014 16:36

What goes for Tom applies to all slebs: by all means find them appealing, fanciable and charming, or the complete reverse. But never think that you know them or you've gleaned their true character from watching their films or media appearances. You haven't.

FreudiansSlipper · 05/06/2014 16:44

His public persona is very charming a little too sincere at times

His ex wife literally escaping from him then applying for a divorce tells quite a different story to what he likes the public to believe

Wadingthroughsoup · 05/06/2014 19:31

Totally agree with KellyElly. I think his public persona is very deliberate and very finely honed. He wants to be perceived as charming and down-to-earth. It's not difficult for someone with that amount of power, money and influence (constantly surrounded by 'yes men', I imagine- who would want to f*ck up their chance to be working with such a megastar?) to be perceived exactly how they want to be.

I find him deeply sinister actually.

HowAboutNo · 05/06/2014 21:11

I have SUCH a good story about how nice he is. I tell it to everyone so would totally out myself if I told it (even though it's not my story, it's a friend's!)

Basically, he had no reason to be as nice and accommodating as he was, but he really was lovely, and repeatedly remembered her when he saw her (she's a fanatic) at events and gave tickets to premieres, had long chat etc.

I'm assuming the scientologists have some really good shit on him... That's how they keep them.
