To think Tom Cruise is a really lovely bloke?

Just seen him on Graham Norton and he's so funny and able to laugh at himself. His co-stars always seem to love him and he just comes across as a thoroughly nice guy. I know he gets a lot of bad press but I am not sure it's all deserved.

Yy family guy had a running tom cruise joke for a while yet he was still grinning , and who said he had a bad childhood I dont think he did he seemed to have a normal family life

annebullin · 04/06/2014 08:48

Emily is an excellent actress; I thought TC and Emily were very well rehearsed.
I don't care if he's a shape shifting weirdo, I quite like the films he's made post Top Gun/Cocktail. (And I also agree that he was hilarious in Tropic Thunder.Grin) He can do different roles equally well. Lestat in Interview with a vampire will always be my absolute favourite vampire of all time.

I also noticed the tense body language between Emily and Charlize and wondered what had gone on there.

DurhamDurham · 04/06/2014 08:49

I shudder when I see him on tv ( and not in a good way Grin )

He seems to be trying so hard all the time. It must be exhausting, for him and those around him.

I'd love the chance to hear what his ex-wives really think.

I wonder who is being lined up to become the next Mrs Cruise, and the one after that?

Mrsjayy · 04/06/2014 08:51

It was a very awkward sofa I thought yes ok he can have tropic thunder he was v funny,

aprilanne · 04/06/2014 08:57

no way . he said mental health problems doen,t exist .and scientology doen,t recognise autism .they hate mental illness or lack of mental capacity .so with and autistic son and mentally ill hubby .i think him and his church are arses .

nipersvest · 04/06/2014 08:58

i've never met him so i have no clue if he's nice or not, but do have 2 comments to the op -

  1. "Just seen him on Graham Norton and he's so funny and able to laugh at himself" - he's an actor Wink
  1. "His co-stars always seem to love him" - you don't know what's been written into their contracts. it's in a movie studio's best interest to seem to have a cast that all gets on well when it comes to film promotion. no-one is going to sit in an interview and say 'yeah, he's an absolute knob and a nightmare to work with' are they!
ThatBloodyWoman · 04/06/2014 09:00

I read that because of his scientology malarkey, Katie was expected to try to remain silent through childbirth.
I've often wondered if thats true or media shite.

annebullin · 04/06/2014 09:01

I didn't know he had ADHD. Perhaps he has had bad experiences of psychiatrists which have negatively shaped his views.

Not excusing his views about 'curing' ADHD and PND with vitamins and exercise (which is a view that has also been promoted on here in the past) as I think that's dangerous nonsense, but it's not specifically TC/Scientology nonsense.

Stinkle · 04/06/2014 09:02

I never liked Tom Cruise until I watched Rock of Ages Blush

The scientology stuff, and the jumping on Oprah's sofa puts me off .

A few of my friends have worked with him and they've all said he's a really lovely bloke - no diva demands, no tantrums or anything like that. Just thoroughly nice, works hard, doesn't keep anyone waiting

MsUumellmahaye · 04/06/2014 09:08

Not a fan at all. Jack reacher! Just no. However he was the best film vampire ever.

Nancy66 · 04/06/2014 09:10

I think he's a pretty decent actor but there's something about him that creeps me right out.

that jumping on the sofa thing

those weird scientology videos

the not seeing Suri for months on end

The way Katie holmes seemed to be some zombie in his presence

seems to have turned his oldest two children against Nicole Kidman

...oh and the shoe lifts

no ta

ChelsyHandy · 04/06/2014 09:16

He does seem nice, but he is an actor, so it could be an act. He does seem to struggle (even more so than most in Hollywood) with his relationships long term - several women do seem to have done a bit of a runner for him.

I don't think he looks old though BitOutOfPractice. He doesn't look like he is in his twenties any more, but compared to most men his age, he doesn't look old.

whatsagoodusername · 04/06/2014 09:29

I would imagine he's pleasant to be around, takes a superficial interest in anyone talking to him, and is charismatic. So a good person to have at a party or in the pub.

Probably less so behind closed doors.

flipchart · 04/06/2014 09:46

He's like one acquaintances I have, I imagine, nice to meet up with once in a whose a good laugh and fun but when I go away I think thank fuck I'm not married to them.

annielouise · 04/06/2014 10:41

I don't have a strong view on him really. The Scientology stuff is weird but then I think any religion is when taken to the extreme.

For those saying Nicole Kidman's reaction to the divorce speaks volumes I thought that was very put on and staged. She could have had the divorce papers sent to her but chose to pick them up (if that what she was doing) and have herself photographed - presumably informing the paparazzi she'd be there. Then that over-exaggerated act of relief. I think that says a lot about her too, not just him. I like Katie for just getting on with life although she needs to keep Suri out the papers (get her face pixellated at least which might mean the paparazzi give up).

squoosh · 04/06/2014 10:42

YABU.

He's get his public persona down to a fine art, all easy smiles and hours spent happily signing autographs.

In real life I suspect he's a very different man.

Katie Holmes pulled a blinder escaping his creepy clutches.

squoosh · 04/06/2014 10:43

annielouise I don't think celebs can go the pixellated route for their child's image when the photos are being taken in America.

annielouise · 04/06/2014 10:51

I didn't know that squoosh. That's terrible. The DM were awful about that little girl for absolutely ages. There should be an international law of protecting photos being taken of children as they haven't courted the attention.

pinkmoomin · 04/06/2014 10:55

A few people I know who have actually met or worked with him say he's a nice guy. I have no idea what he is like behind closed doors but don't imagine him to be some evil villain. He seems to have brought up two very grounded children from his marriage to NC. I've heard from people in the industry NC is aloof and not particulary pleasant.

pinkmoomin · 04/06/2014 10:59

Sorry meant NK

squoosh · 04/06/2014 11:04

There was a great article in Vanity Fair a year or so ago which detailed how Tom (and Scientology) go about finding him a wife. Not so great for the woman who nearly made the cut though!

NickiFury · 04/06/2014 11:07

I always thought that act of relief from NK was very staged too.

I can totally understand KH reluctance to have her child brought up as a Scientologist though and would have done exactly as she did to remove her from that influence.

KellyElly · 04/06/2014 11:09

Obviously I don't know him personally, but I think he is an absolute professional and has a finely honed and constructed image that he portrays in public. He spends two hours posing for selfies with fans and signing autographs at premiers (don't forget holding babies and chatting on the phone to peoples mums), he comes across as an all round 'good guy' and he's perfectly presented at all times. You never see him have a bad day or get pissed off with his fans or the media. I don't think the Tom we see dazzling us with his Hollywood smile and general affability and charm is anything more than a persona. What he is actually like, only his friends and family will ever know.

Nancy66 · 04/06/2014 11:15

he looks property wide eyed and unhinged here

SisterMoonshine · 04/06/2014 13:42

Oh yes Nancy, that's the one.
Where he's the only one who can help at road traffic accidents.
