To think Tom Cruise is a really lovely bloke?

Just seen him on Graham Norton and he's so funny and able to laugh at himself. His co-stars always seem to love him and he just comes across as a thoroughly nice guy. I know he gets a lot of bad press but I am not sure it's all deserved.

I think all schlebs should be viewed with some suspicion,as the media image is a construct

kukeslala · 03/06/2014 20:02

Yeah but your not asking if they like themselves or others, your asking about Tom Cruise, people answer and give reasons others are giving you their thoughts you just don't seem to like them.

grocklebox · 03/06/2014 20:02

Hes a scientology puppet, and are all fucking insane. I would imagine the media appearances are just another acting role.

ScrambledSmegs · 03/06/2014 20:02

He seems like he tries very hard to be liked, but I imagine that is rather normal levels of neediness in a Hollywood actor. The Scientology thing is off-putting though, he's very high-ranking there i think?

I will always love his turn in Tropic Thunder. Didn't even realise it was him. So funny.

NickiFury · 03/06/2014 20:02

Yes I suppose so. He just intrigues me for some reason, don't find him particularly attractive but would always go and see one of his movies because I find him and the kind of movie he does very enjoyable to watch.

He's doing a massive PR cleanse at the moment. There was a ludicrously glowing article about him in the LA Times a week or two ago.

I think he is probably not at heart a nasty person. And he is a very hard worker. But who knows what his real personality is after decades of cult brainwashing and mismanagement of his ADHD.

EverythingCounts · 03/06/2014 20:04

I haven't seen him interviewed for years. The Scientology stuff is an issue, no doubt. However, he undoubtedly has charisma as pp have said. I also think he's a much better actor than he's given credit for - he is really excellent in Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, Magnolia, and Collateral, off the top of my head. Of course there are stinkers like Cocktail (although he looked great Wink) but then other actors like Nicholas Cage have made shedloads of terrible films too and people still acknowledge that he is a great actor. Cruise's looks work against him to an extent.

I watched Top Gun when it was on again the other week and while it's no Oscar winner, it's a satisfyingly cheesy watch and a nostalgic one for me too now as it takes me back to teenage years. So I can't hold that against him either.

NickiFury · 03/06/2014 20:06

Shock I didn't know he had ADHD, that's interesting, explains a lot really.

He reminds of Will Smith, in that constant enthusiasm for absolutley everything.

I imagine it's very alluring in small doses, especially when you're the object of his enthusiasm, but after a while, you'd notice that said enthusiasm wasn't discerning in any way, and then it would become rather exhausting.

motherinferior · 03/06/2014 20:10

I'd quite like to be enthused at by Will Smith, I must say. Mr Cruise not so much.

Joolsy · 03/06/2014 20:11

"He has said some cruel and ill informed stuff about depression but I notice it didn't take long for someone to say something stupid about his height hmm"

Where??

LumionaMoonsplash · 03/06/2014 20:12

He came across well on GN but I got the impression the Charlize didn't like him. Its also the second time that he was interviewed without anyone else but his co-star. Weird for GN show as he always has everyone sat together but TC seems to command a single interview.

MistressDeeCee · 03/06/2014 20:13

Not sure what to think about the Scientology stuff. But then again I dont tend to believe in press assassinations much either. He does come across as an OK guy. His public persona is good. You never can tell, tho..but nothing the press have written makes me think bad of him. They crank up everything

DoctorTwo · 03/06/2014 20:14

He really should grow his own facial hair, especially around his chin, so he can reduce his dependence on wearing his lady friends instead.

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/06/2014 20:14

" he just comes across as a thoroughly nice guy"
He's an actor, any competent actor should be able to come across as whatever they choose to appear to be. Or what their publicist/management team have decided what he is to appear to be.

NickiFury · 03/06/2014 20:14

Someone referred to "little man syndrome".

His scientology links are enough for me to give his films a wide berth and to not be interested in what he says at all.

londonrach · 03/06/2014 21:12

Dawson fan here and seeing katie stressed was awful as seeing her grow up in the programme i hated what he did to her. He's a actor so he can act nice and personally I won't cross the street to meet him. Also gone off brad Pitt since Jennifer/ Angelia. (Completely goes off point). His religious beliefs are strange. I believe a lot of Americans view him as semi god following top gun. (Mentioned by various people when we travelled across American for 6 months).

DowntonTrout · 03/06/2014 21:16

I think he's a very good actor.

And I don't mean in films.

MrsAlexVause · 03/06/2014 21:16

I've read psychopaths can be very charming and draw people in. Not that I'm saying he's a psychopath but there's something not right about him.

nachohousekeeper · 03/06/2014 21:19

I find him weirdly calm and creepy. Even his Madame Tussaudes model gave me the creeps!

VampyreofTimeandMemory · 03/06/2014 21:19

don't like him.

kennyp · 03/06/2014 21:20

he did come across as nice, and not desperate to flip people off the red chair either (russell crow was a complete twat flipping people when he was on recently). plus he seemed to quite like people pissing around as they do on graham norton (whereas bear grills had a sense of humour failure)

he seemed genuinely nice, whereas charlize theron seemed a genuine knobhead (imo) and the family guy man (i've no idea who he is?) was a hoot. i've not seen a tom cruise film since rain man and i won't see top gun 2 (in case you're reading this, cruise) as goose was killed off (booo hoooo hissssssssssssssss)

YellowTulips · 03/06/2014 21:23

Of course he comes across as a nice guy - he's an actor.....

But also one that belongs to a cult that has an appalling track record of control over its members both emotional an financial, who "woo" premier celebrities to present a facade of respectability.
